To [email protected] 1. I saw things you people wouldn't believe. 2. I monitored attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. 3. I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. 4. I lost moments in time. 5. I memorialized tears in rain.

A reminder that dogs’ noses look like angry aliens.

We need to make sure that everyone understands how important science is for EVERYONE not just for scientists...

New York Times article now up on Federal Register stuff. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/21/s... 1/n

We have to stand up for science! Anyone who can join these rallies and believes that US science must be protected should come! @standupforscience.bsky.social

Read ASM’s statement on the sweeping removal of federal health agency staff, which will be catastrophic for American science and technology. asm.org/Press-Releas...

BREAKING On Monday, Popular Information broke the news that the NIH had frozen virtually all grant funding in violation of 2 federal court orders On Wednesday, NIH leadership distributed a memo, acknowledging that its funding freeze was illegal and directing staff to resume issuing grants.

🚨 Exciting news! 🚨 ASM welcomes new Editors-in-Chief for our journals starting July 1! 👏 Join us in thanking our outgoing leaders & congratulating Romney Humphries, Marvin Whiteley, Ashley Shade and Ira Blader! Read more: asm.org/Press-Releas...

BREAKING: 22 states sue NIH over Trump administration's new 15% cap on overhead for federal research grants. Suit filed federal court in Boston contends lifesaving research 'will grind to a halt' under the policy. Doc: storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

A useful tool and a great thing to do... 5calls.org/issue/nih-ns...

Elon Musk has purchased $40M on a series of Superbowl ads attacking USAID as "wasteful spending." Colleagues have created this video and are asking that it be posted across social media at exactly 5:30 pm EST today: www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqUE...

Executive wants to frame the NIH indirects cut as $4B in savings. But given that NIH returns $2.5 on every $1 investment, this would actually cost US economy a net $6 BILLION (per year!). Not to mention the human costs of wrecking education and research sectors and the communities they serve.

This will change things. Direct costs will have to cover some essentials like access to compliance (IACUC, IBC, IRB) support on campuses

Joey Votto's classic description of why it's so hard to hit a front door two seamer: "For those of you interested, out of the hand the ball appears as if it’s going to hit you, then it gets jiggy with it." 🤣

Today is Retraction Day, when we observe the anniversary of the retraction (Feb. 2, 2010) of the fraudulent paper that purported to show a link between vaccines and autism. 🧪#medsky

He did so back in 2011, along with nine other councillors, over concerns it was too expensive to pump the mineral into the drinking sources of Calgary, Alberta. Since then, the 1.4 million people who live there have been without fluoridated water, and it appears to have come at a cost.

Funny. Got a reminder that I have a progress report due to the NIH. Dead letter office vibes....

Let’s play around with cosmic distances shall we? Because I don’t think the human brain can actually understand it. But I’m gonna use rice, and say 1 grain = 10,000 miles (~16,000 km). That means the circumference of Earth is just under two and a half grains. These contain all our lives 🧪🔭 (1/n)

A quick reminder: For every $1 of research funding, NIH generated $2.46 in economic activity. This includes funding jobs in all 50 states. This isn't a red/blue thing: 8.9 jobs per $1M in CA & 12 jobs per $1M in GA. #AcademicSky #PhDSky #MedSky #HealthSky #healthequity #SciComm bit.ly/40NkIc0

Why should the public care about the freeze on the NIH? Aside from the need for scientific pursuits to make our society better… -For every dollar we invest in NIH research, there is a $2.5 return. -Research dollars help fund universities that employ non-academics. (1/)

“The impact of the collective executive orders and directives appears devastating.” scim.ag/40ureTO

Devastating for scientists and their research, and everyone who benefits from that research. I’m not sure if everyone outside academia is aware that a delay or “pause” in grant funding often means the researchers themselves are lost from the field, along with their expertise.

It is a great honour to invite you to a symposium to celebrate the career of Mark Carrington. An exciting set of talks, particularly if you are fascinated by trypanosomes.

Can't stop thinking about the McSweeney's Sad Dad Bands, (first published January 14, 2022.) Back on Twitter, I started a thread of my own riffs on Sad Dad Bands on January 17, 2022. Here is that thread, recreated. www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/wha...
