Some great plane geology on my flight from SFO to Houston today. Off to College Station to learn all about the core archives! ✈️🪨

"In an era where political forces seek to distort, suppress, or co-opt scientific knowledge for ideological purposes, the scientific community must recognise that staying silent in the face of these challenges is no longer an option." My latest substack kityates.substack.com/p/uk-and-oth...

Good entertainment for my flight this morning - love the discussion around ‘exciting science jobs’ actually turning out to be ‘email, misery and office politics’…….🤣

The University has launched a first-of-its-kind Massive Open Online Course to support millions of people living with Parkinson’s globally. The course includes information on symptoms, risk factors and strategies for living with Parkinson’s, and is open to everyone. Get involved: utas.au/MOOC_

Saw this on LinkedIn and I don't think LINZ are on BSky yet so sharing here as well. Calling Kiwi kids who love creating maps 🎨🗺 LINZ sponsor the NZ Children’s Map Competition 2025, ‘Maps in everyday life’ run by the New Zealand Cartographic Society. More info: lnkd.in/gX8Accg5

New paper on the Hikurangi Margin just published by my PHD student Anthony Shortock. Using a combination of seafloor maos, seismic smf sediment core data to look at the evolution of the Hikurangi Trough. With fantastic figures. 🌊🚢🪨🧪 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

🌊this will be devastating for marine science - international collaboration is critical to monitor the Ocean - one ocean that connects all around the world. 🌎

A team of international researchers is celebrating the discovery of vibrant, complex seafloor communities near the Ross ice shelf and Ross Island. The Ross Sea is the southern-most sea in the world and home to the planet’s third-largest Marine Protected Area. Read more: utas.au/RossSea

Escaped the real world to explore some trails in the sunshine! Now back to work and the start of what looks to be a very busy few months 😳

Great to see this online - investigating offshore carbon transport in the 2016 Kaikōura event bed! Thanks to an awesome group of authors (including @profbobhilton.bsky.social), led by Katie Maier 😊 New area for me so I learned a lot in the last 6 months 🌊🧪https://doi.org/10.1016/j.epsl.2025.119241

“These proposed reforms are akin to trying to make more lemonade by squeezing used lemons slightly harder, rather than investing in more lemons". Great reporting from @veronikameduna.bsky.social on the latest shake-up to NZ's science system. www.science.org/content/arti...

Not entirely surprising (for NIWA and GNS at least) - but it is going to be interesting to see how they actually manage all of this.............. www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/science-s...

We are pleased to announce that the IODP3 Gateway is now open for Expedition Science Team and Panel & Board membership applications! iodp3.org/iodp3-gatewa...

🚨 Abstract submission is now open for #INCISE2025! You have time until the 31st March All details at incise25.icm.csic.es

Even if there’s no acute crisis of trust in science, we shouldn’t minimise the disproportionate impact vocal minorities who distrust science may have on policy and society.

Live steam of the @marumunibremen.bsky.social ROV dive from the FS Sonne offshore SE NZ - hopefully some more deep sea corals- on YouTube today starting in about an hour or so - www.youtube.com/live/5Kwh2JM...

Wonderful sunny day for a run up Kaukau with a very happy dog! 🐾 Arms got as much of a workout as my legs, he’s too fast uphill! #runsky

Very easy to get distracted by fun projects like 3D printing bathymetry scenes for an @anzic.bsky.social funded outreach project, but should really be untangling data and writing papers............

Professor John Fraser of Queensland Uni just made a nice point on LinkedIn which I will be borrowing: ‘A better H -Index would be an index of how the research HELPED’

First run commute for the new year, still finding new trails to explore on the way - like this little one that includes a tiny plank to cross the (currently dry) stream! Lovely day for it, sunny and calm, good escapism from a chaotic world ☀️ #runsky

Why & how scientists should do public outreach, especially now. Smart tips from @nicolecrust.bsky.social on @thetransmitter.bsky.social 🧪 www.thetransmitter.org/craft-and-ca...

I can’t remember who said it to me, but the problem with winning a research grant…can be winning a research grant…

Did you know that there's an undersea volcano off of the Oregon/Washington coast? And did you know that's acting up? Let's unpack what this means, and what we know. 🧵

Today’s run featured a >193,000 yr old maar (Lake Pupuke), one of the oldest volcanic features in Tāmaki Makaurau, and a lovely view of Rangitoto, the youngest (and largest) volcano in the Auckland volcanic field (~1500 yrs). Plus some angry swans for added excitement!

Managed to sneak in a run to the beach this morning before the rain arrived. Lovely outcrops of Miocene(?) sediments along the shore, and stunning views of Rangitoto volcano offshore. Pretty good start to the day! ☀️🏃‍♀️

I'll never understand how bottom trawling is legal. 🌊 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

This also includes disbanding the humanities and social sciences Marsden panels to focus on "core science"

Slightly belated post for Antarctica Day - but here is a little video from the Ross Sea earlier this year, spot the penguins (Adelie and a few Emperors) hanging out on the ice as we cruised past🐧🧊🚢

Had a great week at the GSNZ conference - lots of interesting talks, catching up with people and a chance to explore old haunts from PhD days. Plus some great views from the plane! 🗻✈️

"We're seeing areas of Antarctica starting to green, turning green with plant life as the ice retreats, and we're seeing 150 billion tonnes a year of ice go into the ocean, to drive up sea levels." - Prof Matt King, ACEAS Director Full interview ⬇️ #AARC2024 www.abc.net.au/listen/progr...

"Engaging in mCDR research requires a tremendous amount of hope. The techniques matter only if all our other efforts to mitigate climate change—from renewable energy to more walkable cities—reduce carbon emissions to a small fraction of what they are today." — @jaimepalter.bsky.social 🌊

Attending the Blue Talks event today in Ōtautahi, some very interesting points raised in the opening remarks so far: "The current ways of thinking are failing us" "We need to centre the voices of local communities, indigenous nations, and youth" "What happens on the land, happens to the ocean" 🌊

What a great day it was in Te Whanganui a Tara Wellington yesterday. A unequivocal message was sent to David Seymour and the coalition government. My Stuff #cartoon today #nzpol #ToitūTeTiriti

Looking forward to seeing FS Sonne in Aotearoa next year - one of the best research ships I have sailed on (offshore Japan 🗾 in 2016) - lots of exciting science to be done! 🌊🚢

Reupping for the evening crowd because I've got cool rocks to show 😅

Reposting this starter pack of Aotearoa Geoscientists in case folks missed it. I've updated it with a few more people since I originally posted it. If you think yourself or anyone you know should be on this pack, please let me know!

This is amazing! Video just posted by NZ Labour account in collaboration with the Green Party and Māori Party! 👊

Offshore wind developers said seabed mining is incompatible with offshore wind. Luxon puts seabed mining into fast track list. Offshore wind firm abandons plans for NZ. So NZ forfeits cheap renewable energy for seabed mining (that will face enormous opposition) newsroom.co.nz/2024/10/24/o...
