Downy Woodpecker Dryobates pubescens #photography #birds 🪶 Downy Woodpeckers are fascinating little birds! They're the smallest woodpeckers in North America and are known for their distinctive black-and-white plumage. Males have a red patch on the back of their heads, while females do not.

Blue-gray Gnatcatcher- female Polioptila caerulea #photography #birds 🪶 Occasionally, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers "overshoot" on their spring migrations and end up much further north than usual. Usually strong winds is the main cause. Most probably make their way back south before nesting.

Soon my Bluebirds will return. Mom bringing the kids to lunch. Menu=meal worms

Red-eyed Vireo Vireo olivaceus #photography #birds #wildlifephotography 🪶 The red iris that gives the Red-eyed Vireo its name doesn't develop until the end of the birds' first winter. Then the brown iris the birds were born with becomes dull brick red to bright crimson in different individuals.

Indigo Bunting Passerina cyanea #photography #birds 🪶 The optical magic of the Indigo Bunting's feathers is indeed captivating. Their feathers act like tiny prisms, bending and scattering light in a way that gives them that beautiful, iridescent hue.

Eastern Bluebird Sialia sialis Bluebirds are often seen as harbingers of happiness and joy. Their presence is said to uplift spirits and bring a sense of cheerfulness. Due to their vibrant blue color and their song, bluebirds are symbols of hope, representing a bright future and positive outlook.

Northern Cardinal - Female Cardinalis cardinalis #photography #birds Only a few female North American songbirds sing, but the female Northern Cardinal does. This may give the male information about when to bring food to the nest. A mated pair shares song phrases.

Northern House Wren Troglodytes aedon #photography #birds House Wrens have been observed stuffing nest boxes with twigs and sometimes destroying the eggs of other bird species to take over the nesting site. This behavior is driven by their need to secure prime nesting spots and reduce competition.

Swamp Sparrow Melospiza georgiana #photography #birds #wildlifephotography Swamp Sparrows have longer legs than other members of its genus; allowing them to wade into shallow water to forage. This species even sometimes sticks its head under water to try to capture aquatic invertebrates.

Eastern Phoebe Sayornis phoebe #photography #birds #wildlifephotography They have a distinctive habit of wagging their tails while perched and are known for their soft, "fee-bee" song, which they use to attract mates and mark their territories.

Common Grackle Quiscalus quiscula #photography #birds Common Grackles are resourceful foragers. They follow plows to catch invertebrates and mice, wade into water to catch small fish, pick leeches off the legs of turtles, steal worms from American Robins, raid nests, and kill and eat adult birds.

Wood Duck (Female) Aix sponsa #photography #birds #wildlifephotography The female wood duck may not boast the vibrant colors of her male counterpart, but she is still quite striking in her own right.

Baltimore Oriole -Female Icterus galbula #photography #birds #wildlifephotography Female birds are duller in coloration because they lay, incubate, and hatch eggs. Bright colors would attract attention and endanger the nest. Their plumage is crucial for survival.

White-breasted Nuthatch Sitta carolinensis #photography #birds #wildlifephotography If you see one making lots of trips to and from your feeder – too many for it to be eating them all – it may be storing the seeds for later in the winter, by wedging them into furrows in the bark of nearby trees.

Now that there are so many (millions) on this site I am resharing some of my favorite earlier posts when there were just a few. I Hope you enjoy.

Blue-headed Vireo Vireo solitarius #photography #birds #wildlifephotography 🪶 The Blue-headed Vireo is the easternmost form in the "Solitary Vireo" complex. Formerly considered one species, three species now are recognized. In appearance it is the most brightly colored of the three.

Yellow Warbler Setophaga petechia #photography #birds #wildlifephotography 🪶 Lunch: The black dot is lunch

Tricolored Heron Egretta tricolor #photography #birds #wildlifephotography They tend to feed alone or at the edge of groups of other waders. The oldest recorded Tricolored Heron was at least 17 years, 8 months old when it was shot in the Bahamas in 1976. It had been banded in Virginia in 1958.

Black Skimmer Rynchops niger #photography #birds #wildlifephotography 🪶 Skimmers feed by opening the bill and dropping the long, narrow lower mandible into the water, skimming along until they feel a fish.

Dark-eyed Junco- slate-colored Junco hyemalis #photography #birds #wildlifephotography Juncos are the "snowbirds" of the middle latitudes. Over most of the eastern United States, they appear as winter sets in, and then retreat northward each spring.

Song Sparrow Melospiza melodia #photography #birds #wildlifephotography Song Sparrows are the musical maestros. It’s fascinating how female Song Sparrows can discern the quality of a male's song based on his learning ability. It’s almost like they’re searching for the avian equivalent of Mozart!

White-throated Sparrow Zonotrichia albicollis #photography #birds There are two forms, white-crowned and tan-crowned. individuals almost always mate with a bird of the opposite morph. Males of both color types prefer females with white stripes, but both kinds of females prefer tan-striped males.

White-crowned sparrow Zonotrichia leucophrys #photography #birds #wildlifephotography A rare one for me. A migrating White-crowned Sparrow was once tracked moving 300 miles in a single night. Alaskan White-crowned Sparrows migrate about 2,600 miles to winter in Southern California.

Belted Kingfisher Megaceryle alcyon #photography #birds #wildlifephotography 🪶 Fossils of Belted Kingfishers (to 600,000 years old) have been unearthed in Florida, Virginia, Tennessee, and Texas. The oldest fossil in the kingfisher genus is 2 million years old, found in Alachua County, Florida

Prairie Warbler Setophaga discolor #photography #birds #wildlifephotography 🪶 Like most warblers, Prairie Warbler sings two similar, but distinct, song types. The faster “A Song” is directed at the female for courtship and the “B Song” is sung at territorial boundaries to deter other males.

American Goldfinch Spinus tristis #photography #birds #wildlifephotography American Goldfinches molt their body feathers twice a year, once in late winter and again in late summer. The brightening yellow of male goldfinches each spring is one welcome mark of approaching warm months.

Red-headed Woodpecker Melanerpes erythrocephalus #photography #birds #wildlifephotography The striking Red-headed Woodpecker has earned a place in human culture. Cherokee Indians used the species as a war symbol, and it makes an appearance in Longfellow’s epic poem The Song of Hiawatha

White Ibis Eudocimus albus #photography #birds #wildlifephotography The mascot of the University of Miami in Florida is a White Ibis, affectionately called Sebastian the Ibis. They choose it for their heroic ability to withstand hurricanes, which is the name of the university’s football team.

Tricolored Heron Egretta tricolor #photography #birds #wildlifephotography 🪶 A colorful heron with a mix of blue-gray, lavender, and white. Unlike other dark herons, they have a white belly.

Red-tailed Hawk Buteo jamaicensis #photography #birds 🪶 The Red-tailed Hawk has a thrilling, raspy scream that sounds exactly like a raptor should sound. Whenever a hawk or eagle appears onscreen, no matter what species, the shrill cry on the soundtrack is almost always a Red-tailed Hawk.

Great Blue Heron Ardea Herodias The heron's call, often a loud, harsh croak or squawk, can be a form of communication. This vocalization might occur during feeding, when the bird is startled, or as a territorial display. #photography #birds #wildlifephotography 🪶

Huge Waterfall Icicle A waterfall, normally rushing with life, now transformed into a magnificent frozen masterpiece. Giant icicles hang like crystal daggers from the cliff's edge. #photography #landscape

Sandhill Crane Antigone canadensis I was able to shot from an elevated position to get this unusual perspective. There were more than 20,000 at this location. Jasper-Pulaski Fish & Wildlife, Indiana #photography #birds #wildlifephotography

Red-winged blackbird Agelaius phoeniceus The Red-winged Blackbird have many female mates – up to 15 in some cases. But all is not as it seems: one-quarter to one-half of nestlings turn out to have been sired by someone other than the territorial male.😅 #photography #birds #wildlifephotography

Tufted Titmouse Baeolophus bicolor They use natural holes and cavities left by woodpeckers. Their dependence on dead wood for their homes is one reason why it’s important to allow dead trees to remain in forests rather than cutting them down. #photography #birds #wildlifephotography

Prothonotary warbler Protonotaria citrea #photography #birds #wildlifephotography It is named for its plumage which resembles the yellow robes once worn by papal clerks in the Roman Catholic Church.

Cedar Waxwing Bombycilla cedrorum The Cedar Waxwing is one of the few North American birds that specializes in eating fruit. It can survive on fruit alone for several months. #photography #birds #wildlifephotography 🪶

Red-bellied woodpecker - male Melanerpes carolinus The red-bellied woodpecker got its name due to the faint reddish tinge on its belly. This can be a bit misleading because the red patch isn't as prominent as the bright red on the back of its head and neck. #photography #birds #wildlife 🪶
