Casual but enthusiastic observer of birds, insects, wildflowers, fungi, moss, clouds, trees, bumblebees seen while endlessly walking small dogs and navigating small talk in the process. ‘What are you looking at?’ ‘I think it’s a blackcap’ etc. Lives in UK

Does anyone know if this sort of orchid which has pseudobulbs will produce repeat stems from a pseudobulb that has flowered in previous years or only from new growth? I can find out very little about its growth habits. It’s called Prosthechea cochleata (clamshell or cockle shell orchid)

My life in a goreyshell (watered half the plants and then somnolence arrived and the sofa ate me)

Could someone do me a favour and explain the joke about the elephant and the mouse because my mum told it to me when I was a kid and then howled with laughter and I didn’t get it then and I’ve just met it again in Anne Tyler’s The Golden Braid … and I still don’t get it. 🤷‍♂️

Usefully sober fact sheet on Ukraine. Please share with those who need it. understandingwar.org/backgrounder...

Ah I have delved into my browser (DuckDuckGo) settings a bit and attempted to switch off the ‘new’ ai offerings. But it will infect everything won’t it? Like a mycelium at work

Is it possible to block sites that are just AI generated garbage?

I think I saw a couple of meteors while I was out there, do they go up the sky as it were? The satellites go across don’t they?

Folks with any reach on Bluesky, please consider reposting so I can find friends old and new: I'm Rob; I like fantasy books, maths and physics, ancient stuff and mythology, linguistics and music, British wildlife, and a whole bunch of other stuff. And I might occasionally mention Doctor Who

“If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.” A classic quote from Malcolm X, who was assassinated 60 years ago today.

AI will be writing student essays based on this kind of rubbish.

Is there a term like ‘diagnostic overshadowing’ for when people put symptoms down to a medication and do not consider other possibilities?

oh lord, I ended up having to write something about what's going on with Apple's Advanced Data Protection - what it is, what it does, and what happens now for UK users. www.ianbetteridge.com/apples-advan...

Reading Grace Dents latest review and can only say my mother now deceased was way ahead of trends often asking for artichokes for a substitute dessert, though just the regular sort, ….artichoke Mille feuille - what would that look like?

Leonard in Grantchester is very Gromit like in this series

Aha well thank goodness for that. I didn’t know this had worked its way in here anyway. I note that Siri is particularly stupid these days, have they downgraded it so it can’t work properly unless the AI is on and I am speaking to it in Americanese? Am I bovered?

If it looks like there are two different fonts on this clay tablet from ancient Babylon, that’s because there are. In December of 603 BCE, a young scribe named Balāṭa made a faithful copy of a far more ancient inscription of Sîn-Kashid who had ruled Uruk over 1,000 years earlier.

3 of my long, thin 'sun' series of paintings. Painted on Italian hand made paper which is - I confess - a bit of a nightmare to paint on. Very unforgiving and disintegrates if you try to correct your drawing with a rubber. But I loved how they turned out.
