The "B" stands for "Blackagar Boltagon"

I...kinda thought sending weekly round-ups of what you did to your boss was s.o.p.

New bonus episode of my podcast is now uploaded! This one is the fourth of four episodes on the great newspaper comic strips of the 1900-1937 period. In this episode I rave about Caniff's "Terry and the Pirates," Hogarth's "Tarzan," and Foster's "Prince Valiant." www.patreon.com/posts/bonus-...

Thing is, I couldn't have picked Luis Buñuel out of a lineup before now. But I look at this picture and I'm nodding my head and saying, "Yeah, that's Buñuel."

One of the rough parts of being a parent of is having to stay back and let your child suffer the consequences of their actions. :-(

Only if @joannestarer.bsky.social writes it.

Petty. So petty. But no, my authorial bête noire, I will pass on ordering your new book for my library, I will pass on mentioning its title online, I will pass on acknowledging its existence altogether.

This weekend, may you be filled with as much delight as Lucille Bluth is at the appearance of Gene Parmesan. www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZMN...

BRB teaching this to my girls

Was just given a genuinely challenging reference question--find the full text of an unpublished letter that cause a great furor and to-do in 1932. Took me almost a half hour to find it, and I had fun doing so. Whee!

This book looks like it will be worth buying or at least checking out from your local public library. www.powells.com/book/on-comi...

Kenya, 1986: "All cartoons on the Kenyan television are foreign, mostly from the United States and Britain. These include "The Flintstone Frolics", "Thundarr the Barbarian", "Space Ghost and Dino Boy", and "The Pink Panther"" Between those four you know all you need to know about the USA.

Sorry, Win Mortimer. The cover artist to LEPAKKO, the Finnish Batman comic published in 1950, leaves you in the dust.

Haven't seen anyone mention this....

Trying to do reference desk duties while virtually attending a committee meeting and failing at both, dagnabbit. Unfortunately, the committee's brief is to standardize instructional sessions, which I'm very interested in opposing, so I'm missing out on important stuff.

And, real talk? Silicon Valley bros are bad enough as it is. Crossbreed them with Massholes? No, no. Massachusetts--and the nation--dodged a huge bullet.

That Doctorow piece at Whatever about his new book had some harsh words for Massachusetts for not being California and missing out on growing Silicon Valley in Mass. rather than CA. Mass. missed out on all the wonderful things Silicon Valley has done, the personalities it's produced? Oh. Darn.

Oh! I totally forgot to post this! Apparently Azealia Banks is telling people that Elon Musk had a "botched penile implant."

Got asked about using AI for research during a class. I'm afraid my response was ever so slightly...intemperate.

The first Black Panther--from the Zimbabwean illustrated monthly magazine PARADE in May, 1954. Black-owned, Black-created, for a Black urban working class audience.

Apparently, in Bulawayo (Zimbabwe) in the 1930s, the most popular comic strip in the largest daily, the RHODESIA HERALD, was Chic Young's "Blondie" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blondie... ), which I'm not quite sure presented the Zimbabweans with an accurate picture of American life....

Apparently the most popular British comic strip in East Africa over the past 50-60 years is Andy Capp. That's a hell of a thing to leave behind in former colonies, England. Have you no shame?

Good to see Dredd interacting positively with the community.

All this is because I made jokes about Lake Lanier, isn't it? Said I was going to go skinny dipping in it, and what could happen? That's why Trump got elected. Well, I'm sorry, Lake Lanier, I shouldn't have mocked you. Now, can you uncurse the country, please?

*glares balefully at the computer* ... ... ... my dude. I truly appreciate you translating your own work into English, especially as you're the world expert on the subject. but. fam. cuz. king. YOUR TRANSLATION IS RIDDLED WITH TYPOS. FOR GODS SAKE NEXT TIME PAY A PRO TO TRANSLATE YOUR BOOK.

I'd certainly *like* to pose a dire threat to the Republicans' way of life, but I just don't think I'm up to it right now.

"Still, Tintin au Congo enjoyed a genuine popularity among African artists, many of whom borrowed the graphic style that Joost Swarte named 'ligne Claire.'" What a loss that nobody ever saved the ligne claire efforts of the African artists!

There's an alternate history, somewhere, about how the Congolese threw out the Belgians and eventually used the ample amount of radium found in their mines to make their own a-bomb.
