'Questions for Anthropic (or any other LLM-pusher)'. Sharing the questions I prepared for a panel about Claude in education, in case they're useful to anyone else resisting the narrative of AI inevitability danmcquillan.org/questions_fo...

To save runaways from slavery who were trying to make lives in the North “illegally,” local Vigilance Committees formed. They kept watch for slave catchers, secreted away those in danger, and posted placards that outed slave catchers, sometimes hounding them till they left town.

An absolutely essential read on the intersection of private group chats, public social media, and Silicon Valley’s economic power, and how private group chats on Signal and WhatsApp have helped to drive the resurgence in far-right conservatism in the US.

Movie you’ve watched more than six times using gifs.

Reminder: always write outside of the CMS.

Should this happen (and I hope to god it doesn't because that likely means everyone with an Autisum diagnosis on their medical record, including myself, will end up on this registry) self-diagnosis will become not just more important but necessary.

Every day I teach I begin my class by asking my students "What did you do over the weekend that made you happy?" Most of the time they answer with silence.

NEW: Operatives from DOGE are building a master database at DHS that could track and surveil undocumented immigrants, two sources with direct knowledge tell WIRED. @makenakelly.bsky.social and @telliotter.bsky.social with this major scoop: www.wired.com/story/doge-c...

I visited the Josiah Henson Museum and Park, which aims to educate the public about the life and legacy of the man who inspired the character Uncle Tom

Has this waste of space of a human even watched an episode of Love on the Spectrum?

WHAT?! WTF?!

She's here 🥰 Even my fiance, a die-hard iPhone user, likes this "dumb" phone.

What songs are still relevant in 2025? I'll start: youtu.be/Z0GFRcFm-aY?...

Dear RFK Jr., 🖕 Sincerely, A late-diagnosed Autistic

I'm getting married this year and was planning on taking my fiance's last name. Even with a valid passport and access to my birth certificate, I'm seriously reconsidering it...

The sheer amount of smut at Target

Tech journalism has a bunch of its own, too, and it drives me batshit when an editor decides to insert one into a review of mine.

Early Facebook, MySpace, blogging on Melodramatic, "sharing" music with other students in my college dorm via MyTunes, and playing Star Wars: The Old Republic with my guildmates.

Gonna tell my kids this is Gomez and Morticia Addams.

OpenAI is using Studio Ghibli-style memes as an ad hoc promotional campaign for its new image generator—despite Ghibli founder Hayao Miyazaki's famous hatred of AI. Sam Altman made his X avatar a 'Ghiblified' portrait. Disgracing Miyazaki is part of the point: It's more proof to them tech has won.

Crossing into the United States has become increasingly dangerous for digital privacy. Here are a few steps you can take to minimize the risk of Customs and Border Patrol accessing your data.

“The more I learned about the tapestry of histories, cultures, contexts, infrastructures, politics, and economics that shape public education, the more I realized how ill-suited cultures of tech were to the field.” Read @meenakshimani.bsky.social's reflections on her PhD journey ▶️ edin.ac/41xdOH7

There's a new book about Facebook called Careless People, and based on the press pieces and reviews currently circulating, it's hard to tell if it's a historical book or more of an ongoing crime report.

Related: in 2023, the Skirball had a wonderful exhibit showcasing the Red Scare's effect on LA's film industry. Lots of historical paralells between then and today. If you're not up on the history, I highly recommend learning about it. m.youtube.com/watch?v=EgKG...

A penetrating look at the arms race of LLM use and detection. I would note that we have no evidence to support the "embrace AI" view of tech companies. We need to remember writing is more than words. www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/john-...

Tea, Earl Grey, hot.

"the Harvard Electricity Law Initiative reviewed 40 special contracts...between utilities & data centers. If these contracts offer discounted electricity rates to data centers,...other customers may end up paying for the shortfall through higher utility bills." web.archive.org/web/20250314...

Send us some shit. Open 4/20 - ???. we pay $150 for prestigious works of literary merit. We got the Paris Review at home and it's called the Taco Bell Quarterly, just as good, cheaper, actually free and completely made up

Nowhere near enough media coverage about the interconnection between the destruction of content moderation, the proliferation of LLM "generative AI" bullshit engines, the death of consensus reality/knowledge making, misinformation and disinformation, & the aims of Western authoritarians and fascists

Black people built America's military cemeteries. I mean that literally. Black soldiers were frequently assigned burial duties in the Civil War, WWI, and WWII. And also abstractly: American military burial culture was profoundly shaped by the mourning ceremonies created by Black Americans.
