Fuck visibility. I want safety. I want to be able to cross the border without fearing my passport will be seized. I want to be employable. I want to be allowed to love who I love without interference by the state. I want to be able to piss.

I received a heartbreaking email today: A paper in a special issue I’m editing is being retracted because one of its authors is afraid of losing their job and their legal status in the U.S. if they publish a scientific study on evolution. Yes, on evolution, nature's engine of diversity.

If you accept that non-citizens have no right to due process, you are accepting that citizens have no right to due process. All the government has to do is claim that you are not a citizen; without due process you have no chance to prove the contrary.

They are arresting people on the streets, terminating their visas, and disappearing them for writing things they disagree with. This is where we are. Two months in. Right now. If you think they won’t begin coming after citizens soon, you are mistaken.

Even if it's "not new" doesn't mean don't do anything about it. Don't we want to fight this? Don't we want to live in a better world? Frustration at folks who have been willfully blind is one thing, but using it to dismiss action or outrage is anything but galvanizing.

It took less than 3 months for a concentration camp to be established and for them to brag about it, intentionally evoking Holocaust imagery while using human beings as props as they arbitrarily destroy their lives. Do you believe they are fascists now?

I don't care what side of the Israel-Palestine conflict your sympathies lie on, snatching up people with a valid student visa for the crime of writing an OpEd is naked fascism and if you don't oppose this you are a threat to this country's most basic values

Fear of retaliation for witnessing someone being disappeared from the streets for speech.

"This red scare will not end with an appeal to decency. Trump is worse than McCarthy; he is more powerful, more vengeful, and more determined to destroy institutions and bend them into subservience. But it can end with collective bravery." www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

I truly haven't even been able to take this in tonight because it is so horrifically appalling.

Unidentified men grabbing someone off the street and putting her in a car because she wrote an op-Ed. This as flatly authoritarian as anything we’ve seen in this country in a very long time.

"The report found that more civilians were killed in the first week of the Trump administration’s bombing campaign than were killed in the 12 months of US- UK strikes on Yemen that were conducted under the Biden administration from Jan 2024 to Jan 2025." The Signal chat was bad. This is worse:

Hey I don't know who needs to hear this, but if you're ever really down on yourself, remember: YOUR embarrassing shit in the chat was never a fistbump emoji about killing dozens of civilians while violating federal law. So, gold star for you!

Everyone should be reading this.

Over a decade ago, I had two people in my life at that time that nearly died from inadequate abortion access at Catholic hospitals in the US. We saw this coming. People are dead and they will continue to die as long as abortion is restricted in any way.

Dozens more pregnant and postpartum women have died in Texas hospitals since the state banned abortion, our analysis shows. As the maternal mortality rate dropped nationally, it rose in Texas by 33%.

Proposed HHS Rule Would Ban Trans Healthcare From Essential Health Benefit Coverage In ACA Plans Trump's most sweeping attack on trans healthcare so far could have devastating impacts on trans people of all ages on ACA plans. www.madycast.com/p/proposed-h...

A good thread on a proposed rule change by the department of health and human services that would create a de facto ban on gender affirming care. There is a period for public comment on this rule change and we need people out against it no later than April 11th 2025.

Almost 9 years later, I am still haunted by this Rolling Stone article from 2016 that explained how isolated DC culture really is. "In D.C., a kind of incestuous myopia very quickly becomes part of many political jobs."

1. Texas AG Ken Paxton is usurping the authority of Texas Courts in a brazen act of autocratic power. He's ordering court ordered gender changes void. He's demanding licenses and birth certificates revoked, with reverted replacements for trans people. Subscribe to support my journalism.

The horror of being a literal child and having the entire government come down on you just trying to do the activities that children do.

Canadian woman has been imprisoned by ICE for the last 9 days over paperwork issues with a work visa while trying to enter the United States According to KGTV San Diego, she was transported to a detention facility in Arizona where she was "wrapped in chains" and kept in a cell with 30 other people

The fact that such a horrifying crash may have happened due to understaffing (speculative) at Reagan National Airport of all airports feels like a cruel joke of history. #reagannationalairport

Donald Trump will now be the president again. A colossal failure by every Republican, Democratic, legal, corporate, and media institution got us here. www.rollingstone.com/politics/pol...

The common thread between trans rights and abortion rights has always been an argument of autonomy. Shoving an illogical personhood at conception argument into an anti-trans order is not about making sense, it's about controlling people's bodies and constructing whatever narrative you need to do so.

ACT UP, 1990

alright you wanna know how to support trans people? hire them. It's REALLY hard already for visibly trans people to get jobs, even before this shit. Support places that have trans people working front of house, and make sure owners know that's part of why you're there.

🏳️‍⚧️ "My transition is a vision of possibility: it is what trans kids achieve when their medical needs are taken seriously" - Jonathan Tebble www.wearequeeraf.com/my-transitio...

There's something so absurdly surreal about having COVID while witnessing the mass failure to prevent a US kleptocratic/fascist takeover and in the midst of calculating how quickly I can medically transition before the next Canadian election.
