I was tickled to spend 30 minutes today being interviewed by my friend Dwight Cadwell from WKLK/WMOZ radio in Cloquet. Our discussion will be part of the Coaches Corner show on Saturday morning. Dwight's the best.

Tim Gleason has stepped down after 19 years as head girls basketball coach at Winona High School (31 years on the staff). Gleason led the program to Class 3A state championship games in 2016 and 2017. He will continue in his roles as band director, track and field coach and all-around great guy.

The John's Journal Toyota Camry is visiting its friends at Maplewood Toyota today. Oil change, tire rotation, overall checkup and a much-needed shower, then ready for spring travel.

Finished the winter tournaments with one empty notebook page to spare. New notebook begins its duties tomorrow.

If anyone spots a mouse inside Williams Arena today (a wireless mouse), it's mine. Forgot it when I departed last night. A trip to Best Buy and 16 bucks later, John's Journal is back in business.

Final score Class 4A boys basketball state championship game at Williams Arena Wayzata 80 Cretin-Derham Hall 55

Wayzata taking control. Trojans lead Cretin-Derham Hall 66-46 with 6:29 left in the second half.

I'm not retiring until August, but today marks the end of my final winter season in my role with the MSHSL. I've been writing throughout the day, trying to paint a picture of what these events are like, and I'm at more 1,500 words. I'll plan to post a finished product tomorrow.

Halftime at Williams Arena in Class 4A boys basketball state championship game Wayzata 38 Cretin-Derham Hall 26

What a sight. The lower bowl at Williams Arena is about 95 percent full and the upper deck is filled with hoop heads.

The big band from Wayzata is playing a banger, Carry On My Wayward Son. For a fella from the 70s, that is solid listening. We're a few minutes from tipoff in the final game of the Minnesota high school basketball season: Wayzata vs. Cretin-Derham Hall for the 4A boys title.

Albany (32-0) is the first undefeated Minnesota high school boys basketball state champion since Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa finished 33-0 in Class 1A in 2012.

Final score in Class 2A boys basketball state championship game Albany 70 Waseca 63

Players being introduced now at Williams Arena before the Class 2A boys basketball state championship game. Albany (31-0) vs. Waseca (32-0).

Alexandria wins its first boys basketball state championship, defeating Mankato East 73-64.

Something's gotta give: Mankato East has won 28 games in a row and Alexandria is on a 24-game win streak. Alex in front 55-46 with 9:30 left.

We have apparently found a top-notch correspondent for consolation-round contests. Best of the best.

Very sizable crowd inside The Barn for this Class 3A state championship game between Mankato East and Alexandria. Alex in front 42-34 with 14:45 to play in second half.

Do the Dawson-Boyd Blackjacks have a world-class nickname and mascot? Hard to argue...

Great moment at Williams Arena during TV timeout: Members of the 1975 Chisholm state champions recognized as they mark 50 years since defeating St. Paul Mechanic Arts 41-33 in the Class A title game.

My top eight nicknames in the boys state basketball tournament: 1 Dawson-Boyd Blackjacks 2 Moorhead Spuds 3 Montevideo Thunder Hawks 4 Pequot Lakes Patriots 5 Byron Bears 6 Anoka Tornadoes 7 Duluth Denfeld Hunters 8 DeLaSalle Islanders

The last time Dawson-Boyd played in the boys state basketball tournament was in 1991. A junior on that team, Cory Larson, is now head coach of the Blackjacks in their return to the big show.

Quite the contest here in the first Class A boys basketball state semifinal at Williams Arena. Fourth-seeded Nevis leads top-seeded and defending champion Cherry 39-38 at halftime. Cherry shooting 55.2 percent, Nevis 51.5.

Postgame interviews at Target Center.

Gordy Kosfeld of KDHL radio in Faribault is a legendary broadcaster and I'm proud to call him a friend and goof around while he's live on the air from the boys state basketball tournament.

Alexandria defeats defending state champ Totino-Grace 73-65 in the Class 3A boys basketball state semifinals at Williams Arena. 3 seed Cardinals vs. 1 seed Mankato East for the championship at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The John's Journal Toyota Camry got a good parking spot inside Target Center today.

Demolition is progress.

Another outstanding band is putting on a great show before the next game of the Class A boys hoops state quarterfinals at Target Center. The Dawson-Boyd orchestra is top-notch.

Linda Olson has been keeping the scorebook for the Nevis basketball team for years and years. Coach Scott Kramer said, "She’s everybody’s mom, she’s everybody’s grandma, she's the city's mom, the city's grandma, the city's den mother."

My longtime friend Paul Raymo, sports director at KLQP radio in Madison/Dawson, bought me a pretzel and cheese here at Target Center in honor of my impending retirement. He is a first-ballot Hall of Fame human.

BOLD students looked the part today at state.

BOLD senior Jack Gross, the career scoring leader in school history, reached 2,000 points with a free throw in the Warriors' 89-57 loss to Cherry in the Class A state quarterfinals.
