Three brown-headed cowbirds in silhouette with a maze of branches #birds #silhouette #photography

Most people are following me for my photography, but I'm also a pianist and will be posting music from time to time, sometimes serious, sometimes silly like this one. Here's the opening to the aria from Bach's Goldberg variations on my new toy piano. #piano #bach

Cardinal fanning out his head feathers mid-squawk while looking into some dramatic light #birds #cardinal #photography

That worm is about to go through some things #birds #robin #photography

I took this deer photo on a bright, sunny day but underexposed it quite a bit to bring out the sunlight and put the rest of the scene in shadow. But I was mainly just happy to get a photo of deer not eating or sticking their tongues out for once. #deer #wildlife #photography

This last-minute photo yesterday ended up being my favorite. I was about to get into my car when I heard a lot of birds in a tree across the parking lot. I ended up photographing them with the sun behind them, resulting in this striking silhouette. #birds #silhouette #photography

I'm looking forward to the spring bird migration to begin in a couple weeks, but for now there are still lots of winter birds around, including this mallard I saw today showing off his iridescent feathers on his head and wing while coming in for a water landing. #birds #mallard #duck #photography

Here's a composite of photos I took the other night of the progression of the eclipse. It was pretty amazing how the moon almost completely disappeared before turning bright orange a few minutes later. All of these are handheld except for the final one during totality. #lunar #eclipse #photography

It was a last-minute decision to stay up for the eclipse, but I'm glad I did. I took photos about every 20 minutes so I'll try making a composite of the progress later today, but for now, here's how the moon looked at 2:12 AM central time. Pretty spectacular! #moon #eclipse #photography

I got the gull in focus, what else do people want? Sometimes those trees just pop up out of nowhere. #birds #gull #photography

After being under the weather for several days, I was happy to go out walking with my camera a bit this afternoon and get this pretty dramatic photo of a pigeon with lots of feather detail on his head, iridescent purple feathers, and bright orange-red eyes. #birds #pigeon #photography

So many birds out today! Here are two photos of the same great blue heron taken a few seconds apart. #greatblueheron #birds #photography

I watched this eagle for about 30 minutes today until I reached a part of the trail that was flooded. So I didn't get as close as I hoped and had to take the photograph through lots of other branches, but I was thrilled to get a nice pose for this photo. #birds #baldeagle #eagle #photography

I was going through old photos and found this one from the fall—a tithonia, or Mexican wildflower I photographed during a rainstorm, its leaves just about completely eaten, with a spotted cucumber beetle sitting on the very top. #flower #photography #rain #insect

Black squirrel portrait. They're a result of a genetic mutation that affects only about 1 in 10,000 squirrels. #squirrel #wildlife #photography

One challenge with photographing birds, especially small ones like chickadees, is how little time they spend sitting still. Then again, sometimes a series of photos can go from great to spectacular in only a few seconds. #birds #photography #chickadee

Today was my first time encountering a beaver in the forest. They're much bigger than I realized. I was surprised by their orange teeth, which is a result of high iron level in their enamel, strengthening their teeth and allowing them to chew through wood. #photography #beaver #wildlife

The number one hilarious, always unflattering way to photograph any bird is head-on #birds #cardinal #photography

House finches are one of my favorite birds. it was bitterly cold in the upper midwest today, but I was so happy to see a huge flock of these little guys. #birds #finch #photography

This young deer was really far away and it wasn't until I got home to edit that I noticed he went tongue out for a lot of the photos I took. #deer #tongueouttuesday #winter #photography

I was up early this morning, so I put on a bunch of layers and went out to the lakefront. The clouds broke just in time for some nice colors and textures. #sunrise #photography #winter

I think this heron and I were equally surprised to see him catch two fish at the same time. #birds #heron #photography

There are lots of different sparrow varieties, but the white-crowned sparrow with their striped heads is one of my favorites. This one was nice enough to pose on a rock in Colorado. #birds #sparrow #photography

Double-crested cormorant flying over the water with its wings dipping just below the surface. It takes them a while to gain altitude, so they do it to create a cushion of air between their wings and the water to help with taking off. #birds #cormorant #photography

This is from a trip to Colorado in October, when I saw a bunch of wild turkeys and one walked into some very dramatic morning light. #birds #turkey #photography

Here's one of the more unusual bird photos I've taken: wide-eyed heron with his tongue sticking out weird swallowing a fish #birds #heron #fish #photography

I see these things all the time but almost never in their native habitat #photography #tennis

I saw this incredible feathery plant on a walk today. Can anyone help with identification? The growths in the photo are probably 2-3 inches long. #macro #photography

It's always a good day in the forest when there are more deer tracks than human tracks. I didn't see any deer until I was about to go home, when I spotted these three. Luckily before my hands froze they all looked up together to let me get this photo. #deer #wildlife #photography

The light on the moon last night really made the craters stand out #moon #photography

I didn't see as many birds as I hoped the other day in the forest, but the light through the trees as sunset approached was pretty incredible. #sunset #shadows #forest

I had my zoom lens out to photograph some trees on the other side of a lagoon when a hawk flew by, and I got this photo of the hawk centered in the colors in the sky as they changed from blue to orange. #birds #silhouette #sunset #photography

Lily photo from last summer sometime. It was in the middle of the afternoon, but exposing for the flower in bright sun put the rest of the scene in a dramatic shadow. #flower #dramatic #photography

Hooded merganser coming in for a water landing #birds #photography #ducks #reflection

Another photo from my encounter with a flock of hooded mergansers yesterday. They look like ducks who overdress for a party but then decide to just make the best of it. #birds #photography

Hooded mergansers are my favorite duck to encounter. I don't see them much in my area (upper Midwest) so I was happy to see a big flock today. I went home for my camera and came back to spend about an hour watching these amazing creatures. Here’s a female to start, more to come. #birds #photography

In the mountains is one of my favorite places to exist. This is from our recent trip to Colorado, hiking down from the summit of Flattop Mountain, at about 12,000 ft. #hiking #landscape #mountains

Steller's jays are one of my favorite birds to encounter. Here's a particularly introspective-looking one from our trip to the Colorado Rockies this past October. #birds #photography

After being pretty sick for the last week and seeing nothing but overcast skies for even longer, I needed this sunset tonight. #sunset #reflection #silhouette #photography

I'm continuing the process of consolidating my photo library and I'm finding old photos to share. Here's a deer from early spring with half grayish winter coat, half reddish-brown of summer. #deer #wildlife #photography

Here's another photo from a recent sunset. I don't usually use a telephoto lens for these kinds of situations but this time I did to catch bands of colors behind some trees in the distance. #photography #sunset

Photo from earlier this year of one of my favorite woodpeckers to encounter. Sometimes birds get random names that don’t quite make sense, but red-headed woodpecker seems appropriate here. And they’re one of the few birds where males and females look exactly the same. #photography #birding
