Trump didn't sign the rumored executive order to "abolish" the Education Department yesterday as many thought he would. But a leaked draft gives higher ed leaders some idea of what could happen next. www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

UPDATE: The Trump administration is now saying the order will not be signed today.

The long-awaited directive to "abolish" the Dept. of Ed is scheduled to be signed at 2 p.m. today. The agency may lay off hundreds of staff. But it's important to note that until Congress passes legislation saying otherwise, the agency will still exist. www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

On Feb. 18, Trump ordered all agencies to publicize DOGE cuts “to the maximum extent" and @insidehighered.com immediately requested a comprehensive list of such cuts from the Ed Dept. Now, it's been 2 weeks and ED has yet to respond. Here's what we know: www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

@liamknox.bsky.social provides valuable insight on the recent thoughts of Edward Blum, the architect of the affirmative action ban, as Trump's anti-DEI crusade roars. www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

@jessicablake.bsky.social and I watched Linda McMahon’s confirmation hearing so you didn’t have to. Here’s our recap: www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

I’m headed to Capitol Hill now for ed secretary Linda McMahon’s confirmation hearing with the Senate HELP committee. Follow along for live coverage with @knottkatherine.bsky.social and yours truly: www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

Trump's latest attempt to cut back on NIH funding sets off alarms in higher ed. If it goes unchallenged, colleges will have to cut budgets, raise tuition or reduce research to make up the difference. @kathrynpalmer.bsky.social @knottkatherine.bsky.social www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

Trump's nominee for secretary of education will appear before the Senate next Thursday. Here's what we know about Linda McMahon and what we know about who's leading the department until she is confirmed: bit.ly/McMahonHearing

If you ever doubted that Trump would do what he said he’d do, think again. The President reaffirmed his goal to dismantle the department of ed on Tuesday afternoon, saying, “Linda, I hope you do a great job and put yourself out of a job.” www.insidehighered.com/news/quick-t...

We are 10 days in to the second Trump administration. But what has that meant for colleges and universities? Here’s a recap: www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

Important work from @saraweissman.bsky.social showing how red states are following Trump's executive orders against DEI. Indiana's only HBCU and an academic support service for low-income and minority students were both cut from this year's state budget. www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

LATEST: Here's a rundown on what Trump's pause of federal grants will mean for America's colleges and universities. Par for the course eight days into Trump's second term, experts say there's a lot of uncertainty and concern levels are high. www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

ICYMI: Earlier this week Trump signed an EO aiming to eliminate DEI programs in higher ed by threatening to cut federal funds for colleges that don't comply. Now, universities are preemptively responding. www.insidehighered.com/news/quick-t...

Trump signed an order about DEI, but what can it do? Higher ed experts say it’s hard to know how far the order will actually go. But anti–DEI activists see it as a clear mandate that colleges teach students how to think not what to think or lose federal funds. www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

As we enter Trump era 2.0 academics have expressed a catalog of concerns about the vulnerability of DEI, student loan forgiveness and academic freedom. But policy experts say that certain executive actions could benefit colleges as employers. www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

An interesting read on from my @insidehighered.com colleague, Johanna Alonso, about a growing shift in higher ed curriculum that combines computer science and other STEM degrees with liberal arts. www.insidehighered.com/news/student...

Seems like a good time to share this views essay published yesterday by Erin O’Callaghan and Anne Kirkner: www.insidehighered.com/opinion/view...

BREAKING @insidehighered.com: A federal court judge has vacated the Biden Administration’s Title IX rewrite on a national basis. Colleges and universities can no longer be required to allow individuals assigned male at birth to compete in women’s sports, or to prohibit separating bathrooms by sex.

There were no shortage of higher ed news stories this year. From Claudine Gay’s resignation to Joe Gow’s academic freedom, from protests and Project 2025 to FAFSA and finances, it was a defining year. Here’s a look back at the major events of 2024 www.insidehighered.com/news/institu...

A campus free speech roundtable, hosted by @GregMurphyMD (R-NC), focused on how DEI creates a chilling effect on conservative constituents. The event reinforced the GOP argument that colleges are liberal bastions, unwelcoming to intellectual diversity. www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

we at @insidehighered.com called and were serenaded by a lovely volunteer Arthur, 10/10 would definitely recommend

Due to a recent influx of new people to the platform - I want to remind peeps that I have a starter pack for #reporters and contributors who focus on #HigherEd. Please share and lmk if you should be added. go.bsky.app/ALsqXWk @insidehighered.com @usatoday.com @politico.com @marketwatch.com

LATEST: I’m at a campus free speech round table on the Hill where Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) just said she and her team are four votes short of getting the College Cost Reduction Act passed and are still working to put it on the floor next week.

UVA suspended a student-led tour service in Aug., saying it had nothing to do with complaints about how the club portrayed UVA's history. Now, the suspension has been extended and the org has decided to go out on its own, reinforcing suggested motives. www.insidehighered.com/news/student...

It's a two story day! First up, Michigan's regents are considering changes to DEI. “The morning of Nov. 6, the political landscape changed dramatically,” the university's VP of government affairs said. “Higher education is in the spotlight more than ever.” www.insidehighered.com/news/diversi...

Red states that want to eliminate ED (which is still very unlikely) are hoping for federal money to flow through their budgets. It may happen for K-12, but not higher ed. My other thoughts, for @insidehighered.com. www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

#ICYMI: Reactions to Linda McMahon being tapped in as Trump's education secretary centered on her background as a wrestling executive and what her lack of education policy experience could mean for the future of the @usedgov.bsky.social. www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

New -> Sen. Mike Rounds, a Republican from South Dakota, has introduced the Returning Education to Our States Act, which would abolish the U.S. Education Department and divide its offices up among other federal agencies. You can read the bill text here: www.rounds.senate.gov/imo/media/do...

Reactions to McMahon as ed secretary are mixed. “Absurdity ... sounds like, ‘Let’s put the lady that led mostly faux entertainment wrestling in charge.’” vs. “When people say, ‘Well she’s not a teacher,’ I say, ‘The department is not a school.” www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...

New -> The Senate has unanimously passed the FAFSA Deadline Act after the bill already sailed through the House. The legislation, which will require the Education Department to release the FAFSA to students by Oct. 1 every year, now heads to the president’s desk.

Former WWE CEO Linda McMahon is likely to lead the Education Department. McMahon has few ties to education, but @insidehighered.com did the background research on the few that do exist so you don't have to. www.insidehighered.com/news/governm...
