This is the scaenae frons of the Merida theater, one of the best conserved Roman theaters, and one that follows the rules laid out by Vitruvius in “De architectura”. Even today it’s used as a theater during the summer festival

Born on this day in 1500, Charles V, here brilliantly painted by Titian in 1548 after battle of Mühlberg. Because great rulers deserve great portrait painters!

2025 in one headline.

Absolutely @eddavey.libdems.org.uk

The axis of evil used to have a rather simple ideological reference point of being anti-west, but now it’s just “no ideology, we just really fuckin love murder”

The Camel Site in northern Saudi Arabia is such a gem. About 7,000 years ago, people used stone tools, raised platforms, ladders, and incredible skill to carve life-sized camels into the rock faces. Fascinating article by @mariaguagnin.bsky.social and colleagues anetoday.org/guagnin-came...

This is the peristyle, a space surrounded by columns, behind the stage in Mérida’s Roman theater. One of the few theaters to feature it, it was a place for social gathering during intermission. This is how it looked 17 years ago; vegetation has been changed now for some reason.

Procession in the Piazza San Marco, Venice, 1496. In front march members of the Scuola of San Giovanni Evangelista, who have the BEST relic! By Gentile Bellini, whose day is today.

One of the weirdest, but in a nice way, paintings I have seen today in the “nudes” exhibition at the Carmen Thyssen in Málaga has been this “Spain looking at you” by Eduardo Arroyo, using the colors of the Spanish flag, red and yellow, to create strange rhythms and fleshy, pink shades throughout

NEW — 19-year-old DOGE engineer Edward Coristine turns out to be the grandson of former KGB spy Valery Martynov, who played a role in a sprawling 1980s espionage saga. www.jacobsilverman.com/p/prominent-...

Not a day went by when Biden was POTUS that Trump just sat quietly by. He attacked Biden and Dems everyday and never stopped. Very disappointed in Biden and Obama for not being front and center everyday while Trump blames Zelensky for a war he didn't start and sides with despots to enrich himself.

This Roman mausoleum in Abla does not look at all like one, mainly due to the heavy “restoration” that has made it look like a cistern or something like that. Romans were all over the place in Spain, so no wonder we find them here, in south-western Spain

This altarpiece belongs to the Annunciation church in Abla, a small town in northern Almería, Spanish (and Andalusian) southwest. Although a catalogued cultural asset, it’s probably not in anyone’s bucket list

Elegant company gathering for luncheon, 1596. Table is minus one chair bc tiny dwarf will stand. Servants at right bring food out from kitchens. Hans Vredeman de Vries has thought of everything, & it's his day.

Excited to host @moudhy.bsky.social at this years HistFest at the British Library. More details soon!

Kamala was right. And it only took him less than 30 days to roll over for Putin.

If it hasn't sunk in: The United States is aligned with Russia in a war of aggression against Ukraine and the broader democratic world.

I haven’t been too prodigal about my own town and its religious/cultural manifestations, but they are interesting, as examples of a tradition of Andalusian religious statuary that goes back to the Baroque but also as singular instances of public (once a year) art…

He's exactly right, even more obvious after Trump's ignorant comments yesterday blaming Ukraine for starting the war (against Ukraine). www.lemonde.fr/en/internati...

'It's morally disgusting': Trump torched for lying Ukraine 'should have never started' Putin's war

Thank you Sadiq for speaking out!

Cortona Annunciation altarpiece, painted in the 1430s by Fra Angelico, master of many annunciations. His day is today.

Castel dell’Ovo, called that way because once upon a time it had an egg-like shape, is smack in the middle of the bay of Naples, and has this beautiful color when the sun is setting. It’s the oldest in the city, and has been used by all of the different rulers of the city, from the Greek on.

Competent leadership is taking 800,000+ casualties in a 3 year war of choice that has achieved precisely nothing!

🖼️ Paul Klee, Kokoschka, Chagall…

Erculanum is the lesser brother of Pompeii and, unlike the latter, can be seen easily in a leisurely afternoon. And it includes amazing mosaics, like this one in the House of Neptune and Anfítrite. The mosaic gives the name to the house where it is, and it’s an amazing, detailed representation
