Prof in a red state, in response to my post on another platform: “This is indeed happening everywhere across the biomedical fields. I have *excellent* #undergraduate students who are on a #prehealth track -- they are being told that internship programs are either in doubt or have entirely closed.”

The biggest attack on biomedical research ever and what do we academics do? "Let's go over to this little dark private corner to just talk science amongst ourselves." Um...isn't this partly what got us into this mess? The public needs to know what it is we actually do with their money...

Counterpoint: with the NIH attack threatening biomedical research as we know it, the country’s best scientists have retreated to the safety of bsky right at the time the battle for the future of science is happening on X. It’s rough over there, but, aren’t all battles worth fighting for rough?

More than 185,000 veterans who use the VA for health care have been diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury

Nearly 7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's. By 2050, this number is projected to double.

“DOGE terminated more than 60 Health and Human Services contracts including a clinical evaluation of an Alzheimer’s and traumatic brain injury drug and a study of smokers with chronic lung disease” www.wsj.com/politics/pol...

The official stat is that each dollar invested in biomedical research generates 2x, but I can guarantee that for my trainees it is 10x-100x, maybe more. This is so shortsighted, just from a pure business standpoint for the country, let alone the cost to our health.

"BUt yOu'rE trAinINg moRe PhDs to JusT stAy aCadeMia?!" Here's a (short) list of where some of my students went in the private sector after graduating: -health and safety specialist for oil rig workers -R&D director for tech company in Silicon Valley [1/2]

Know any kids in your life who want to be a doctor or scientist, with ambitions to cure cancer or find a cure for Alzheimer's that's afflicting a loved grandparent? 🧵

Particle levels in homes in L.A🧵 Plot has 3 useful pieces of info: 1) compare in burn zone --> adjacent to burn zone --> distal 2) compare indoor (grey) v. outdoor (green) 3) compare levels to EPA thresholds (blue and red dotted lines)

L.A. friends: WHAT CAN YOU DO RIGHT NOW WITH THIS INFO?

First data available from our LA Fire HEALTH study just released + our new website. First data only indoor and outdoor particles: Key Takeaways on 🧵

Our paper shouldn’t have to be relevant, but, here we are: —> Our results highlight the primary importance of vaccination for reducing the risk of measles transmission among students —> addt’l and significant risk reduction can be achieved thru enhancing building ventilation and filtration systems

This will be THE book to read on Forever Chemicals. I'm pre-ordering now (and you will, too, if you read this thread from Mariah Blake)

I'm impressed with Grok so far. Prompt: "Hey, Grok, what is 'survivor bias' and how does it show up when people talk about Covid?" "Survivor bias is a logical error..."

My boss is very good - I'm lucky. Really nice to work with Dr. Nadeau on supporting people in L.A.

So. Much. Flu.

“The post-World War II system of government-funded research universities has fueled American scientific and technological dominance, but our continued pre-eminence is in no way assured. To torch America’s advantage in these realms seems like madness. But there’s a lot of madness in the air these days

I have been talking to the media, Time, Fortune, NBC, etc., to explain how the onslaught on science and NIH will impact the health of all Americans. Everyone knows someone who has cancer, heart disease, or depression. Spread the word about how cutting science impacts all. time.com/7216299/nih-...

Pennsylvania about to lose ~$250M in local jobs because of the NIH cuts. And that’s just two universities. (Is PA a swing state? I can’t remember?)

The University of Iowa received $190,931,119 in NIH funding in 2024. There is critical research happening in every state. Vital for the health of people you love, vital for the local economy, vital for the national economy.

Missouri received $888,538,970 in funding from NIH in 2024

More voices speaking up. Missouri👇

The NIH cuts impact every state, and will impact the people you love in your life. This is a massive mistake. Good to see leaders speaking up.

Good sign that more are speaking up. We need a lot more leaders pushing back on the NIH cuts. It’s bad for business, it’s bad for health, it’s bad for global competitiveness.

“The outcome of that is going to be frayed immunization rates and more disease.” -Dr. Paul Offit, director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia

So few know this: —> “The reality is that existing rates of indirect cost recovery do not cover actual indirect costs, but require subsidy from the university that performs the research. ICR is not icing on the budget cake that universities can do without.” www.insidehighered.com/opinion/view...

L.A. friends: I joined Katherine Schwarzenegger Pratt and Lindsey Burghardt (Harvard Medical School) on Katherine's podcast, BDA Baby, to do our best to answer questions everyone has: what's in the air? is it safe for newborns? for kids to be outside? how to think about risk? what can you do now?

Very helpful - Universities, academic medical centers/teaching hospitals, and research institutes...👇 www.arnoldporter.com/en/perspecti...

This is not “rooting out inefficiencies in the system”; this is shutting down the country’s biomedical R&D pipeline. Will result in loss of jobs, hits to local and national economy, and losing ground in global race. (Oh, and worse health for Americans everywhere.)

We crossed 1.5C. Whoops!
