This is a great explainer for how efforts to automate fraud detection will inevitably lead to lots of innocent people being accused. We know this, because it happens again and again.

"Bloated” payrolls aren’t what is driving federal spending and deficits, as @johncassidysays.bsky.social makes clear: www.newyorker.com/news/the-fin...

"A 25 percent tariff would add almost $12,000 to the average price of a car coming from Canada, Mr. Roberts estimated, and $10,000 to the average price of a car imported from Mexico."

Rieckhoff: And what I would tell folks is: if they treat veterans like this, if they treat retired generals like this, how do you think they're going to treat everyone else? How do you think they're going to treat you? We are just first.

Missed this yesterday. 19 Democrats (including Chuck Schumer.....) joined Republicans in voting to repeal a Biden rule requiring cryptocurrency brokers to adhere to the same tax reporting rules as stock brokers. A yes vote is a pro-fraud, pro-tax-evasion vote here. www.senate.gov/legislative/...

"But what’s happening in the US right now is some sort of weird hybrid of the kind of power grabs we’ve seen in the tech industry, combined with a more traditional collapse of democratic institutions"-- Techdirt's @mmasnick.bsky.social www.techdirt.com/2025/03/04/w...

Alina Habbard posted: NOTHING CAN STOP THIS MAN FROM FIGHTING FOR HIS COUNTRY. David Simon had a succinct 2-word response: “Bone spurs.”

“Nero’s court”—damn, why didn’t I think of that?

At 5:4, a "nearest run thing" (Duke of Wellington), but welcome nonetheless. With Capitol Hill under MAGA control, the courts and the financial markets were always going to be key factors in Trump 2.0. Only the beginning, of course.

Look on the bright side.

Tweet gets action! 🤣😂

This should reassure the markets.

Trump hails a sudden fall in long term interest rates caused by fears that he’s in the process of tanking the economy and the Fed will have to cut short rates.

We interrupt his program to bring you a newsbreak from that lefty rag The Wall Street Journal.

Don’t worry about egg prices. Be grateful for the restoration of Mount McKinley.

If the Dems had half a clue they'd put up a big stock market ticker somewhere near the White House.

Pursuing economic autarky, targeting immigrants, andbanning protests. Wonder where he got these ideas from?

The 25% tariffs on Mexico/Canada are so self-defeating/likely to generate an adverse market reaction that I think even Trump will pretty quickly realize he's onto a loser & settle for another little bone from the USMCA partners. USMCA? The trade deal they signed with the 1ST TRUMP ADMINISTRATION.

Ok, but the entire point was that Trump cut Ukraine out of the negotiations and his minions met the Russians in Saudi Arabia. But that was a couple of weeks ago, so probably nobody remembers.

Tracking the performance of the S&P 500 through 100 days of an administration because I don't want to grade.

Doubtless the FBI's public corruption unit will be looking at this closely. Oh, wait a minute...

One of the most striking things about Trump and the people around him is that they seem to take US economic strength as a given, something they can use to bully others to submit to their will regardless of the tactics used. It's innately short term thinking.

Crash hats on.

???

Have we really become so angry and intolerant that we can’t even let the vice president enjoy some skiing in peace the day after he signed off on the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians?

Fed employees got another one of these at like 930 on a Friday. Fucking hell.

Trump is Trump. But what is the deal with Vance?

Great minds grovel alike.

Key points and statements from President Zelenskyy's interview to Fox News: ◾️Ukrainians want peace more than anyone. ◾️Ukrainians need peace through strength, with security guarantees, not just a ceasefire that Putin will violate like he already has done with numerous earlier ceasefires.

Trump is Trump. But what is the deal with Vance?

So much of Trumpism--the bluster, the demonization of immigrants, the attacks on the "deep state," the complaints about longtime allies cheating the US, and now this--is a symptom of insecurity and what Hofstadter called paranoia. To coin a phrase, "Sad."
