It was an absolute joy to talk #twinpeaks with Abby and Josh, not least of all because we got to encourage Josh as he’s deep in the throes of season two.

NEW EPISODE: Will Kirstie (@kirstenhoward.bsky.social) appreciate American political satire? Will Joe (@joewriteswords) relax and just enjoy a dumb murder movie? Find out, when they review... THE FOREVER PURGE #thepurge podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/t...

Ah geez, if you non-Michganders think Holland is weird, wait 'til you hear about Frankenmuth. youtu.be/IJm3LHoqdA4?...

#jamesbond is about a tool of the British empire who kills in defense of nationalist/capitalist interests and also sells luxury products. Also, it was one of the last big franchises to avoid the IP-slop machine. I try to sort through it for @denofgeek.bsky.social: www.denofgeek.com/movies/james...

Somehow, I’ve never caught that Dougie Jones goes to see Dr. Phlox. No wonder Janey-E was all worked up. She was just in the decontamination chamber.

For @denofgeek.bsky.social, I wrote a bit about the end of Tom King's #jennysparks and the way it deals with power and tragedy: www.denofgeek.com/comics/jenny...

Feels weird cheering for Tkachuks, but here we are.

I've really enjoyed #yourfriendlyneighborhoodspiderman... but that last reveal had me groaning, thinking about some very bad comic books and movies, which I wrote about for @denofgeek.bsky.social: www.denofgeek.com/tv/your-frie...

Adorno got it right in 1945

When my dissertation director gave me kudos for writing a streamlined explanation of Heidegger's concept of authenticity ten years ago, I didn't realize those same skills would come in handy when summarizing X-Men comic book plots for explainer articles.

Rewatching Twin Peaks: The Return in whole for the first time since the original airing. It's amazing much funnier it is this time around -- once you get the rhythm (and once you stop wishing for Cooper to return) you can enjoy it for what it is.

Some good news from Pastor @jrforasteros.com! “But God is more than just not anti-queer. God is not neutral towards queer persons. God loves queer people, and indeed God is queer.” open.substack.com/pub/jrforast...

While waiting on a proper/affordable bluray, this is a pretty good pickup:

As the one person who’s written the only TV episode of Star Trek that depicts the Kobayashi Maru simulation, I guess that makes me somewhat of an authority on the subject. I can confidently say it’s almost never used correctly by political figures as a metaphor… or it profoundly misses the point.

INCREDIBLE mini-grant news! Thanks to the generosity of @iamdavidbrothers.com, we will have TWO more mini-grants to award for this year's Comics Criticism Mini-Grant!! Make sure to get your applications in by the end of the month: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

The inclusion of Dennis Dunphy in #captainamerica Brave New World gave me the opportunity to sing the Ballad of the D-Man for @denofgeek.bsky.social, and talk about the importance of superheroes who are absolute losers: www.denofgeek.com/movies/capta... #demolitionman

Also in comics criticism, I wrote a bit about #absolutebatman and its take on the bat-signal, a defiant statement against the rich people running Gotham. For @denofgeek.bsky.social: www.denofgeek.com/comics/absol...

Need to catch up on some Sam Wilson comics before watching #captainamerica New World Order? Check out my list for Men's Health Magazine: www.menshealth.com/entertainmen...

#captainamerica Brave New World actually manages to be a solid low-rent actioner, enhanced by an outstanding performance by Carl Lumbly, until the weight of blockbuster movies crashes the third act. My review for @denofgeek.bsky.social www.denofgeek.com/movies/capta...

I got to talk about some of my all-time favorite #superman comics over at @denofgeek.bsky.social. I'm a little bummed that I couldn't get some Jurgens Triangle-Era stuff or any Legion of Super-Heroes on there, but I'm really pleased with how this came out: www.denofgeek.com/comics/the-c...

Five bucks seems like A LOT for “Code of Honor” on VHS.

When I asked Anthony Mackie about his #avengers, I was not expecting him to pitch an all-new, all-different Cap's Kooky Quartet. Read my #captainamerica interview for @denofgeek.bsky.social: www.denofgeek.com/movies/capta...

Well, Heart Eyes is a delight.

I really liked #oneofthemdays, not just because it was nice to see a good comedy in theaters again, but also because it was nice to see an explicitly working-class comedy on screens. So I wrote about that in @theprogressivemag.bsky.social: progressive.org/latest/one-o...

The more I see the Mickey 17 trailer, the more I would like to see Robert Pattinson play Jamie Madrox in an adaptation of PAD and Larry Stroman’s X-Factor.

Here's the Things

I got to spend a good chunk of my morning breaking down the #fantasticfour trailer for @denofgeek.bsky.social, which was a lovely way to start the day: www.denofgeek.com/movies/fanta...

Over at @denofgeek.bsky.social, I ranked the main #startrek captains: www.denofgeek.com/tv/star-trek...

I got to visit @noelmanning.bsky.social and Meet Me at the Movies to discuss #twinpeaks #mulhollanddrive and other works of #davidlynch: www.youtube.com/watch?v=72Nd...

For @reactorsff.bsky.social, I wrote about the virtues of corny #startrek and its necessary utopian vision: reactormag.com/we-need-corn...

I'm not sure if it's made worse by coming right before the finale, but "Miss Twin Peaks" is, far and away, the worst episode of the show. I'll take an hour of Josie drawer knobs or Evelyn complimenting James's face before watching that umbrella dance number again.

Love getting messages from my kid’s school about how they’re preparing for ICE inspections. People who said I was overreacting for calling Republicans Nazis when they were paraphrasing Carl Schmitt: am I overreacting now?

This is a great point, and kinda makes me even more impressed that Strange New Worlds gets weird fairy tale and screwball Spock episodes in during its short seasons.

Tomorrow at 1pm, my fellow @ncfilmcritics.bsky.social members Thomas Manning (@thethomasmanning.bsky.social) and Manning Franks will be hosting a panel at the Pixel Pig Expo about getting started in film criticism. Come join us! www.artsdavidsoncounty.org/events/pixel...

I'm deep into the low points of season two in my #twinpeaks rewatch, and I'm relieved to remember that even the worst episodes have some good things in them: Denise and Dick Tremayne, Ed and Norma's "a week of Mondays" confession (and I like super-Nadine in general), and of course Gordon Cole.

We all know what happens when Captain America throws his mighty shield, but what about when Captain America steals a car from Ned Beatty? That's what @joewriteswords.bsky.social and @kirstenhoward.bsky.social ponder as they watch 1990's #captainamerica: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/t...

Instead of watching the bad #startrek movie, let's think about the one time that #section31 worked, when it was introduced in #deepspacenine as something to reject, or so I wrote at @denofgeek.bsky.social: www.denofgeek.com/tv/star-trek...

I know I mostly talk about Star Trek here, but if you’re looking for some fine #starwars accessories, check out this webstore: www.etsy.com/shop/3dimens...
