A "confederacy of dunces"

I think it’s worth highlighting that the actual NIH cut order is much, much worse than the Project 2025 version from which it sprang

DOGE is reportedly threatening NOAA with massive staff and budget cuts. NOAA houses the National Weather Service and National Hurricane Center, which produce forecasts and warn people about storms. This attack on public safety is ripped straight from the pages of Project 2025.

"Federal workers said they believed that Trump and Musk were trying deliberately not just to sever foreign aid and parts of the domestic social safety net, but also to create a climate in which the government itself fell apart." New from @samsteindc.bsky.social: www.thebulwark.com/p/trump-and-...

NEWS: Senate Finance Committee Senator Wyden's Questions here in condensed format with link to the full letter #TeamDemocracy

The word for this is "coup."

NEW: Are you a federal worker with a disability that requires remote work that has received a return-to-office order? Here's today's non-lawyer, personal experience recommendation: www.muellershewrote.com/p/are-you-di...

The universe speaks in mysterious ways.

I think this is our future unless someone stops him. Musk’s plan for X has been for it to replace the entire banking system. His keen interest in seizing control of Treasury payments (and its tech) may forebode an intention to have such payments go through X www.theverge.com/2023/10/26/2...

Um, hi. Congressional Democrats, exactly WHAT IN THE FUCK (!!!!) ARE YOU DOING?! Can we PLEASE wake up and get this foreign actor the God fearing fuck out of our government?! What exactly are you waiting for? Here is your actual formal invite to this fight. 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼 www.nytimes.com/2025/02/01/u...

Re-posting in hopes of reaching a wider audience-- Any options to reverse Trump dissolving USAID if/when House Republicans prove feckless? (Don't believe individual members of Congress have standing to sue, based on a judge tossing House Dems' lawsuit seeking Trump Hotel docs.)

There appear to be at least three separately operating heel factions breaking things within the government in wholly different ways right now. There's the Miller-headed immigration one, the DOGE/Elon one, and a Project 2025 OMB one. This dynamic hasn't showed up in mainstream reporting at all.

The ordinary questions you might ask: Is Elon Musk a government employee? Are his lieutenants? Does he personally hold a security clearance and do his “lieutenants”? Have they all undergone a background check? Are they subject to foreign influence? Have they ever done a sieg heil on stage?

Trump follows through with his threat to impose stiff tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China, setting the stage for a destabilizing trade war with America’s largest commercial partners. www.nytimes.com/live/2025/02...

My mentions are filled with people insisting Senate Democrats are powerless. They’re not. They can throw up roadblocks by denying unanimous consent, forcing quorum calls, using holds and filibusters, etc It’s so easy to figure out even a dimwit like Tuberville managed to pull it off.

In case it’s not clear— 15 states are using taxpayers’ resources to file a brief on behalf of one of Trump’s businesses.

No one's blaming Democrats for causing this crisis, but yes, many of them are failing to meet this moment. One Democratic senator could bring the chamber to a halt. House Dems can go to fed agencies being gutted by Musk with cameras in tow. Governors can push back. State AGs can bring lawsuits.

HOW IN THE NAME OF ALL THAT IS HOLY ARE YOU SO BAD AT THIS?!?!?!?!?

This threatening tweet was deleted by Trump’s dumbest son 20 minutes after he posted it.

are eggs cheaper yet

Couple things here. Trump is within his rights to respond, but: Party member sanction? Cool. Makes sense. Enhanced CBP screenings? Pointless, but fine. Escalating 25/50% tariffs? Monumentally stupid. Will make coffee, limes, avocados, cut flowers, and bananas cost more for US citizens.

A bizarre aspect of our time is how plainly unhappy most billionaires are. For every Mark Cuban, who likes sports, or Warren Buffett, who likes trading stocks, there's 50 absolute freaks with malformed personalities, an insatiable urge to cause suffering, and an incurable sense of victimhood.

You can help! Please see this (very) short video for a primer on the effect of one of the recent executive orders. If you support veterans, here's a way. Share this video. Write your reps. youtu.be/B6Wv0c4BnSU afghanevac.org/elected-offi... #AfghanEvac

“It sounds like Big Brother,” one NIH researcher said. According to reporting by Science and email memos reviewed by Mother Jones, upcoming meetings where studies are officially greenlit were suspended. That puts new funding for all sorts of research, from cancer to the opioid crisis, on hold.

CNN has now confirmed this. www.cnn.com/2025/01/24/h...

As in his first term, Trump’s second term will quite literally kill Americans. MAGA, MAGA.

All the people who were shrugging and equivocating over Elon and whether he was aligning with Nazi, far-right forces should be launched into the sun. May they never be taken seriously again.

This is the guy who started the Silk Road dark website which was used the facilitate major global drug trafficking. Was serving life in prison. But when Trump wanted the Libertarian Party endorsement he promised them this. He never heard of Ulbricht. Even spelled his name wrong.

Just stunning that Roger Wicker thinks that Pete Hegseth isn't man enough to stand up to the 11-hour grilling that Hillary withstood.

Hey MAGA! Just because someone is a woman or a racial or sexual minority doesn’t mean they’re a DEI hire. Yes, there are unqualified people being appointed to government positions in the Trump administration, but they are mostly unqualified, straight white male idiots.

" It’s a messy, confusing legal situation, but one whose outcome is soberingly simple: the fate of over 60,000 ballots — and, as a result, the outcome of the state Supreme Court election — hangs in the balance of the North Carolina Supreme Court." www.democracydocket.com/news-alerts/...

They are such mrons

Deleting this because after a day of trying to get to the bottom of it, it’s still actually not 100% clear to me.

You will read countless times today that the LA mayor cut the LA Fire Department's budget by $23 million. That is a lie. The budget was actually *increased* by $50 million.

"Western experts filling the op-ed pages with ideas for securing a post-settlement Ukraine have been negotiating with themselves. Putin has never agreed to the establishment of a demilitarized zone, foreign troops on Ukrainian soil, or a continuing Ukrainian military relationship with the West"

This man and a small group of capitol police officers singlehandedly saved our democracy four years ago. In November, 77 million Americans said "to hell with them" and voted for the insurrectionists. Your "Back the Blue" flags are a pathetic disgrace and your patriotism is bullsh*t.

Four years ago today, our country faced the largest threat to our democracy and peaceful transfer of power since the Civil War. This attack was premeditated and planned months in advance by violent militia members with close associations with then-President Donald Trump. (1/11)

The fake Jefferson prayer recited by Speaker Johnson is part of an effort to retcon Jefferson's stance on religion. Jefferson's "wall of separation between church and state" has long been a problem for Christian supremacists—this fake attribution is designed to confuse and cast doubt.

This is highly disconcerting. WaPo editors killed an editorial cartoon that mocked Bezos and other tech oligarchs. Will the Post respond to this? Democracy dies with accommodation. anntelnaes.substack.com/p/why-im-qui...

With all the talk about Judge Merchan’s plan to impose a sentence without jail time or fine & with an unconditional discharge on January 10, I’d urge him instead to condition Trump’s discharge on obeying the presidential oath he will take on January 20. That’s a promise we know Trump won’t keep.
