Very excited to write that our mental health & neuro grant to the @wellcometrust.bsky.social has been funded! Over the next four years, we'll be using THC as an experimental compound to understand the social 🫂, biological 🧠 and computational 🤖 mechanisms of paranoia in health and disorder.

🚨 New paper in Molecular Psychiatry led by the amazing Maite Arribas 🚨 We used EHR data from 6,462 patients and temporal network analysis to look at the dynamics of symptoms in the prodromes to depression, bipolar disorder and psychosis t.co/0v013kFbB7

The symposium “Metacognition and social cognition: common ground or false equivalence?” organised by @smfleming.bsky.social is about to start! With @mkwittmann.bsky.social @vhsouthgate.bsky.social @joebarnby.bsky.social #EWCN2025

Final reminder that I’m advertising for a postdoctoral research associate to help me with a project on eating disorders and control-seeking, using #ComputationalPsychiatry! Applications close on the 12th. jobs.york.ac.uk/vacancy/rese...

A few spots still remaining for our Cognitive Science Research Skills workshop later this week at UCL (in-person), sign up for free here: www.eventbrite.com/e/cognitive-...

🚨 New paper (with @eitanwagner.bsky.social @joebarnby.bsky.social and Omri Abend) on how we (should) evaluate Theory of Mind in Large Language Models. While recent work claims LLMs have ToM capabilities, we're missing crucial aspects from cognitive science. Here's why this matters 🧵

Symposium submission deadline now EXTENDED to 15th January! Please get together and submit your most interesting computational psychiatry projects - this will be a great meeting...

We have a starter pack that we will continue to expand that represents the #MentalHealth and #Neuroscience research community. Please let us know if we missed you! #Psychology #AcademicSky #Research go.bsky.app/6LKA9F4

📢 Exciting news: Notifications for our AAAI workshop on Theory of Mind for AI are out! Congratulations to all those accepted 🎉 We received over 50 submissions of cutting-edge research across AI, multi-agent systems, cognitive science, neuroscience, and more. sites.google.com/view/theory-...

Go work with Alex! She's awesome, you'll learn loads and get heaps of room for developing your career 🚀

I am very excited to announce that I’m joining the editorial board of Computational Psychiatry, cpsyjournal.org! Looking forward to reading new contributions that advance the field, particularly in social cognition, interaction, and decision-making 🫂

Lee HS, Holt DJ, Park S (2024) Altered Representation of Peripersonal and Interpersonal Space in Psychopathology. Clinical Psych Rev 114, 102509. doi.org/10.1016/j.cp... Regulation of the space surrounding the body -> central role in adaptive behavior -> direct implications for psychopathology

Only 10 days left to send us submissions 🌶️ 🔥Join us in Philly for a unique opportunity to cross disciplinary boundaries to define and understand theory of mind ! sites.google.com/view/theory-...

CPsy journal now on Bluesky! please follow for updates...

I'm putting together a Computational Psychiatry Starter Pack, still tiny! Drop a comment if you feel like you should be added :) go.bsky.app/5PTy9Zj

I've started working on a (very incomplete!) starter pack for social interaction researchers! If you're working in this space, please asked to be added (or suggest others)! Meant to be inclusive of many disciplines, methods, interaction types, and types of interacting agents: go.bsky.app/44VAEhU

My dept (UCL Experimental Psychology) has 12 funded PhD studentships for next academic year (Sept 2025 start)! These are only for UK citizens or with right to remain. I would be happy to support applications from students who would like to join my lab. See: www.ucl.ac.uk/pals/researc...

It was only a matter of time - a metacognition starter pack! Do let me know if I’ve missed people or if you’d like to be added #neuroskyence 🧪 go.bsky.app/9PSjwLF

📢 Out now in Nature Mental Health Social factors greatly impact the progression & treatment of psychiatric conditions — @joebarnby.bsky.social, @xiaosigu.bsky.social & I propose that modeling social complexities rooted in mental health & disorder will enhance computational psychiatry rdcu.be/dYl7T

New work led by Michael Moutoussis! When evaluating others' motives, people first make a rough good/bad judgement and then (if all goes well) refine their views. Serotonin may help us learn beyond the good/bad impression: academic.oup.com/scan/advance... #neuroskyence #psychscisky

A reminder: we currently have an open call for our AAAI workshop on Theory of Mind 🔥 We encourage submissions from cog sci, CS, and psychiatry - we want to bring together several fields, work together, and understand ToM 🧠🤖 sites.google.com/view/theory-...

We're hiring a pre-doctoral RA to work with us on the Hypatia project in 2025 🎉🧠🧑‍🔬 You will be supporting & assessing the development of cognitive decision-making models for scientific, industrial, and clinical use Dm for informal queries! jobs.royalholloway.ac.uk/Vacancy.aspx... #neuroskyence 🧪

We’re putting on a workshop - expertly led by Nitay Alon - on Theory of Mind across natural and artificial intelligence at AAAI2025 - send in your abstract and be part of this interdisciplinary push to develop our knowledge and technology sites.google.com/view/theory-...

Testing if this works... Trying to make a starter pack for researchers in #perception science Please share ! Will be adding more folks as I learn how #academicsky works ! go.bsky.app/V99fSBK

I came across this cool feature of notebooklm.google (via @cjhodgetts.bsky.social @drberry.bsky.social ) - you can upload your paper and it generates a podcast-style conversation... just embedded these for a couple of our recent outputs... joebarnby.com/publications/ Some thoughts... 🧪

Thanks to Nora Raschle and the Jacob’s Centre for being amazing hosts over the last week for our FENS-Kavli exchange! It was exciting to blend approaches to think about how to best test neurocomputational mechanisms of social cognition in childhood and adolescence 👀 🧒

Nitay Alon's excellent work simulating the benefits and pitfalls of recursive theory of mind is now published in Computational Psychiatry. cpsyjournal.org/articles/10.... Simulations show how ambiguous behaviour must be viewed as intentional with an overmentalised lens to generate paranoia.
