New reporting finds that the Bavarian State Painting Collection possesses at least 200 paintings that it knows were looted from Jews during the Nazi period, including works by Picasso and Klee - but has deliberately kept descendants in the dark about this. www.dw.com/en/was-nazi-...

I'm very pleased to share news of a new project I am leading at The National Archives. PASSAGE combines archival research on the transatlantic trade of enslaved people with an international programme that centres the research of West African & Caribbean scholars. Read more here: shorturl.at/XLyC8

Very sharp and fun read, with a point that bears repeating: "What survives of the past isn’t a representative sample of what existed."

This is such an iconic story of fake provenance. The brave sailor who bought antiquities all over the world. Sure. 😆 www.occrp.org/en/feature/t...

It's hard to describe what a feat this is, and shouldered by a much smaller group than the folks who captured the data. @asegerberg.bsky.social has been chipping away at this database for years. Rescuing data is hard, but curating & publishing it is a much harder, lonely slog. Prepare for it.

Lovely little article discussing how people have been obsessed with old stuff for a long time. #archaeology #hoarders

Do people not hear themselves when they parrot the paternalistic rhetoric that global south museums can't care for repatriated objects?

UK law has changed, putting the onus onto employers to proactively prevent sexual harassment at work. Sadly it’s still a major issue. Prospect Archaeologists Branch (UK trade union) have launched a campaign and are providing advice and support, info and materials here: linktr.ee/prospectarchs

“Solidarity” is not an idea that often pops up in British newspapers, even to deride it. It’s no exaggeration to say that I have heard the word used more often in reference to a 1980s Polish trade union than as a value we might or should hold.

The security guards at the V&A are on strike and are urging the public not to visit. I sent this email to let them know that I wanted to support their #LGBTQHistoryMonth tours but can't. Sharing here in case you'd like to send an email of your own:

One of the directors of the company that owns this mouldy property currently unfit for the very elderly couple mentioned is also a trustee of the British Museum. A curse on every billionaire

it truly is mind boggling the number of times musk has retweeted literal nazi accounts, promulgated nazi theories, done the nazi salute, supported neo-nazi parties around the world, all in plain sight, yet i still haven't seen an article titled: "elon musk is an actual nazi and here's the evidence"

This makes me think of how union organizing training about mapping organizations to build communal power has us rate potential collaborators less on how vocally sympathetic they've been/ID as, more on history of action (eg did you just critique; or did you join, organize, sign a letter, show up, ?)

"We are apolitical and should not say anything that might offend a person in power" is an astonishing thing for the chair of a Holocaust memorial council to say, along with, "This Holocaust remembrance is about memory; it is not about politics."

This is a message from Eugène Delacroissant, curator of the Museum of Mankind: the Vagina Museum are ending my residency on 23rd February! :( Not as important as sharing manly knowledge, anyway. Come and see the exhibition before my unpaid interns pack it up www.vaginamuseum.co.uk/exhibitions/...

What made the 1948 expulsion of Palestinians thinkable was, among other things, the fact it was officially put forward as a "solution" by a British Royal Commission in 1937. That went beyond our wild dreams, wrote Ben Gurion at the times, we would never have dared to suggest it.

Part 2 in @thecontinent.org's #MuseumOfStolenHistory series covers Tewodros' II, King of Kings of Abyssinia, gold crown - looted during the British Army’s 1868 siege of Maqdala.

seeing takes about the aid institutions and their role in imperialism. correct. If someone said "investor-owned hospitals exploit the vulnerable to benefit shareholders" I'd nod. If their followup was "and that's why I'm turning off your mom's dialysis machine" I'd...have some followup questions

Every time you criticise "woke" for some imaginary slight, you licence stone racists to openly deny historical reality in the interests of their racist fantasies of the past, and racist power-trips in the present. grapplingwithhistory.com/2025/01/20/a...
