Rainout today puts the Cardinals in a tough spot. Plan was for McGreevy to pitch June 24 vs. the Cubs; team comes up a day short of that on regular rest. Speaking of: he’s eligible to be a 27th man and would be on regular rest tomorrow. We’ll see!

“We’re just not getting over the hump.” Sometimes, the simplest explanation for a team’s uneven play is the correct one — the roster doesn’t quite have the talent to create the depth that sustains a long season: www.bnd.com/sports/mlb/s...

Sign, sign, everywhere a sign.

Easy to say now, I guess, but I felt like the Red Sox trading Devers was inevitable from the second he stepped up to a microphone and said “I play third base” in spring.

That sure is a whole lot of money Boston just freed up.

The Cardinals got the go-ahead run in scoring position in the ninth inning but could not cash it, dropping three of four over the weekend. They were close, they pushed, they couldn't quite get over the hump. There's a metaphor in there, somewhere. Day off in Chicago before the White Sox on Tuesday.

Nolan Arenado wins a 12-pitch at bat leading off the ninth against Trevor Megill with a sharp single to center. Tying run aboard.

For most major leaguers, it's axiomatic to say they're the best baseball players they've ever been around. So, for Fathers Day, I asked the Cardinals a question -- when did you realize you were a better ballplayer than your dad? They came up with some good answers: www.bnd.com/sports/mlb/s...

Ivan Herrera firmly thumps a ball to the Brewers bullpen to cut the Milwaukee lead to 3-2 in the eighth.

A series of correctly placed, softly tapped grounders have given the Brewers a 3-1 lead in the seventh.

Hot dog races went Polish, Italian, Chorizo, Polish this weekend.

Sac fly for Avans following a wild pitch gives Milwaukee a 2-1 lead.

Solo shot for Yelich leading off the bottom of the fourth ties the game.

RBI ground out for Contreras after a hit and run and some smart base running by Herrera puts the Cardinals up 1-0 in the fourth.

Brendan Donovan leads off the fourth with a sharp single to center to become the first Cardinals baserunner of the day.

Miles Mikolas has six strikeouts through three innings.

Hoskins had some words for Contreras as he came across the bag on that ground out, and it looked like a few for Stubby Clapp as well.

Iván Herrera is plugged on the inside of the right forearm as the second hitter of the game and he is in a lot of pain. Away we go!

Brendan Donovan returns to the Cardinals lineup at its top: Donovan 4 Herrera 2 Burleson 7 Contreras 3 Arenado 5 Gorman DH Walker 9 Scott II 8 Barrero 6 Mikolas 1

A fun wrinkle to the burgeoning (?) kerfuffle between the Brewers and Cardinals: both teams are in Chicago this coming week, Cardinals on the south side and Brewers the north, and they are set to stay at the same hotel.

"One of their players, he liked to talk from far away, but then when he got in my face, didn't say shit," Willson Contreras said postgame. "I was looking for more than that. He seems to be tougher. He's a fucking pussy. I'm not gonna name no names. He knows who he is."

The Cardinals bust out of their losing streak with a dual fireworks show -- bat as well as scrap. Willson Contreras provided some of both, and Nolan Gorman had a big shot to pile on the bat half. They'll try to salvage a split tomorrow afternoon behind Miles Mikolas.

Actually, looks like he just stared in. Might not have said anything at all.

William Contreras leads off the bottom of the ninth with a moonshot that reduces the Cardinals lead back to three.

Helsley keeps the ninth even with this game beyond a save situation. Cardinals not messing around -- and likely happy to get him a touch with a liiittle pressure off.

Willson Contreras mashes a ninth inning homer and has a lot of words for the Brewers dugout as he passes and takes a long, slow trot. 8-4 in the ninth.

Maton whiffs Chourio to strand the bases loaded and struts off emotion-free. Cardinals take their three-run lead to the ninth.

The Brewers were down 7-1 in the fifth. The tying run is standing on first base in the eighth.

Inside out double from Frelick cuts the Cardinals lead to 7-3 in the fifth.

Nolan Gorman almost just hit the truck. 7-1

Second pitch from Quintana to Contreras gets him square in the back. Willson sprints off, picks up the ball, and puts it directly in Quintana's glove. Now warnings, and Marmol is out to talk to Carapazza again.

Pallante hits Hoskins fairly high and he spun right around to chirp at the Cardinals dugout. Temp it going up and up on this one.

Passed ball squirts away and Chourio sprints home to cut the Cardinals lead to 4-1. Pallante looks pretty unhappy about the contact at the plate.

Leadoff triple for Chourio in the fourth is the first Milwaukee hit of the day.

Two-run single into left-center for Scott makes it 4-0 in the fourth.

Durbin chucks a would-have-been double play ball into right field. 2-0 Cardinals and threatening more in the fourth.

Routine 5-3 but Contreras backed up off the bag into the path of Durbin, who collided with him and went down. Looked like the Brewers dugout, Rhys Hoskins chief among them, was very unhappy with that choice. Lil' chirping back and forth.
