A functional opposition party that doesn't suck up to the sultan's grand vizier as he goes on an unprecedented smash and grab rampage would be nice.

WE'RE THE BAD GUYS!

The way republicans walk around covered in pig shit nazi saluting each other while dems observe 1980s Ronald Reagan Tip O'Neill decorum cannot stand.

another thing every other president in history would be impeached for just happened

Can't have zero-sum politics in a democracy. All must be invested as stakeholders and believe they can enact the changes within that they want and have strong minority rights when they can't. Without the core democratic idea of working within a rules-based system, a despot will inevitably reign.

It’s sort of his schtick. He falsely accuses others of whatever he’s doing or plans to do so that people are inured to the accusation when it’s accurately leveled back at him.

At this point I'd settle for the guy who stands on the chariot next to the triumphing general in Rome and whispers "you are not a god."

The past ten years has just been the same clutch of morons and apologists insisting that Trump would never cross that line and then shuffling along with him to insist that he would never cross that next one.

This is the really crazy thing. All Trump really had to do to remain popular given the status quo when he took office was…. Nothing. Maybe trim a little fat, put out some endzone dance press releases, go play golf.

He's someone who would love to disappear people and now he'll probably get his chance, all rubber-stamped of course by the United States Senate.

That AG would have been much better than Merrick Garland.

It's amazing that Trump can topple constitutional governance in a month and no former president speaks out even a peep. It's like when they finish out their term in office they ascend to a higher plane where things on lowly earth cease to matter.

No one has ever lost money betting that Trump will in fact do that next insane crazy evil thing. "He'll never nominate Kash Patel..." "He won't surrender Ukraine to Russia..." "He's not gonna do the tariffs..." "He's not gonna let Elon take over..." "He'll accept the results of the election..."

This is why I really have no time for the "behind the scenes, Republicans say yadda yadda yadda." This is a public-facing business. If you tell a reporter you don't want to vote "aye" then you vote "aye," who cares?

Our last chance to bounce back from this in any meaningful sense was Jan 6 through the 21st 2021. When Trump was a free and healthy man on the end of business on the 21st of 2021 it was all over.

Your Caesars and Napoleons all had an element of world historical genius—Trump eats McDonald's and Oreos for breakfast and says "tremendous" a lot. His very existence is an insult.

nothing is a distraction. i don’t even know what that means anymore. neither do you. stop whining about people not paying attention to your boring-ass press release and figure out a way to communicate effectively without insulting your audience.

Walter Lippmann had a great line about how the only animal that's been fooled more times than mice and rats in laboratory experiments is the hopeful citizen who lives in a democracy. After Trump won again I gave up thinking I know anything for sure about what the electorate wants.

The same ones who would write the op-ed in support of Trump's announcement that he's reinstating slavery. There is no bottom.

Just amazing racial politics here - if the Second Black Mayor of New York City were removed from office, his replacement would be the Third Black Mayor of New York City.

There's a lot of "who could have foreseen this!" inevitable outcome of the treasonous relationship between Putin and Trump which many mainstream voices have inexplicably spent years of their precious careers denying.

Trump skating by for Jan 6 broke the country in such a way that people like Elon are convinced they can create unprecedented mayhem toppling the federal government and never face any sort of penalty (criminally—even socially!) for the rest of their lives.

my god

I hate that this is right, but it is. Europeans would be very foolish to think they can wait 4 years and NATO will snap back. -4 years is a long time -US unlikely to have free & fair elections -Even if it does, Dems might lose -Even if they win, US could be 4 years away from being anti-NATO again

In my head what I keep returning to is Thomas Payne's line about summer soldiers and sunshine patriots. It's easy to pay lip service toward freedom when times are good, but now when they're needed most, we're seeing how few determined true believers there really are in public life.
