Another one from the "I didn't realize they would eat my face!" file.

I invented a new phone to help save time in the morning

Unison is the largest women’s organization in the UK. It has a million women members. The Unison women’s conference just voted for a motion that said; “trans women are women and trans men are men” with no-one speaking against it. Transphobia is a top-down, elite practice.

Shaun is a very insightful and entertaining writer, an open-minded (but not so much that his brain falls out) appreciator of historical context and earnestly made games, and gosh darnit just genuinely good people. You will learn a lot if you subscribe!

The real appeal of retro gaming for us isn’t even playing the games we grew up with. It’s sticking a toe into a massive library of titles we never knew about, or games we couldn’t try because we didn’t have the necessary hardware or cash. It’s looking at possible futures that never came to be.

It made me cry. In a good way.

one thing that Democratic politicians should take note of is that the overlap between “great political optics” and “actual morally good stuff” is really big right now

This is your periodic reminder that friends don't let friends buy Uline packaging.

I understand you've been running from the man who goes by the name of the Sandman.

turns out the United States was an incredible moneymaking engine that ran on wokeness

The main thing America has sold the world for 75 years is the idea of its fundamental competence. Now that that idea has been so violently exploded, what is left? Advanced scientific or medical research? Manufacturing prowess? Cheap labor? Rare minerals? Unusual agricultural products? I am curious.

"The federal government isn’t just pressuring universities over speech — it’s literally disappearing students for their political expression. If you support actual free speech, now is the time to speak up."

“The author has spent 20 years researching and teaching these texts, and she has come to feel a sense of connection to some of their authors: the junior scholars, the skilled scribes, the bored doodlers, the cranky teachers, the bossy siblings and working mothers.” 100% yes. What a lovely review 🥹

This is the op-ed that the Tufts student, just arrested by ICE, co-wrote for her student paper last year. It's also the only evidence that Canary Mission, the doxxing site, cites as evidence for her "anti-Israel activism." As op-eds go, it's no big deal. At all. www.tuftsdaily.com/article/2024...

Disappeared Tufts Human Dev. PhD student Rumesya Ozturk is also a graduate of Teachers College - she’s a dev. psychologist studying children’s media & prosocial development. Béla Bartók was born on this day in 1881. There are few pieces of music I love more than The Wooden Prince and the Philharmonia's playing is absolutely incandescent in this performance conducted by Neeme Järvi. One of my favourite recordings.

Hoisting this up from the replies: cosigned, and also check out the Cincinnati Symphony with Paavo Järvi doing a Concerto for Orchestra double-header. Lutosławski was not just one of Poland's greatest composers but also a hero of Solidarity.

If nothing else, at least new generations will come to understand and appreciate Leonard Cohen's "Waiting for the Miracle".

tomorrow is Béla Bartók's birthday fyi. set aside some time to listen to his string quartets, to really listen. very very worth your time, you will remember the day you put aside your other work to listen to the Bartok quartets.

Macbeth has murdered sleep.

Your timeline has been blessed by a fuzzy fly!!

Remembering for some reason how surprised everyone was at how quickly and comprehensively the USSR disintegrated, like it had already rotted from the inside and all that was left was a facade that seemed impressive and enduring but was hollow as papier-mache.

Such a delightful way to celebrate the diversity in Earth's crust
