Nobody should take comfort from Trump temporarily stepping back from the economic abyss. Instability & unreliability are now permanent fixtures of this administration. Euro leaders need to adjust to this, instead of trusting old certainties about the US that are now defunct. Chaos is now the norm.

What concerns me more than Trump's tariffs is the denial in European capitals of what is happening in world politics. This is the end of the post-war order. Delusional refusal to accept US is no longer an ally only harms European interests. Starmer needs to take note.

We shouldn't content ourselves with the fiction that once Trump's 2nd term is over, his anti-politics will be over & the massive destruction to the economy, civic society, & international relations can be repaired. "Trumpism" is deep-rooted in a rotten economic model. It's here to stay, folks.

Trump's refusal to retrieve Abrego-Garcia serves two purposes. 1. Acts of performative cruelty such as this are useful reminders of his strongman persona. 2. The incident is a useful demonstration of his intent to destroy the judiciary (Supreme Court) as a competing branch of government.

There's no better metaphor for the state of the world than watching billionaires taking hyper-polluting joyrides into space while the planet burns. They believe their wealth will protect them from the chaos and misery they cause, leaving the rest of us exposed to an unliveable world.

It is not correct that Trump has failed in his tariffs policy. He's achieved what he set out to - namely, enrich himself and his closest friends. This was always his goal. But the MAGA crowd suffering under his watch will continue to love him. That's how cults work.

By any sensible, evidence-based measure re-joining the EU should not even be up for debate. We do not live in a political climate in which evidence & logic have primacy. We live in a post-Brexit, Trumpian world of alt-facts fuelled by anger, despair & disengagement. #rejoinEU #Trumptariffs

Trump couldn't give a shit about the US, but his madness & economic illiteracy will be remembered mostly for their acceleration of the decline of US hegemony. The empire was already in decline. Idiot Trump is just quickening the process. #TrumpTariffs

Trump's threadbare "MAGA" credentials are about to be exposed as he ditches economic nationalist pretence & buckles under the pressure of the tech-bro oligarchs. This is how capitalism works, folks. Every. Single.Time. Will MAGAs eyes be opened? No. Of course not.

To understand Trump's tariffs we need Hannah Arendt. Trump is clearly attempting an economic power-grab - forcing other govts & companies to do his will. It's analogous to his domestic power-grab re: legislature & judiciary. For Arendt, this is a key step towards totalitarianism.

If Starmer had been PM in 1945, no NHS or welfare state would ever have been created, such is his obsession with "value for money". Atlee's govt created the NHS b/c the neoliberal ethos had not yet pervaded everything, inc. the public sector. Now market rationale seeps into every pore of the state.

More nonsense from Keir Starmer about "the special relationship". No such thing exists (except in the minds of UK diplomats). This is an embarrassing legacy of Britain's imperial past where she can content herself she still matters by citing how "close" she is to the big kid. #Tariffs #Trump

Today we will witness another eg of how "Labour" now functions to protect wealth. Starmer/Reeves know the dangers of stoking a far right backlash but calculate that they'd rather have Farage than a Corbynite in power. This is how far gone the "Labour" party is. #SpringStatement #SpringBudget

Ok, so the Trump administration would have us believe that it hates incompetence and inefficiency & so sacks 1000s of skilled, competent civil servants. But its response to the epic clusterfuck security leak is to attack the journalists who exposed it. American is lost. Gone. An ex-country.

The Labour Party - once proud defenders of the sick & vulnerable against the savagery of greed & power - now turns its weapons on those it was set up to protect. The only beneficiaries will be the far right, of course. But Starmer's groupies have not the vision to see it. The age of fascism begins.

The coming war against oligarchical capitalism is existential. A fight to the death. But it can only be waged by acknowledging the primacy of *class*. The postmodernist obsession with identity has left the w class unprotected from the savagery of neoliberalism. Time to restart the class war.

It's actually quite amusing watching the pro-Trump mouth breathers this side of the pond performing the preschool equivalent of "intellectual gymnastics" trying to deflect from JD Vance's gratuitously insulting remarks about the UKs' military. And by "quite amusing" I mean fucking hilarious.

Rachel Reeves is set to announce that "the world has changed" & tell us how the poorest will help pay for it. Funny how the world never seems to change for the rich. Their wealth & power must always be protected. Labour, like the Tories, is a party of, by and for the interests of Capital.

Message to Keir Starmer - the longer you content yourself with a delusional refusal to grasp the gravity of the geo-political reordering that has taken place since Jan 20th, the more damage to UK/European interests will be done. #Ukraine #Trump #Zelenskyy

For 80 years American presidents hid behind the UN Charter in public, while using imperialism in private to strong-arm weaker countries to bend the knee. Yesterday, Trump and that little rat Vance dispensed with the foreplay and showed the world how it's really done. Perhaps we should be grateful.

UN Charter on human rights & international law. Born 24th October 1945. Died 28th February 2025. RIP. #Zelenskyy #Trump #Ukraine #Disgusting

Just wondering how Starmer is going to "both sides" this. #Trump #Zelensky #Ukraine #Starmer #Putin

I suppose we should be thankful to Trump and Vance that they paid the world the courtesy of providing a front row seat to watch the disintegration of the international rules-based order in real time. They humiliated Zelenskyy. And it was carefully planned.

Problem for Starmer - what happens when the MAGA movement votes in a President who isn't a narcissistic man-child who can't be won over by state visits to the King? Those behind Trump (Vance, Bannon et al.) don't care about such things. What does Britain do then?

Today at the White House we'll witness the bizarre sight of Keir Starmer acting as though (1) the international rules-based order still exists & (2) that Trump gives a shit about the so-called "special relationship". I actually feel sorry for Starmer.

Keir Starmer funding miliary spending increases on the backs of the poor at home and abroad. Badenoch telling us how we need to withdraw from international human rights bodies. The danger of far right populism does not come from new parties. It is already here in the political "mainstream".

Starmer announces plans to cut foreign aid to fund military spending increases rather than a wealth tax. Labour is not a party of the working class. It is a tool of Capital.

Gramsci posited periods of struggle between old and new world orders (interregnum). With Trump 2.0 & yesterday's UN vote, that interregnum (2016-25) ended. A new age begins of US isolation. So long as Starmer/Macron/Merz cling to what has passed, the damage to European interests will only increase.

Remarkable performance of Die Linke in German elections. When compared with SPD implosion the lesson is clear - when social democrats offer only to mimic rightist populism, they get crushed. Only a real Left anti-elitism of hope can appeal. Take note US Democrats and Starmer.

"...this War is far more important to Europe than it is to us — We have a big, beautiful Ocean as separation": perhaps the most telling sentence ever written by a US President. The post-war settlement is over. The new Orwellian tri-polar world of chaos is born. #Trump #Zelenskyy #Putin #Ukraine

Orwell's 1984 is perhaps the greatest work of political fiction ever written. Except it isn't fiction. His vision of a world split between 3 competing super-states - Oceania, Eurasia and Eastasia - is closer to realisation than ever before. This is the Trump-Putin-Xi vision for the world.

What makes Starmer think UK tax-payers are willing to fund the kind of military expenditure required to make Europe self-sufficient? The econ nationalism that produced Trump exists also in Europe. Starmer's "boots on the ground" is the stuff of post-WWII fairy-tales of a world that no longer exists.

Valentine's Day 2025 should be remembered as the day the post-war US-Europe alliance ended. The Trumpian assault on the international rules-based order & value system that has bound Europe with N American since 1945 is now entering its most intense phase. Buckle up. #Ukraine #Vance #Trump #Putin

According to our wonderful, evidence-based media (who definitely aren't a mouthpiece for the ruling class) this wicked, evil man represented a grave threat to national security & the economic well-being of us all. I'm so glad we have Keir Starmer in charge now instead who is genuinely a PM for all.
