I hate that I felt compelled to double check to see if this was a joke about crazy things that sound true these days... or a true thing that should sound too crazy to be true. Should sound too crazy, but somehow completely plausible these days. Also true: www.nytimes.com/2025/06/01/u...

I've become a bit of a connoisseur of the "both sides" obituary of American fascists...like this April 1976 one for Gerald LK Smith. Some say he was a fiery anticommunist Christian Patriot, his enemies say he was a fascist. [To be clear, Gerald LK Smith was indeed a fascist.]

I feel like we don't talk enough about the fact that there was a Republican Vice President a heartbeat away from the Presidency for 4 years (1969-1973) who was such a raving antisemite that he got kudos from the leading neo-Nazis and Holocaust-deniers of his day. Article is from August of 1976.

I think it's time to retire the expression "leader of the free world"

I'm concerned that this doesn't seem to actually expand facilities / beds to meet the need. It just seems to clear out some space in the currently overwhelmed existing ones. We might see some helpful first steps on reforms... but I worry about the possibility of more "dumping" of the vulnerable.

In 2011, Robert Mueller gave a speech saying that transnational organized crime had infiltrated Western institutions and was a severe threat to democracy. He warned that people make facile comparisons to "The Sopranos" to mask the sophistication of the threat.

In 1939, "America First" leader Charles Lindbergh wrote a piece for Readers Digest in which he claimed that airplanes were a technology created by and for white people so they could rule the globe.

Department of Homeland Security officers invading a congressman's offices and arresting a staffer who tried to stop them is very, very bad. gothamist.com/news/homelan...

For an administration that pretends to care about antisemitism, the Trump regime sure does seem to have a lot of neo-Nazis in it!

@bdaviess.bsky.social and I cited this as part of our paper on Chinese immigration exclusion. Anti-Chinese politicians said extremist laws targeting Chinese people were the only way to prevent unlawful extremist violence targeting Chinese people. www.middlebury.edu/institute/ac...

remigration is neo-nazi speak for ethnic cleansing. wrote a whole story about the origins of the word here: www.huffpost.com/entry/trump-...

Been trying to pop onto Threads more to see what's up and I've just encountered a strong contender for Wrongest Paragraph Ever Written.

Secretary Rubio (likely w/ help of extremist Darren Beattie: wiczipedia.substack.com/p/the-extrem...) just issued visa guidance that would bar foreign officials from visiting the US if they: -enforce social media regulation that their governments passed -talk about enforcing that regulation 1/

Why does President Trump perceive Harvard as his enemy? Doesn’t he know it’s a place where racist narcissists can receive tenure in the psychology department? by Stephen Pinker

As for many other things there is a German word for this, which is Führerprinzip.

incredible lack of self-awareness from Pinker here
