This is awful news and a PO who has worked at NSF for years.

No reason this can't happen everywhere

Please let the GEO/EAR community know: Program Directors and Mission Support who’ve been at NSF under two years were just terminated via Zoom. Even those of us whose offer letter stated one probationary year and whose government data states “permanent”.

This is an attack on US science. NSF staff provide critical support for scientific infrastructure and global excellence. These are valuable dedicated public servants. Please contact your reps, write letters, make noise! Are there any plans for rallies at NSF headquarters? Journalists: COVER THIS!

Firings happening right now at the NSF.

Happy #BlackHistoryMonth! Dr Jessie Isabelle Price (1930-2015) was a veterinary microbiologist who worked for Cornell University and the USGS to develop vaccines for avian diseases and studied environmental impact on diseases in water fowl. #Avian #Science #USGS @birdsoftheworld.bsky.social

ah cool, an archive of all CDC data before they tampered with it

Folks wanting updates from NSF, they just posted this: new.nsf.gov/executive-or... Stop work order for "conferences, trainings, workshops, considerations for staffing and participant selection, and any other grant activity that uses or promotes the use of DEIA principles and frameworks..."

Wild birds, mainly Ross’s and snow geese, are dying by the thousands in Idaho, USA, from highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1. Clinical signs include coughing, lethargy, and gasping for air. Despite this virus epidemic, waterfowl hunting is still permitted. www.idahostatesman.com/outdoors/art...

Grateful that @nytimes.com @emilyanthes.bsky.social covered H5N1 impacts on wild birds H5N1 isn't going away “We should take this lull as just that — a potentially normal part of this process — but really be prepared for these viruses to burn through animals again” www.nytimes.com/2024/12/13/s...

The devastating toll of H5N1 on wild birds is hard to fathom, and sadly, they're not alone. Honoured to contribute to this @nytimes.com story alongside colleagues* working to understand this crisis. www.nytimes.com/2024/12/13/s... * @duckswabber.bsky.social @johannaharvey.bsky.social

I am rotating off the SSE-DC committee after serving for 3 years. If you want to improve and make a positive impact for the society and field I recommend applying! Such a rewarding experience! Dec 15 is the deadline to apply

Great to see the first results from the Australis expedition to survey Antarctica for HPAI. Ten sites visited, HPAI detected in Skuas at 4, including at a skua breeding colony. One sheathbill also positive. 👉https://www.nature.com/articles/s41564-024-01868-7

A cool new paper delves into possible mechanisms of migratory culling (where infected individuals have lower migration success). The % malaria-infected birds blown off course and predated by falcons in the Canaries was higher than in birds departing Spain for Africa. www.cell.com/iscience/ful...

Highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N1 detected in Hawaii. Although it was present in the USA since 2021 and subsequently spread across the Americas, it is the first time it has been detected in the Hawaiian Archipelago, 3,200 km southwest of mainland USA. health.hawaii.gov/news/newsroo...
