My only criticism of George Orwell’s 1984 is that it wasn’t titled 2025.

The AP was banned from the event but the French press corps conspired to get a US AP reporter inside and insisted she be allowed to ask her question.

It’s done.

The great @rexhuppke.bsky.social with some truth-telling about Trump selling out his voters now that he doesn't need them anymore www.usatoday.com/story/opinio...

JUST IN: A federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to resume hundreds of millions of dollars in payments for U.S. Agency for International Development projects.

Medicaid covers nearly half of all children born in the country and around two-thirds of nursing home care for seniors. The Republican Party is voting today on a budget framework with will gut Medicaid to finance more tax cuts for the top 1%. "Party of family values."

Kind of feels like there wasn’t a mandate to destroy the health insurance program that covers 24% of Americans in order to fund a giant tax giveaway for billionaires and corporations, but maybe it’s just me.

DOGE has deleted the top five highest savings claims on its “wall of receipts” leaderboard after various news outlets pointed out multiple errors in its calculations.

Ouch. I'm glad judges are pushing, but at some point they need to get over their habitual deference to the government and handle this as they would most cases, to wit: "Counsel, step outside the courtroom, get on your phone, and bring someone here who can answer my questions. You have one hour."

“They laid her face-down on the floor. Two of them were on top of her, holding her down, and then eventually they boosted her up on her feet and dragged her out the door."

I was proud to be part of the United States team that rallied the world to support Ukraine. Now, I’m horrified by what we’ve become. A tragic day for democracy and an indelible stain on America’s history.

Someone give Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly a medal—she’s one of the few in the federal Judiciary who seem to be awake. Yes, exactly what is Musk’s role, how the hell do he & DOGE end up in the government without congressional authority?

The Trump administration's efforts to slash research funding have US graduate students, postdocs and other early-career scientists fearing for their careers. Some might leave the country -- or abandon research altogether. https://go.nature.com/43ao2zq

this week's cover is on point ht: @jamiegangel.bsky.social

Just a reminder that what he's talking about is the private information about every American and business, and there are laws against this access. "Transform the way the government works" by doing what? Targeting opponents? Microtargeting political ads so Republicans never lose?

Holy shit. This is scary. Senator Chris Murphy just revealed on the Senate floor that Republicans now have the votes to cut $2 trillion in services for seniors on Medicare and kids on Medicaid. Tomorrow is the House’s vote. $2 TRILLION IN CUTS. The worst part 👇

The very first Lichenomphalia umbellifera lichens I found. I think you can see why I lost my mind over them and am still obsessed with them. Distance shot below ⬇️ #fungifriends #fungi #mycology #naturephotography

Absolutely

Firing 7000 IRS agents will make it even easier for the rich to get away with skirting what they owe. But it's also a gift to the multi-billion dollar tax prep industry. Fewer IRS agents to help you file your taxes means more money in the pockets of companies like TurboTax.

Elon just sent us all an email demanding a 5-bullet progress report by EOD Monday. FEDS please hold for Altgov guidance. Meanwhile, help us draft our report: 1. Held convos without pronouns 2. Practiced Roman salute 3. Checked genitals in bathroom 4. Burned all books 5. Threw out all spoons

VACCINES SAVE LIVES Vaccines ended the COVID-19 pandemic. Vaccines and other public health measures save the lives of millions of children worldwide. Do not let RFKJr and the Trump admin take us back to a time when 5 in 10 children died before the age of 5. theconversation.com/infectious-d...

"Unfortunately, rather than be shocked by each time Trump or one of his closest allies utter something openly authoritarian, we need to take a step back and realize that the Republican Party has become an authoritarian political party."

The Trump Administration is maintaining the NIH grant freeze despite lawsuits challenging the order, a Nature article reported today. Science funding in the US is already lagging, leaving researchers in limbo. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

The thing about destroying NIH is NIH’s scale in medical research just dwarfs everyone else. For ex, in 2023 the American Cancer Society gave out $64.5 million worth of grants. Sounds big, right? But NIH’s budget was $49 billion. With a B. Kill NIH and the floor drops out of US science.

The quickening pace of corruption - the brazen use of the White House to enrich himself and his friends - is stunning. Soon, before we know it, government will no longer serve us at all. It will just be a mechanism to enrich billionaires loyal to Trump.

As flu rages, the Trump administration has pulled the plug on a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention flu immunization campaign that targeted high-risk groups, including pregnant women.

Glacier National Park isn’t just a breathtaking landscape—it’s a living testament to the hard work of federal employees who care for our public lands. From park rangers & forestry crews to dedicated biologists, these individuals ensure that our natural treasures endure for future generations.

The good news: CDC's webpages have been restored following court orders. The bad news: many have this despicable banner attached to them. We will be getting into misconceptions in gender ideology in a later post. For now, we are hurt and ashamed, and we stand with the LGBTQIA+ community.

Wonder if Elon could survive a week on the salary we make. While he burns through $8 million a day, the working class struggles—yet he paints us as the enemy.

813 US billionaires held a record $6.72 trillion in wealth at the end of 2024. The bottom 50% of Americans held roughly $3.9 trillion in wealth. When 813 people control more wealth than half a country’s population, we have a very serious problem.

History doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes…

Remember: The oligarchs who control our economy and democracy seek to divide us so they can become more powerful. They want us to turn on each other so we don't look up and see where all the wealth and power have gone. Don't fall for it.

This. Especially Senate Republicans.

Money talks

Wow.

Don't let Trump flood your zone. Stay focused. Keep your eye on what this corrupt regime is really doing — looting the government to line their own pockets with massive tax cuts and the ability to steer more federal contracts their way.

“We must especially beware of that small group of selfish men who would clip the wings of the American eagle in order to feather their own nests.” -FDR, 1941

The irony of the richest man in the world almost single-handedly destroying an agency designed to help the world’s poor, so that the U.S. federal budget has more room for another giant tax cut for the richest man in the world and his pals, should not be lost on anyone. [Cartoon by Mike Luckovich]

⚡️'No point trying to negotiate' with Putin, Yulia Navalnaya says. "Even if you decided to negotiate with Putin, just remember he will lie," Navalnaya, widow of late Russian dissident Alexei Navalny, said at the Munich Security Conference two days before the anniversary of her husband's death.

Senate Armed Services Chair Senator Roger Wicker torched Pete Hegseth’s speeches at the NATO conference in Munich this week, calling it a “rookie mistake” to tell the summit—and the world—that it would be “unrealistic” for Ukraine to return to its prewar borders.

In the words of one Public Integrity Section lawyer, much of what happened today alone is “gut-wrenching.”

Don’t lose hope. Remember, Watergate took over two years to fully unravel from the initial break-in to Nixon’s resignation. Just like then and now, Americans are losing faith in their government. We are documenting every illegal action and will hold this administration and Elon Musk accountable.
