"Totalitarianism in power invariably replaces all first-rate talents, regardless of their sympathies, with those crackpots and fools whose lack of intelligence and creativity is still the best guarantee of their loyalty." - Hannah Arendt

Once upon a time, these were actions by a private company. Now they are actions being undertaken by a high-ranking government official, in connection with his public activities. This raises 1A issues that didn’t exist before.

Watching the "thank-you" set of credits at the end of #WorkingGirl, I saw one to "7 World Trade Center." Its first iteration was brand new when the film was being made in 1987-88, but it did not survive the Sept 11, 2001 attacks, due to a chain of damage that caused structural failure. #TCMParty

I never worked on Wall Street, but the opening fifteen minutes of #WorkingGirl (with the ferry, the Twin Towers, the crowded sidewalks, the brokerage's green-on-black mainframe desktop monitors, and the rampant workplace sexism) should be on a loop in a history museum. #TCMParty

Can you imagine the afterparty? #SNL50

We have little more than one person who prefers to get people to Mars over finding a cure for cancer - and he's got President Trump's ear and power for the moment.

This might be the most nakedly corrupt document I’ve seen on DOJ letterhead — and I wrote a history of Watergate!

Trump appointee (and former Clarence Thomas clerk) told Trump he can't strand USAID workers or force them home immediately. He did so, in part, bc when he asked why this was so important, they offered no proof of fraud or corruption. www.emptywheel.net/2025/02/08/t...

I'm waiting for Hegseth to make the "scarcity" excuse (that there isn't enough room, so some needed to be moved). We're talking about the second-largest office building in the world, with 6.5 million square feet of space. It's classic viewpoint discrimination in violation of the First Amendment.

If there is one single helpful thing George W Bush might be able to do it’s to make a public defense of PEPFAR.

This would be an unlawful seizure of territory in violation of the United Nations Charter, and the forcible transfer of the population of Gaza would constitute crimes against humanity. www.nytimes.com/live/2025/02...

Marge Gunderson provided the perfect retort to Elon Musk's "wood chipper" stunt when another greedy, immoral fool tried it in "Fargo" more than two decades ago. "And for what? For a little bit of money? There's more to life than a little money, you know. " www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmoY...

One of the legacies of the current conservative SCOTUS majority's drive to overrule precedents is that the "voluntary cessation" branch of the mootness doctrine has become very narrow. If a federal judge wants to reach the merits CJ Roberts made it easier in cases such as Trinity Lutheran v. Comer.

“If you promise people what they want, they will always believe you.” (George Orwell).

My firm is willing to represent pro bono those fired in this unlawful and vindictive purge. These dedicated civil servants were performing their jobs and upholding the rule of law.

Trump’s clash with Colombia in a nutshell: EX (pounding on your front door): OPEN THIS DOOR RIGHT NOW! You: I gave you a key, and you’ve been using that. Why don’t you use that instead? [Short pause] 1/3
