Whoever wins the April 28 election, the prime minister’s first international trip should be to Nuuk.

This might be a good time to pick up “A Nation’s Paper: The Globe and Mail in the Life of Canada,” published last year to mark the paper’s 180th year of publication. penguinrandomhouse.com/books/726367/a…

“What he wants is to see a total collapse of the Canadian economy, because that'll make it easier to annex us." This is the most extraordinary statement by a Canadian prime minister in the history of this country. The Trump administration is at war with Canada.

I was happy to contribute to The Hub’s postgame analysis of Pierre Poilievre’s Flag Day rally. To my eyes, the Conservative leader reclaimed control of the political narrative. Mark Carney won’t easily be able to take it away. thehub.ca/2025/02/17/a...

There had been nothing like this since the cabinet revolt against John Diefenbaker in 1963.

Have you read Empty Planet: The Shock of Global Population Decline (2019) by @johnibbitson.bsky.social & Darrell Bricker? I have. Here’s a bit of an epilogue that appeared on TVOs The Agenda today (12/11/24):

Thanks. Yeah, it is tough.

Does the world face a fertility crisis? Journalist @johnibbitson.bsky.social and pollster Darrell Bricker join @spaikin.bsky.social for a conversation on why global population rates are on the decline. Watch tonight at 8/11pm.

Darrell Bricker and I are on TVO’s The Agenda tonight at 8 ET to talk about the implications of collapsing fertility and population decline. Those implications are dire. Hope you can tune in.

Just finished @johnibbitson.bsky.social excellent book “The Duel;” really enjoyable and interesting, learned an awful lot, enjoyed every page; worth reading! Canada is, largely, the country it is thanks to these two leaders.

Interesting point.

I just don’t know what equivalent market we could export to.

Fair point if the US is truly determined to reshore regardless of cost.

And there’s Europe, though I don’t know much we have that they want.

Though I’m not convinced our internal market is large enough to suite existing economy.

If energy is exempt should we create a tariff of our own?

Bringing down internal tariffs would be a very good thing. It shouldn’t require the Calais US tariffs to encourage it.

A three-part proposal: 1) Read this well-argued piece by Rudyard Griffith and Sean Speer; 2) Assume their argument is correct; 3) Suggest how you think the federal government should respond. I’ll do my best to respond to questions and comments. thehub.ca/2024/11/30/r...

Every now and then you fall into a book and discover an old friend you never knew. This is Every Valley, Charles King’s wise and wonderful telling of the life and times of Handel’s Messiah. I will be happy for as long as it takes before I have to say goodbye.

What’s the point of eliminating the GST on Christmas trees starting on Dec 14? Most trees are up by then.

George Will, at his best, remains incomparable. In the Washington Post, he describes Matt Gaetz as “an arrested-development adolescent with the swagger of a sequined guitarist in a low-rent casino”
