When I worked in UK academia I recall hearing of a Japanese man who was baffled at how Britain had decided to run its universities like firms. “Why? Your universities are excellent and your firms are terrible.”

Please consider nominating yourself to be a member of the Board of the #Haskell Foundation: discourse.haskell.org/t/2025-call-...

So much of “Haskell packaging is bad, it needs to grow up and be a ‘professional’ language” is actually “at work we have a very controlled dev environment and I don’t actually have to manage a Python dev environment myself”

Feeling incredibly defeated. It’s not healthy to entertain this feeling very long. Folks who have it worse need my help. Don’t currently see a path to being a useful ally. Gotta figure it out, though.

. @jenniferhomendy.bsky.social and her team at the NTSB did a great job today fielding questions from the press. Super professional and with the appropriate level of respect for the incident.

My world is crumbling but I made a decent latte art swan today

The FAA removing guidance for doctors approving pilot medical for trans pilots is such a “cruelty is the point” move. Having to go through the special issuance process is needlessly tortuous for something that cannot possibly affect your performance as a pilot. Infuriating.

Who in industry is offering PhD-level internships related to Lean, Proof Automation, or Constraint Programming?

I hope you all had a very bebop Christmas. (Transcription of Joe Pass)

does anyone know offhand which recording of Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5 ends with a joyous bellow of a guy in the crowd who can't help himself because the finale goes so hard? I thought it was Karajan with the Berlin Philharmonic but none of the recordings on YT Music I've found are it

Is this anything?

I know I’m biased but I believe tailwheel aircraft look better when taxiing. It’s like they’ve got their chest puffed out.
