Some things to know about General Brown: - 41 years of military service - F16 fighter pilot and instructor with 3000 flight hours, 130 in combat - Master’s in aeronautical science - son of a U.S. Army colonel and Vietnam veteran - grandson of a WW2 veteran

Number of Canadians interested in statehood I met at the first USA-Canada hockey game? Aboot zero.

As the Kremlin apparently pushes for new elections in Ukraine, remember former Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko, poisoned with dioxin when he ran against the pro-Russian candidate in 2004.

Consider the precedent here - the U.S. demanding fully half a country’s resources as payback for aiding its defense: Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said the United States was demanding that Kyiv “give away” 50% of Ukraine’s rare minerals while offering no security guarantees.

So as I’m asking our Kyiv correspondent about Ukrainians’ reaction to the Riyadh talks, we can hear another incoming drone and anti-aircraft fire in response, one of close to 200 drones Ukraine says Russia fired overnight. Atmosphere for peace?

What is the precedent for peace talks not involving one of the parties at war, in this case, the country that was invaded?

New: US retail spending plunged last month, falling for the first time since August, as high inflation continued to bite. Retail sales plunged 0.9% in January, down from December’s upwardly revised 0.7% gain and well below economists’ expectations of a 0.4% decline.

This is an explicit endorsement of Russia’s (false) justification for invading Ukraine and an unqualified victory for Putin: "I believe that's the reason the war started: because Biden went out and said that they could join NATO, and he shouldn't have said that,” Trump said.

“Be careful. When a democracy is sick, fascism comes to its bedside, but it is not to inquire about its health.” Albert Camus

If this is just negotiating gambit by Trump on Ukraine, why does he begin with maximalist positions for allies - Denmark and Greenland, Canada as the 51st state, Gaza as an American possession - and a raft of concessions for a chief American adversary in Russia?

Trump’s comments and opening position on negotiations is a worse case scenario for may Ukrainians and Ukraine supporters. He appears prepared to make a deal on Putin’s terms.

It is beyond time to stop dismissing Trump’s claim on Gaza as bluster, given he repeated it sitting next to the leader of the country he claims will be made to accept its people:

Forced displacement, territorial acquisition, withholding aid to key allies: a combination without any clear precedent for the U.S. Given Trump has repeated this demand, will the nation stop dismissing it as bluster and begin weighing the costs and consequences? www.nytimes.com/2025/02/10/u...

To the folks who say his Gaza plan is just bluster, Trump describes what remains the home to two million Palestinians as “a big real estate site”, before reiterating “the United States is going to own it and we’ll slowly – very slowly, we’re in no rush – develop it.”

The biggest difference between the Nixon era and today is that, in those days, people still believed in the power of facts, and could agree on what they were. Today, not so much.

Breaking: Breaking: A federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to immediately halt its plans to put thousands of USAID employees on administrative leave tonight.

Breaking: Trump says he plans to “quickly and very surgically” fire some FBI agents involved in January 6 investigations.

Breaking: A federal judge paused Thursday’s deadline for federal employees to accept the Trump administration’s so-called “deferred resignation” offer while more court proceedings on the program’s legality play out.

So after his aides reframe his words and columnists argue he’s just trying to shake things up, Trump himself says that the U.S. would in fact take possession of Gaza under his plan.

New: A second federal judge has blocked Trump’s EO that seeks to end birthright citizenship, saying it “conflicts with the plain language of the 14th Amendment, contradicts 125-year old binding Supreme Court precedent and runs counter to our nation’s 250-year history of citizenship by birth.”

Lost in the (understandable) focus on Trump’s vow to take ownership of Gaza, the president teased an announcement in the next four weeks seemingly related to possible annexation of the West Bank by Israel. Without Gaza or the West Bank, what and where is a potential Palestinian state?

Pay attention: Trump says “I do see a longterm ownership position” in Gaza for the U.S.. This is the U.S. president saying his country will buy foreign territory whose residents have expressed no such interest in leaving or selling.

U.S. troops? Or U.S. property developers? Or both? Trump just now: “The U.S. will take over the Gaza Strip…We'll own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous, unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site. Level the site and get rid of the destroyed buildings”

Don’t miss this: Trump just reiterated from the Oval Office that he wants Palestinians to leave Gaza: “I’d like to see Jordan and Egypt take some…the Gaza thing hasn’t worked, it’s never worked,” adding “I think if they had an option of moving…I would think they would be thrilled.”

New: FBI employees have sued the Acting Attorney General James McHenry, accusing Justice Dept of violating the Constitution and privacy laws by demanding agents complete a survey allegedly designed to “purge” bureau personnel involved in investigations related to President Trump and Jan 6 attack.

Explain the logic of roiling markets, antagonizing allies and turning the Canadian and Mexican public against the U.S. in exchange for border security commitments that were already on the table?

What is the value of US international commitments when they come and go or come into question every few years? (See Paris Climate Accord) Or trade agreements, even those negotiated by the same person? (See USMCA) Same for international organizations. (See NATO and WHO) 1/

New: Lawyers for Department of Justice prosecutors and FBI agents called the dismissal of employees who worked investigations related to President Donald Trump a "violation of the due process rights" and threatened legal action should their dismissals be upheld, according to a Sunday letter.

🚨 Characterizing migrants as “terrorists” will trigger a number of standby executive authorities that give the executive enormous powers…including surveillance powers and indefinite detention (hence the camp in Gitmo). They are using the 9/11 playbook

He's not blaming DEI, he's blaming women and non white people.

President Donald Trump’s desire to buy Greenland “is not a joke,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Thursday, acknowledging that Trump approaches foreign policy “from a transactional business point of view.” 1/

Asked just now if race or gender played a role in the crash, Trump answered: “It may have.”

Breaking: A passenger aircraft crashed into the Potomac River near Reagan National Airport outside of Washington, DC, after it collided midair with a US Army Black Hawk helicopter as it approached the runway, according to the Federal Aviation Administration and defense officials.

Breaking: The White House Office of Management and Budget has rescinded the federal aid freeze, according to a memo obtained by CNN from a Trump administration official.

—>> No, the New Jersey drones were not aliens or a foreign attack. In her first press briefing, WH Press Secretary says the drones were lawful and approved by the FAA: “This was not the enemy.”
