Some Saturday scenes… Vancouver & North Vancouver

My next read will be this elegiac book by #Australian writer Geraldine Brooks; Memorial Days addresses the untimely death of her husband, American historian Tony Horwitz, and the grief that followed. I have previously read one of Brooks’ novels but I am not (yet) read Horwitz’ work. #memoir

I don’t post a lot about politics here on BlueSky, but one of the saddest things about the current US president is the scorn for education and knowledge. The mass firings of competent skilled workers, plans to demolish the Dept of Education, and disregard for objective truth are abominable.

BlueSky doesn’t seem to have a native polling functions, so I welcome responses from friends and followers in the comments. Would you like me to continue to post about books that I am currently reading?

My mum sent me this book as a birthday present and I will begin reading it this evening. Harrison is the first of several UK writers I hope to read this year; the forward is by @danielmendelsohn.bsky.social (I’ve previously read two of his books). @mcnallyeditions.com publishes beautiful reissues.

Secretary of Defense Hegseth says he doesn’t know if Russia invaded Ukraine. This you?

It seems I no longer hear of some of the major 🇨🇦 & 🇺🇸 writers of the late 20th century. John Updike, Carol Shields, Norman Mailer, Gore Vidal, Timothy Findlay, E Lynn Harris, and Reynolds Price have all slipped out of the zeitgeist?

I’m currently reading this 🏳️‍🌈-themed debut novel from 🇮🇱 author Eli Zuzovsky . However, the novel is not a #translation from Hebrew: it was written in English, which is likely the author’s second language. Like the prose of Nabokov, another non-native speaker of English, it flows beautifully.

Spotted today in the #Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood of Vancouver: public art proclaiming the maxim “Love is Love”.

Yesterday I joined some friends at Commodore Lanes for 5-pin #bowling in downtown #Vancouver. Commodore Lanes is Canada’s oldest surviving bowling alley: it opened in 1930.

The Trump administration’s attacks on the LGBT community (esp the trans community) in the US are abhorrent. Their actions risk an increase in hate crimes and will marginalize 🏳️‍🌈 ppl while endangering US security by purging the military. All ppl of good conscience must oppose the actions of DJT.

This stairway reminds me of the designs of the late I.M. Pei. Alas, it is actually the stairway from the first to the second story of the Apple Store in downtown Vancouver, a relatively recent building. #architecture

The Delta Airlines offer of US$30,000 in compensation to the 76 survivors of the #YYZ crash landing is insultingly low. CEO Ed Bastian received $34,214,328 in compensation in 2023, which is almost $94k per calendar year *day* (or $136k per working day). The survivors may face lifelong anxiety etc.

Tove Jansson wrote much more than Mooomintroll monographs! I’m diving into Sun City, a mid 1970s novel translated from the Swedish by Thomas Teal and newly reissued by @nyrb-imprints.bsky.social . I wonder if @mookse.bsky.social and @bibliopaul.bsky.social will read it too?

“Ukraine is a warmongering dictatorship that attacked Russia” and “Hamas is a legitimate force fighting settler colonialism” are two pieces of Putin’s propaganda (aimed at different parts of the political spectrum). Pls don’t fall for either statement…

Israeli media reports that Shiri Bibas and her children, Kfir and Ariel, and Oded Lifshitz, will be the bodies released from Hamas captivity tomorrow. The Bibas family asked not to eulogize them until they are certain. I have no words 💔

For me, the pinnacle of painting coincides with an era roughly between the 1880s and the early 1950s. Lawren Harris produced many amazing works, including this painting of Mount Odaray in the BC Rocky Mountains (1920s).

Happy Flag Day to all fellow Canadians! Today is the 60th anniversary of the Maple Leaf flag; before that we used the Union Jack. Here’s a picture of our late Premier John Horgan with the British Columbia flag and MLA Ravi Parma with the Canadian flag.

My partner and I are taking a (non-Tesla) autonomous electric vehicle ride to downtown Vancouver!

My weekend read is this book by Emmanuel Carrére in a #translation by John Lambert. The cover design reminds me of the design of the @petshopboys.co.uk album Very; this may be an intentional reference as the book is about the trial of the terrorists who attacked a music venue (the Bataclan)?

I’m currently reading this book by Aharon Appelfeld, translated from the #Hebrew by Stuart Schoffman. It’s a quiet but engrossing novel set in rural Poland and it (literally) haunting: last night I had a dream that encompassed a theme from this novel. #literaryfiction

This morning we woke up to more snow here and a slowly lengthening day as the season progresses. I recently posted about Leonard Cohen and tonight I’m thinking of him again. There’s a crack, a crack in everything That’s how the light gets in. —-“Anthem”, 1992 🇨🇦

Today I am thinking about a 🇨🇦 icon from Montreal, Leonard Cohen; I wish he was still with us. From the fires of the homeless From the ashes of the gay Democracy is coming to the USA —except from “Democracy”, 1992

The first significant snow of the season (at lower elevations) has finally arrived!
