issue with “hire more conservative professors” is that they don’t mean “hire a smart guy who happens to think taxes should be lower”, they mean “hire a movement conservative”, and these days there are multiple litmus tests for being that type of person that are “insist this false thing is true”

hot damn lmao

How the fuck are they still doing this? We are at a point when in the same state as University of Austin the government is literally censoring certain words and ideas from the classroom & the federal government is going to try to do the same at a national level. Absolute disconnection from reality.

I’m a Democrat that grew up in farm country Kansas and has lived in rural red state communities ever since. I joined Twitter in ‘09 and stayed even after Musk bought it. I say all this to say hearing differences in opinion is old hat for me. The reason I left was because Musk pushed hostility.

It’s true—but simply by being black and ascending to the highest political office of a country half of whose population hated that fact so intensely that they made sure that the guy who incessantly demanded to see his birth certificate became his successor.

A famous Supreme Court lawyer declaring the 2024 election results to be constitutionally equivalent to a blanket “not guilty” verdict for Donald Trump is the kind of diseased lawyer-brain thinking I could not have parodied if I’d tried ballsandstrikes.org/legal-cultur...

BREAKING: House Speaker Mike Johnson announces that male Republicans neutered by Donald Trump may continue to use the men's bathrooms.

it’s not “retreating into a bubble” to want to see posts by people you like and want them to see yours

One thing I think people talking about the threat of authoritarian creep have gotten, if not exactly wrong, not quite right either is to frame discussion in terms of various European precedents. Those are relevant to be sure, but we also have an American precedent - namely the South before 1965.

One thing I look for in a social network is not to have the CEO shove his reactionary political views in my face every time I open the app. So I’m happy here.

So much has already been lost.

this gets to the point i keep making. to the media elites who are obsessed with anti-wokeness, something like mass deportation is a total abstraction whereas they are annoyed, on a daily basis, by their supposedly “woke” younger colleagues and social media antagonists

The biggest reason I left X was because it just wasn’t a product that appealed to me anymore because its owner pushed ads and changed the algorithm to highlight things I had no interest in. It isn’t because I needed a safe space away from interesting dialogue.

I can understand why the op-ed class doesn’t wants to write the columns that they always write about problems with Dem strategy even in the wake of clear evidence that global inflation was a very strong headwind. It’s not like you can do much about it.

Profile should show how many followers a person has as well as how many people have blocked them.

The problem as I see it about Democrat strategy requiring that we stop talking about racism and culture war issues is that it doesn’t wrestle with the fact that Trump said and did a ton of unpopular things and what people gathered from that was that his views were authentic and he could be trusted.

My three-year-old was reading the Atlantic when she turned to me gravely and asked “Daddy, why is America fascist now?” And when I told her “Because a trans person said Latinx at an Oberlin student Senate meeting,” she started crying.

How many Manosphere podcasters and YouTubers spend a lot of time in feminist or queer spaces? Conservative white Evangelicals with Jews, Muslims, atheists, etc.? And so on. These “echo chamber” and “bubble” accusations mostly go one way, and often amount to “you must spend your time listening to me”

This is awful, nobody should have to live with the shame of being jesse watters’ mother

In the process of using TweetDelete to finish off the process of migrating to Bluesky. I'd recommend starting the process now because it can take a bit to download your data and delete posts. I joined Twitter in 2009 so there's a lot I'm erasing.
