Thanks to all those who participated and supported the Black Philadelphia conference that I organized a few weeks ago. Here is a good article about it. I finally made it in the Penn alumni magazine! omnia.sas.upenn.edu/story/center...

Historians, if you have undergraduates studying Black History in the c18 & c19, please encourage them to apply for a summer fellowship at the Library Company of Philadelphia. I am extending the deadline. librarycompany.org/mellon-schol...

Kerri Greenidge’s review of Martha Jones’ new book, The Trouble of Color, reads like a state of the field. A smart review of an absorbing new book. www.nytimes.com/2025/03/04/b...

The erasure of trans people from the NPS Stonewall webpage is a form of violence. Its like saying Northern men didn't fight in the Civil War. Stonewall wouldn't have happened w/o trans people. www.nps.gov/ston/index.htm

Remember: Black History Month still exists, even if they try to tell you it does not ... great book by @jimdowns.bsky.social ... regarp.com/2022/05/31/r...

If you're interested in what historians have to say about January 6, a handy book: "January 6 & the Politics of History" -- a conversation w/Elizabeth Hinton, Jill Lepore, Stephanie McCurry, William Sturkey, Julian Zelizer, Jim Downs, and me, w/some associated articles ugapress.org/book/9780820...

Any effort to highlight Barbara & Karen Fields' brilliant book, RaceCraft, is critical, but McWhorter misses BJF's salient point about power. It is not about how people passed as white. Its not about their identity, but, as BJF has argued, how they are identified. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/23/o...

@jimdowns.bsky.social sky.social quoted in @nytimes.com mes.com article on pardons, patriots, the patriarchy, and "the politics of history." Still immensely proud of this book and this series. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/20/u... shorturl.at/PLDvq

When I got an email from a NYT reporter to comment on Trump pardoning the Jan 6 insurrectionists, I considered not responding for fear of retribution. Then I realized, if we remain silent, when the press is still trying to do their job, we will lose our voice www.nytimes.com/2025/01/20/u...

Curtis Yarvin misrepresents my argument in SICK FROM FREEDOM about freedpeople’s morbidity & mortality rates during and after the Civil War. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/18/m...

CIVIL WAR HISTORY IS SEEKING A BOOK REVIEW EDITOR. Please email me w/ your CV if you would like to be considered. The Book Review Editor is responsible for selecting books to be reviewed, assigning reviewers, & editing reviews. Knowledge of the academic field is necessary.

Countless gay people lost their jobs & custody rights b/c of her vitriolic campaign against gay liberation in the 1970s, which I document in my book, “Stand By Me: The Forgotten History of Gay Liberation.” www.nytimes.com/2025/01/09/a...

The American Medical Association featured me on their Ethics Podcast this month. If you haven’t read my book, but are interested in it, it’s a good synopsis of the major arguments. It’s also worth .5 CME credit, edhub.ama-assn.org/ama-journal-...

Last Monday was the DuBois Forum, hosted by the brilliant visionaries Kendra Taira Field & Kerri Greenidge. It was, as always, an invigorating & inspiring event that began at the Boston Athenaeum, followed by reception, followed by dinner, then drinks at a pub followed by Chinese food at 1:30am.

That’s a wrap. My last major obligation at the end of the semester is complete.

Thankful to spend time with the legendary physician & histoian extraordinaire Vanessa Northington Gamble on Thanksgiving weekend.

#Histmed, are you out there?! AAHM is now on Bluesky 💙 We will no longer use our Twitter account, so follow along here for announcements, updates on our centennial meeting, and an ✨occasional✨ plea for donations.
