There are a total of 3 Park Rangers manning Yosemite National Park. I want you to wrap your head around how monumentally dangerous and irresponsible that is. People are going to die.

This was supposed to be a post about my lab's first funding of the year, a diversity supplement to fund our amazing research technician. The award never arrived. Now it's a post about the value of diversity and trying to persevere in these dark times. devinenilab.org/news/diversi...

Every day, the goals become clearer: The point of DOGE is not efficiency, but regime change www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

“What part of diversity, equity, and inclusion do you have a problem with?” www.science.org/content/arti...

This is going to go on at many universities - the uncertainty will lead to fewer graduate programs. It will hobble scientific research which appears to be the goal.

I believe the urge I'm feeling is what @erinbiba.bsky.social referred to as the Jewish epigenetic instinct to flee to another country...

I had two grant proposals up for review in the NIH Bacterial Virulence (BV) study section. It was canceled without notice this morning. Without those grants, my lab must close within a year. And so the purge of scientific research in the US continues 🤬 #MicroSky 🦠🧫🧪🧬🔬

Yesterday was the darkest day of my professional life so far. Many of NSF’s best and brightest people fired indiscriminately. The terms of their firing cruel. My colleagues matter, they are valued and they make a difference. I have no words. www.npr.org/2025/02/18/n...

During the mass firings yesterday, NSF’s Chief Management Officer told us, “This is the first of many forthcoming workforce reductions”. subscriber.politicopro.com/article/eene...

Devastating.

The NSF EPSCoR grant paid for my first summer of research. The NSF Advanced program funded the conference responsible for me not quitting grad school. The NIH LRP help me do a post doc by reducing my financial burden. I was a free lunch, WIC and Section 8 kid.

For over 20 years, I've been at schools affiliated w the Council of Independent Colleges; in my experience, CIC has been an unflinching advocate for higher education. So I'm unsurprised, but still heartened, to see this from CIC president Marjorie Hass today. www.insidehighered.com/opinion/view...

In light of this news, I would love to see @asm.org state how they plan to handle content containing “banned words” in their own journals. #MicroSky

Okay some fresh morning brain thoughts on the @asm.org statement: #MicroSky 1. @blackinmicro.bsky.social did SO MUCH to lead this push for ASM to reaffirm their support for diversity and inclusivity in the profession. Please consider donating to this organization: blackinmicrobiology.org/donate/ 🧵

If you are one of the #CDC #HHS #FDA #NIH employees who have learned today that your employment is being abruptly ended, we want to hear from you. @altcdc.bsky.social www.statnews.com/2025/02/14/f...

I maxed out my credit card, emptied my savings account, and took out a loan to move from Alabama to Bethesda, MD. I don’t even qualify for unemployment since I’ve only worked at NIH for a month. I will be financially and medically devastated. Seeking suggestions for anywhere that’s hiring!!

I was pretty critical about @asm.org's anticipatory obedience to the EOs so I want to amplify this statement & point out some positive actions - They admitted they'd made mistakes & apologized to affected individuals and in a town hall - They committed to holding ABRCMS 2025. This is a big 1/

FINALLY

The removal of a transgender reference from the National Park Service’s Stonewall website wasn’t done by NPS staff. Elon, care to elaborate?

Scooplet: The US Fish and Wildlife Service has issued stop work orders, frozen funding, and ceased communication for all of its international grants, jeopardizing critical conservation overseas. Much of this money is appropriated for Interior, not foreign aid. www.vox.com/down-to-eart...

NIH's proposal to cut the grants it pays for medical research will not just hurt elite coastal universities. Who else has a lot at stake? The states of Missouri and North Carolina. The University of Texas Cancer Center. Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

Microbe Girlie Funland fairies (@hannahgreich.bsky.social) delivered our hoodies today!!

For those unfamiliar, the Associated Press is a non-profit cooperative formed by US news organizations that covers news for its 1,300 member papers, radio stations and TV stations. It is the foundation of the American press. It has always gotten the first seat and first question at official events.

The vast majority of students I've interviewed for graduate school participate in programs like this. For most it's the first time (and maybe only time) they get to see what a scientist does. This will hollow out the next generation of science in the US

They want to doxx faculty of color/queer faculty and anyone who teaches that we are human

Missouri's AG Andrew Bailey is suing Starbucks, arguing that its workforce is too "female" and "non-white" and as a result Missouri consumers “pay higher prices and wait longer for goods and services" because its workforce is "less qualified" This is a brazenly racist and sexist lawsuit.

The Indigenous People of North America have decided to go back to calling the Gulf of Mexico, “Chalchiuhtlicueyecatl”. It is what the Nahuatl People originally called it as it is the domain of the goddess Chalchiuhtlicue, who is assoc w/water bodies, including the Gulf of Mexico.

Toad went back into the house. He got into bed and pulled the covers over his head again.

I resent the idea that holding our institutions and organization accountable is divisive or takes away from the larger fight. Especially when the main problem is that they aren’t fighting now. Accountability isn’t division. Accountability is how we move forward.

Okay interesting: “We will champion scientific integrity, including academic freedom, the inclusion of diverse perspectives, and policies grounded in scientific evidence” and ASM is included on this open letter

I must say, despite the chaos unfurling around us, I'm so grateful for the joy of teaching this semester. Both of my classes are just a delight!

Howard University is now a R1 university, the first HBCU with a research one designation. H-U definitely knows!

For those who want a good summary of the ASM Town Hall. It was nice to see ASM own up to their mistakes rather than doubling down on their original press release. Time will tell if they do what they need to do to regain trust. #MicroSky

Excellent statement in ASM town hall by Henry Williams about @asm.org not consulting with members and groups impacted by its defensive posture and highlighting this letter from @blackinmicro.bsky.social.

@oliverio.bsky.social giving a super cool talk at ESF on the microbiome of sourdough starts!!
