Heads up @letutahread.bsky.social, @everylibrary.bsky.social, @authorsabb.bsky.social, and @heykellyjensen.bsky.social—new ridiculous book challenge in Davis School District in Utah.

New RFK Jr.-inspired book challenge in DSD this week: SPEAK UP! by Rebecca Burgess. It's a middle grade graphic novel about an autistic girl that finds her voice with the help of her nonbinary friend. 1/

So while this was happening yesterday in the House, the Senate filed an *even worse* bill in Iowa that mirrors the "sue over books you don't like" bill in Idaho. This is all being done quickly so as to create worse bills while you're distracted. Iowa, make calls ASAP. legiscan.com/IA/bill/SF34...

Utah Republicans want to prevent Trans youth from living in the dorm of their choice and not enough people are talking about it. Urge Governor Cox to veto this bill. utahnewsdispatch.com/2025/02/10/b...

New Blog Post: Book Banning Harms Children — Here’s Why: letutahread.org/blog/banshar...

Four new #bannedbooks from Davis School District in Utah today. Here are the details (paging @letutahread.bsky.social, @everylibrary.bsky.social, and @authorsabb.bsky.social so you're in the loop):

Another book has been added to Utah’s growing list of titles banned from all public schools in the state. The list now covers 16 titles — 14 of them written by women.

Right now, Utah lawmakers are discussing HB 209, a bill that would allow convicted child abusers to homeschool. If passed, HB 0209 would leave countless children to abuse and neglect in their homes. #utleg We need your help to stop HB 209: responsiblehomeschooling.org/utah-hb-0209/

ACTION NEEDED TODAY - THE CLOCK IS TICKING TO OVERTURN TWO NEW STATEWIDE BOOK BANS AND RETURN DECISION-MAKING TO LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS Click now to send an email today: letutahread.org/localcontrol @wgawest.bsky.social @authorsguild.bsky.social @authorsabb.bsky.social @ncacensorship.bsky.social

“But the good news is that, in Texas at least, we’re used to operating in a bad situation. We’re tough. And we know our task, which isn’t just fighting these battles but also recording and publicizing their effects.” franklinstrong.substack.com/p/the-depart...

Some not so great banned book news: DSD's school board voted to remove these six books last night. (You'll recall they postponed their vote because some board members felt like they didn't have enough info to make a decision w/o knowing the appeal committee's rationale for removing these books). 1/

Okay, I cannot recommend 5calls.org enough. Enter your address and it will find all your reps (federal and state). AND give you a list of issues to call about AND which reps to call about each of them AND a little script for each, in case it's helpful. They have an app, too.

If we're going to be in purgatory for a time, at least there are puppies.

Current mood

@letutahread.bsky.social, the UT statewide coalition of organizations and grassroots library supporters invite you to take action against this unconstitutional attack on firtt amendment freedoms: letutahread.org/usbeban

It’s super fun when you call your bank with a question their AI chat bot won’t answer and then the customer service rep won’t help you either because you can’t answer their *AI-generated* security questions. How am I supposed to know what your plagiarism machine decided to name my first pet?!?

Alright all - I'm stepping away for this evening. I'll be back in later tonight to see if there's any more updates. Stay safe, if you're trans, stay with us, we are not giving up. And most of all... these EOs are not law, they are not passed by congress, do NOT comply.

Honestly, a lot of the dems response to *waves hands at everything* feels a lot like this:

Today, "Like a Love Story" by Abdi Nazemian was added to the list of books banned in all Utah public schools. This book was reported by the Davis, Jordan and Washington Co. school districts.

First quilt top of the year! I love sunflowers—they remind me of my grandma. This one is also special because I used as many yellows and browns as I could from the fabric I inherited from her. (Ignore the terrible lighting—the puppy was asleep and I had to snap a picture before he woke up 😅)

With feds giving the thumbs up to discriminatory book banning it’s that much more important to show up and speak up statewide and at local school and public library board meetings. @everylibrary.bsky.social provides free help organizing and acting locally. Utahns can connect at: letutahread.org

I finally(!) finished my WIP 🥳🥳🥳 I started this draft thinking I was only going to make a few revisions… it ended up being a complete rewrite that took over a year 😅😭 It still needs some clean up, but I’m going to spend the rest of the day basking in the fact that I did a thing 😊

We reached out to @elanakarnold.bsky.social for her comment on the banning of her novel Damsel (a Printz Award Honor Book) . 14 other books including her novel "What Girls Are Made Of"(a Nat. Book Award Finalist) are already banned. See Elana's video response: www.instagram.com/p/DFNkG9kP2a...
