Organizing with leftists is exactly like the scene in Monty Python’s Life Of Brian where Brian mistakes The Judean Peoples’ Front for The People’s Front of Judeah, and they’re so disgusted with the mistake it ends the meeting

Michelle Trachtenberg and I were supposed to meet in the nursing home, I was going to say “you were great in Pete & Pete”, my inner 11-year-old and I are _feeling> this one

I like to watch an episode of something marvel before severance, like eating a bag of Cheetos before going to a gourmet restaurant

I see a lot of “AI is replacing engineers” hype, but the one company that actually tried replacing me with an LLM lost so many clients they went bankrupt in less than a year.

I used up all my social capital warning people about Trump the first time. I’m so isolated and burned out now, the only goal I hope for is survival. Idk why I bother with vulnerability on the open internet; it requires empathy and/or intelligence to respond well. Litmus test, maybe.

LLMs are a great tool, it’s like if I had a shovel that hit **just** to the left or right of where I was aiming, and sometimes shoveled some dirt on the third or fourth try!

Worried about losing access to US federal data that may go off-line, or already is? You’re not alone—but duplication isn’t the answer. Many ongoing efforts have already archived key datasets and many more are ongoing. Check out these existing resources and, if you can, support their work. 🧵

I grew up around airplanes. My dad flew us to family gatherings in his Beech Baron. I landed my first touch-and-go in a Cessna 152 at the age of 17. Over decades of flights, I never felt safer than when in the hands of air traffic control. I wonder if tomorrow I’ll finally stop crying.

In retrospect, the least realistic part of Tomorrow Never Dies was the part where intelligence agencies like MI6 and the CIA would be directed to **oppose** global chaos, rather than architect, engineer, and implement it themselves.

Social media peaked at xanga

Any other LA fire evacuees trying to work from a hotel room today? I feel like I’ve forgotten how to think

A show like hot ones but instead of eating hot wings you watch the first ten minutes of up and if you don’t cry you go to jail

Had a manager last year who’d been a college athlete and so always referred to code sprints in terms of weightlifting. Finishing tickets was “getting reps.” Ticket estimation was “big lift? Small lift?” Today at diff company I nearly referred to an item that will take a lot of planning as “leg day.”

Pretty sure the cruelest onboarding assignment possible is “fix broken tests”

oh, you gave my iMessage a thumbs up? so you hate me?

Again reminded I am incredibly lucky to get to write Rust for my actual work. After years of managing Java and Python APIs it feels like winning the software engineer lottery. Low overhead binaries go brrrrr. (don’t ask me about compile times)

Forcing everyone to see fireworks every time someone gives two thumbs up is apple’s war on introverts

As someone who grew up online, it does depress me to see how many people genuinely can’t fathom why someone would want to be on social media beyond reasons linked to building clout so you can make money. It’s fun to talk to interesting people from around the world. That’s always been my reason.

Yeah, leetcode is worthless. Akin to interviewing a civil engineer by presenting them with popsicle sticks and telling them to build a bridge. It insults both parties and accomplishes nothing. Because it’s a video game, that children can learn and master.

The CEO at my new company is such a cool and humble guy. he contributes to open source so prolifically, he has code in one of the dependencies I chose for our project, and *didn’t even say anything* until I saw the code & DM’d him to ask about it. Then he was like “oh it was just a few lines” lol

I have 895 followers here on no posts and feel obligated to use my first post to say I am definitely the quake guy, you are not here by mistake, I am not just a regular person with a Michael Bolton name, I am the famous John Carmack, with a different face for some reason
