My only criticism of George Orwell’s 1984 is that it wasn’t titled 2025.

Orion with the Flame Nebula, Horsehead Nebula, and the Orion Nebula taken in Bortle 5 skies west of Oklahoma City. 1400s of integration time, 70x20s, f3.5, 100mm (cropped) on Nikon Z6. I am still learning how to process with Siril, but I’m generally pleased given my equipment. #astrophotography

Would any Medium subscribers comment about your experience with the service? Do you find the content to be helpful and worth the subscription fee? They send me “teasers” about programming topics that seem interesting. What about Substack? I seem to remember some controversy with that.

For this week’s 52Frames “Triangular Composition” Challenge, I framed the Devon Energy Center within the triangular truss of the Skydance Bridge in Oklahoma City. By luck, the shadows of the bridge also formed triangles on the pedestrian walkway. #photography #52frames_triangularcomposition

I had many ideas for this week's 52 Frames challenge, but few came to fruition. I went with this shot, looking east from the OSU Hamm Institute of American Energy in OKC. It was cold and windy, and I was lucky to capture the flags waving in the frigid breeze. #52frames_motionblur #photography

If you love great storytelling and interesting characters, check out “The Lies of Locke Lamora”by Scott Lynch. Very enjoyable! #booksky #fantasy

This week’s 52Frames photography challenge is “Puddle”. This idea occurred to me as I walked by the neighborhood tennis court after a rain, but I came back and staged this shot later - even bringing more water to replenish the puddle (to the dismay of my neighbors)! #52Frames_puddle #photography

This week's 52Frames photo challenge is "blue". The deep blue sky at sunset paired with Venus and Jupiter at "Pops 66 Soda Ranch" in Arcadia, Oklahoma was beautiful tonight! #52Frames_Blue #astrophotography #photography

I have fond memories spending time with my grandparents on both sides of my family. "Granddad" worked for years at Phillips Petroleum, and at home he had an amazing mechanical calculator. My brother and I were captivated as it cranked out whimsical calculations. #52Frames_somethingold #photography

The Oklahoma City National Memorial is beautiful. Shown here is the eastern Gate of Time, with 9:01 marking the time of the terrorist bombing on April 19, 1995. On the right is a remnant of the federal building, and on the left are empty chairs each representing one of the 168 victims. #photography

I enjoyed this week’s #52Frames_leadinglines challenge and learning how to incorporate leading lines into my #photography. I was the crazy guy in the median looking south down Lincoln Boulevard at NE 36 St. in Oklahoma City. Fun fact, the dome and “The Guardian” sculpture on top were added in 2002.

The Moon and Mars were striking in the sky, although as expected the photo was difficult to expose properly. I settled for two shots. Mars is barely visible below the Moon in the well exposed photo. #astrophotography

What better way to stay warm on a cold, snowy day than to make tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches using homemade bread? I have a new appreciation for how difficult it is to photograph food. Week 2 of 52Frames Challenge. #52Frames_whatieat #photography

Beautiful conjunction of the Moon and Venus tonight! #astrophotography

I was so fortunate to see this beautiful alignment of the Moon and Venus along with purple and pink clouds tonight during sunset. I couldn't have asked for a better setup for week 1 of the 52Frames challenge. #52Frames_selfportrait #astrophotography #photography

Great graphic and shameful that the US doesn’t have universal healthcare. IMHO providing a base level of preventative healthcare for everyone, free of charge, will help prevent more costly care later. It makes sense financially for the taxpayers.

What a fantastic 2024 year for astronomical events in Oklahoma - the April 8 total solar eclipse, amazing auroras that we normally don’t see this far south, and Comet C/2023 A3. #astrophotography

I finally had success using my iOptron SkyGuider Pro to track the Andromeda Galaxy tonight. Oval stars are still an issue, but I really enjoyed the process of capturing the image (100 x 20s, ISO 1600, 200mm, f2.8 on Nikon Z6) and stacking/editing in Siril. #astrophotography

Here you go Mum, a new iPad mini. Of course I’ll set it up. What’s your Apple password? It’s written in your bible at home. Ok. <Drives 114 miles> /1

It's amazing to me that, even after 10 years, we have images like this of a comet nucleus. Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, by Rosetta.

How can we interpret signals from extraterrestrials when we struggle to communicate amongst ourselves? My new book (out now in the UK, out in the US on Jan 13) "Mixed Signals" delves into how the Cold War forged SETI and radio astronomy as we know it. www.politybooks.com/bookdetail?b...

As a sci-fi fanatic, I am secretly hoping the drones turn out to be a fleet of time-traveling historians and sociologists from the future studying how Earth survived the “Great Drone Scare of 2024.”

There is, of course, no quantitative way to rank amazing things that happen in space. We cannot measure their absolute magnitude nor assign them a numerical value, and trying to do so is something of a fool’s errand. I did it anyway. arstechnica.com/space/2024/1...
