Cooking up some dinner and blasting Drew Martin on the stereo. Drew is my favorite picker/singer west of the Mississippi. Check him out if you haven’t already. ✌️

Breakfast with the Beatles.

Been chasing this record for years. I could’ve bought it on discogs but something never felt right about that to me and the OGs are so expensive. When Third Man announced the reissue I instantly jumped on it. One of my favorite singer/songwriter albums of all time.

Here an unreleased track of mine on the Black River now available in the WXNA archives. Currently unavailable anywhere else!

I self released this tape 3 years ago. My love letter to our home in the Lummi Nation and surrounding area. Still have 2nd batch tapes available. Also on Bandcamp and all major stealing platforms.

Had a great time working door/collecting tickets at Arcadian Public House (FKA Conway Muse) tonight. Chatting with other musicians, connecting with locals. Drawing in my notebook when slow. Volunteer/give back to your scene when possible. Feels good. Will do again.

Nobody asked but I’ve two albums worth of songs recorded and looking for a home. 🏡

Wife out of town this week so I binged all of Band of Brothers. Then attempted to follow up with the Pacific but holy shit this show is terrible. Or maybe BoB was just too good? 🤷‍♂️

Heavy rotation this month. Great album with great artwork made by great people.

A lot of news around the WA state flag redesign lately. Which I’m all for it, our flag sucks. But also…is this really something we need to spend time and resources on right now? *broadly gestures at the world* 🌍

I still don’t fully understand this app. Probably cause I was never a Twitter user. Trying to promote my silly little songs on social media sucks. Anyways, here’s a pic of my dogs.

The March 7th show in Conway is coming up quick. Get your tickets here if you are interested conwaymuse.com/event/john-s...

I always try to shop local when I can, but I bought this record on Discogs out of spite to prove a point to a local shop owner who is for lack of a better description “out of their fucking mind”. But that’s not a story that’s fit to print. Anyways this is a fantastic collection of material.

Went to my first open mic in years last night. There’s something kind of liberating in showing up to a new place with only an acoustic guitar and picking on some songs for strangers you may never see again. Was also nice to just see folks having fun playing their tunes with no real agenda.

Round 2 of flyer posting. Still humbling. Very worth it. Go outside. Talk to people.

Who is your favorite blues musician? My answer changes almost daily but tonight I’m enjoying some Blind Willie McTell on the stereo.

If music is therapy, who’s your therapist?

Going out into the world and asking strangers if you can post a flyer for your show is such a humbling experience. Every musician should do this.

Been revisiting this folk masterpiece a lot lately. No notes. Just perfect from start to finish.

Pulled on to Aurora Ave in Seattle and Neil Young’s “The Needle and the Damage Done” came on the radio. Name a better soundtrack for that street. You can’t.

Next month at the Arcadian Public House (formerly the Conway Muse) Folk Music for the Senses and Other Nonsense. I’ll be opening for two of my favorite local artists/bands Devin Champlin and Sunflecks. Friday March 7 doors 7:30 show 8pm. $12 ADV / $15 DOS. Hope to see you there ✌️

Added this collection of outtakes to streaming. I’ve been told it just hit Spotify. Check it out if you feel so inclined.

This might be my favorite album of theirs. Coming off the fame of Seven Nation Army with such a strange album full of marimba and piano. Baller move.

Friday night jams on the tape deck. Down in Pancake Valley by The Sons of Rainier. I’m definitely in some kind of mood lately…

New one from Sean Curtis Patrick is really hitting the spot this morning. If you like long form ambient/drone about old ships this one’s for you.

This song broke me last night.

Devin Champlin live in Conway. Good times 🤙

The only thing better than booking a gig yourself is when someone else asks you to play a show. Now that’s what I call validation.

Photographic evidence my style and vibe has changed very little over the years.

My recording from Bellingham Folk Fest is up on Bandcamp. Free/pay what you want. I never play a song the same way twice and I enjoy hearing how they change over time.

There’s something about how mono records sound I love so much. Dylan here especially sounds great in mono.

Had an amazing time bringing some exploratory guitar music to Bellingham folk fest last night. It’s great to see what is largely a traditional scene start to embrace the outsider artists a bit more.

Mixed feelings of imposter syndrome and extreme validation after being booked for this years Bellingham Folk Festival. This showcase is sure going to shake things up a bit from the rest of the traditional music. Let’s get weird. ✌️

Now playing: I really like this collaboration between @themodernfolk.bsky.social and @johnswanke.bsky.social - lofi longform ambient folk guitar/synth improvisations teetering just on the right side of falling apart. Music you can get lost in. themodernfolk.bandcamp.com/album/moss-s...

Feeling some stress from yesterday? Space out with Sunday's episode of the Black River, available now at www.wxnafm.org/playlists/?i.... Featuring Don Bikoff, SUSS, @johnswanke.bsky.social, new Blue Lake, new @darrencross.bsky.social, Laurel Premo, @billdmackay.bsky.social, and more.

Enjoy this sneak peek at the visuals that I’ll be projecting during my set at Bellingham Folk Fest. Thursday 1/23 8pm at the Honey Moon.

Here’s some downloads to my special tape only release “Horizon Lines”. Originally only on cassette I gave away ten copies at a recent show. Maybe an official release later this year. Check it out. ✌️

I want to start a weirdo post-rock group called Thom Yorke’s Normal Eye

My collaborative effort from 2023 with @themodernfolk.bsky.social is now streaming. Josh provided the synth/drone tones and I improvised acoustic and electric guitar over the two tracks. Austin Herrmann provided the art work. Check it out ✌️
