🎉microPublications EEB is looking for new editors! -Editorial load is extremely light (but we work quickly) -Awesome format and journal, serves the EEB community well IMO -We cover all of EEB so we're looking for breath/generalists/complimentary expertise -DM me if interested (or suggest someone)!

Good to see an #herbarium study from @newphyt.bsky.social featured on NPR, with an assessment of what we stand to lose when herbaria are closed. nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1... www.kcur.org/news/2025-02... Includes quotes from @barbarathiers.bsky.social, Jordan Teischer, Lynn Clark.

Just extended the deadline to March 21 for this position in the Plant Phylogenomics group at the University of Vienna. It is sort of a "post doc plus" position funded for up to six years. Please reach out if you want to chat - I'd love to talk to you about it! jobs.univie.ac.at/job/Universi...

Come to Purdue this summer to get experience in Plant Data Science!!

I found this piece that explains so clearly the origin of the confusion between #sweetpotatoes and #yams - different species, and even different plant families. www.marthastewart.com/8169219/yams...

New preprint characterizing diverse hybrid dysfunction phenotypes (sperm, gonads, copulatory structures) despite no detectable pre-zygotic isolation, work led by students Maia Dall'Acqua and Amanda Peak (now with @johnstinchcombe.bsky.social ) #celegans www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

KU Center for Genomics is hiring a postdoctoral fellow! Choose a mentor among the Center's faculty and propose an original project. Two years funding and generous research budget included. Please share, retweet and apply! genomics.ku.edu/ku-center-geno…

Aye-ayes are clearly unusual, but @glom.bsky.social @3rdreviewer.bsky.social &co show that they also have an unusual pattern of #MutationBias; older females transmit more mutations than males. This is a first for mammals, raising questions about other #lemurs 🧪 @plosbiology.org plos.io/40SR4kj

This is the most relevant article to NIH and research cuts I’ve seen. Imagine if this was today , how many people would be saying “Why are we studying Gila Monsters and their impact on diabetes ? That’s wasted money !” globalnews.ca/news/9793403...

#Nitrogen: A double-edged sword in agriculture. Nitrogen fertilisers have transformed #foodproduction, but improper use is harming #soil, #water, #air, #biodiversity & #humanhealth. #ReduceNWaste www.fao.org/newsroom/det...

Where the hell is the legal opposition to Trump & Elon? Unionized government employees have contracts that have been collectively bargained. Congressionally established & funded agencies can't be disbanded b/c a tech bro doesn't like them. Tax & SS numbers have strong legal privacy protections.

"Many Americans Say the Democratic Party Does Not Share Their Priorities" Beyond trying to stop Trump's most damaging ideas-- a herculean task in itself-- the Democratic opposition also needs to provide a message that better resonates with more voters. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/02/u...

I caught him live last night. Trudeau's speech is worth watching on both sides of the border

Happy birthday to us! 🥳 Promoting plant science since 1902. nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/1469...

Happened to me as well. @britishecolsoc.bsky.social ... Free access for $12 to $49 per article!

My personal view is that, whether it was or was not a Nazi salute, the guy's still a prick.

Looking for a place to conduct your research? 100 years of place-based data & information, fellowships to help support researchers & grad students, fully funded summer camp for your kids (if you have 'em). Apply today! We are actively recruiting new research teams. Join our incredible community.

My @torontostar.bsky.social column this week: a City Hall-commissioned survey found that half of residents think Toronto is getting worse. Not great! I asked Mayor Olivia Chow what she can do to change that. Her 2025 budget is an opportunity to turn things around. www.thestar.com/opinion/cont...

Last chance to apply for an Associate Professor position in our Plant Biology Department at SLU. Deadline Jan 20th. Come join us in Uppsala, Sweden!

Do you teach field-based courses? Or hope to? Wrote a brief commentary for the new Plant Science Bulletin on why these course need to be offered/supported. TL;DR the kids need to get outside... where integrative biology lives. #SICB2025 #STEMeducation digitalcommons.bucknell.edu/fac_journ/21...

Review of applications for the next director of the Kellogg Biological Station begins in just a few weeks (January 21st)! Please consider applying and share widely! careers.msu.edu/jobs/institu...

It feels surreal to see my PhD research featured on the cover of Science www.science.org/doi/10.1126/.... Incredibly proud of the work that went into this. And so grateful for the opportunities, resources, support and mentorship from co-authors and my whole scientific community that made it possible

Late-breaking job ad: The Department of Plant and Microbial Biology at North Carolina State University (Raleigh, NC, USA) is hiring a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Plant Evolutionary Biology!!! More details below. Please repost!

Orrin Pilkey as passed. A hero who gave a crystal-clear answer on how to negotiate the balance of science and advocacy. This @nytimes.com obit shows his deep impact on coastal geology science and policy in an arena with multi-billion dollar stakes. www.nytimes.com/2024/12/16/s...

We're hiring a tenure-track Assistant Professor in undergraduate biology teaching! Come work at the University of Guelph and join an awesome department with a great and large cohort of new faculty!

New work from Julia Boyle-- a recently minted PhD, coadvised with @mfrederickson.bsky.social -- on the interaction between rhizobia and soil microbiomes for legumes! This was a fun project involving multiple undergrad researchers, and using our field station's terrestrial climate warming arrays.

A really exciting new study: evidence that males evolve better sight in order to detect female dishonesty in dance flies. One for the textbooks! A male resistance trait! Great one from @rosalindmurray @luc_bussiere @dtgwynne & team academic.oup.com/evolut/advan...

My postdoc work on phylogenomics of Rumex is out ahead of print in Evolution Letters! academic.oup.com/evlett/advan...
