In modern history, what is the least popular that party leaders have ever been to their OWN voters? Second place was the GOP in 2009, where their net approval with Republican voters was only +6. Currently Dems are -8, shattering all previous records.

in view of Sean O’Brien’s latest bs, I’m reposting this essay I wrote a while back that calls out this conservative strain in the history of unionism and highlights an alternative vision for labor politics medium.com/quote-of-the...

Across the country on Feb 19, workers impacted by cuts to federal funding are coming together to say: Hands off our healthcare, research, and jobs! Join us in one of more than a dozen cities (& if there's not an action near you yet, sign up to be the first to know when there is): labor4highered.org

Rosa Luxemburg’s “The Mass Strike” resonates with what Hayes is saying here. Luxemburg’s famous defense of the strike tactic was occasioned by the 1905 Russian Revolution when mass strikes started more or less spontaneously in response to heightened repression. (www.marxists.org/archive/luxe...)

Musk’s attacks on federal workers pose an existential threat to the whole labor movement, all workers, and the broad Left It’s alarming that most people don’t yet understand the stakes 🧵

The only hope for higher ed is the academic labor movement. Join this @higheredlabor.bsky.social call next week to plan our fight us06web.zoom.us/webinar/regi...

An EEOC admin. judge sent a fiery all-department email this AM alleging: 1. Trump's exec orders & instructions to target private citizens with them are illegal. 2. the judge had sent an earlier email with a similar tone yesterday that later vanished from their sent folder & colleagues' inboxes.

NLRB's Acting General Counsel just send this memo out to staff saying, "I cannot promise you that everything is going to be OK." "I know that the past few days and nights have been extremely scary and distressing for some of us."

Something I learned in the course of organizing a union at my workplace—and something that is keeping me from completely losing it as these ridiculous executive orders and actions accumulate: We organize on our timeline, not on the boss’s timeline.

“The weight of the entire animal kingdom [...] is around 0.5% of Earth’s biomass, or around 4 gigatons of life. As of 2020, humans have produced 8 gigatons of plastics. By 2040, it will be double that.” newleftreview.org/sidecar/post...

What are your best ideas for higher ed under a 2nd Trump admin? State/local policies that could be enacted? Things private schools could do? Where are potential areas of opportunity? Thinking of putting something together for Public Books. I’m all ears. Or email me at dennis dot m dot hogan @ gmail

For the Arendt Center’s “Quote of the Week” blog, I wrote a brief reflection on an under-appreciated chapter of Arendt’s The Human Condition—“The Labor Movement”—in light of (somewhat) recent events in labor politics. medium.com/quote-of-the...

Does anybody know whether photos of Conference on the Cybercultural Revolution (1964) are preserved in any archive? I’m wondering whether anyone took a photo of James Boggs and Hannah Arendt sitting on the same panel...

a poignant and perceptive passage from Rancière’s essay for the recently deceased publisher Eric Hazan

Reminds me of this classic poem by June Jordan, “Letter to the Local Police”

Conservatives have long hosted two approaches to sexuality in their coalition: Heritage, evangelical-style sexual Puritanism, and Trumpish, “barstool”-style boorish sexual entitlement. Some people think these are hard to reconcile, but the central aim of both is the domination and control of women.

the nyt ignores—and implicitly endorses—the nationalist sadism that is the substance of the legislation in question. this is what herrenvolk democracy looks like, I guess
