Camino Stage 5: Day 13 – Bayonne to Southwell Once the walking stops, then I am keen to get home. But while I could rearrange two elements of my journey, Eurostar remained stubbornly immoveable, except at an outrageous price.  Anyway, I woke silly early and could not get back to sleep, so I was…

Camino Stage 5: Day 12 – Bayonne The pilgrim hostel Yvette and Miriam, the hospitalières The day starts early in a pilgrim hostel. Everyone (bar one very heavy sleeper) was up and about from 6 am, and one woman left at 6.45 am! The rest had a light breakfast of coffee and bread and jam, and we're…

Camino Stage 5: Day 11 – Beyries to Orthez to Bayonne Today was a day of delights. After heavy rain, mists and fog, it was such a joy to walk in sun and shade. It never got too hot, but it brought all the surrounding landscape to life. A green lane near Sault de Navailles Undulating countryside…

Camino Stage 5: Day 10 – Hagetmau to Beyries My first view of the Pyrenees Today was a gloriously sunny day, dominated by the majestic outline of the Pyrenees on the horizon. France and northern Spain have had one of the wettest Easters in memory, and that will no doubt have added to the snow on…

Camino Stage 5: Day 10 – Saint Sever to Hagetmau I'm in my room at the hostel with Olivier, my Belgian walking companion. I have just asked him how this town's name is pronounced - he hasn't a clue. I suppose that's like asking anyone south of Sheffield how Slaithwaite should be pronounced.…

Camino Stage 5: Day 8 – Mont de Marsan to Saint Sever I woke early, got up, showered, packed, had a small breakfast and out and on the road by 07.45. I think I was both itching to get walking again, but also somewhat apprehensive about how my feet would hold up. Mont de Marsan to Saint Sever is…

Camino Stage 5: Day 7 – Mont de Marsan This was the day I gave over to not going anywhere, and giving my feet time to heal.  It has been a good day, divided between watching the Pope's funeral, having a good afternoon rest, and then going back to the bar where I watched the funeral to see the…

Camino Stage 5: Day 6 – Roquefort to Mont de Marsan I found sleeping in a dormitory of snorers and whistlers a bit challenging, but managed to fall asleep by midnight. Mornings start early on the road, and by eight I was in the car of the hostess of the hostel, who very kindly dropped me off at…

Camino Stage 5: Day 5 – Bourriot-Bergonce to Rocquefort Last night was wrapped in the deep silence of the countryside, with only the sound of rain. I woke to a brighter morning and, after breakfast, was on the road by 8.15am. I had agreed to walk with Annie, whom I had met on the road on Tuesday.…

Camino Stage: Day 4 – Captieux to Bourriot-Bergonce Today was a very strange day's walking. First of all, it was raining when I got up. Fine, wet rain. Not heavy, but always there. Sometimes it was a bit heavier, sometimes it almost petered out, then it came as sheets of wet mist. It was…

First day's walking on this leg of the Camino. Rain! jeremypemberton.uk/2025/04/22/c...

Camino Stage 5: Day 3 – Bazas to Captieux Ready for the road Today the walk restarted. First of all, I had a quick breakfast, then departed from last night's lodging. The room was fine, but the couple running it were disturbingly unfriendly. I checked with a Frenchwoman I met on the road who had…

Camino Stage 5: London to Bazas Victoria Park Road at 05.45 Today was a long travelling day, starting before six, and ending about seven this evening. It was also one of the busiest travelling days I can remember. Eurostar was completely full at eight o'clock. Taking the Metro to Paris…

Camino Stage 5: Southwell to London Every adventurous journey starts with steps away from the known and familiar until you find that you have reached a point where the landscapes, both external and internal, have shifted, and the territory is new. Today was such a slow, familiar beginning - a…

Sir Edwyn Hoskyns ready for Easter. May the joy of the Resurrection be yours - as it is his! Alleluia! Christ is Risen! @SouthwMinster

Back on my ‘little road’. Boots ready for the road - with new laces. "The winter is past, the flowers appear on the earth, the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtle dove is heard in our land."Song of Solomon 2:11-12 I left the Camino last September feeling distinctly crestfallen. I…

York looking glorious today

To celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month, and my own tiny contribution thereto, I offer the very kind and extremely accurate Wiki article someone wrote. LGBTQ+ liberation still has a long way to go, and every struggle helps! #lgbthostorymonth en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremy_...

In a Guardian article about new words. Rawdogging (you can guess the etymology) "became a viral TikTok trend in 2024, encouraging people to abstain from entertainment on long-haul flights...in pursuit of mental growth and a zen state of mind. Oh, the irony!!

Why do I feel like I need a shower after spending any time listening to hate, disinformation and bile on X?

On children and church. I raised five, while working as a vicar. Parents and babies/small children need lots of support, and zero criticism. Group activities for smaller members of the congregation in an ancillary room can help for part of the service (if you have volunteers) . However...

The Cake! I always feel ready when this is done, and there is a tin full of fresh mince pies.

William Morris's 'Hare among the Flowers', worked in petit point, and turned into a cushion. I'm rather pleased with how it has turned out. #adventuresinneedlework

Only the second time in my life I have been on horseback. With the exercising racehorsesat Pebbles Bay, Bridgetown, early this morning.

It has been a great privilege and joy to worship with God's people at St James's, Holeton, Barbados - theirs is the oldest church building on the island.
