My dad is still with us thankfully, but he's on Google Street View too and it always stirs lots of emotions in me more than other photos do for some reason.

It’s interesting seeing how an AI interprets photos that don’t really have a subject matter. It suggested there might have been a Roe Deer in these photos of snowdrops. It did make me look again in case there had been and I missed them.

A blue sky and yellow daffodils on an embankment at Lochwinnoch station. Almost spring-like.

Good morning, how are you? It’s a bit windy isn’t it? I’m just crossing over this path into the loch. Have a good day. #BirdingScotland

Several dead birds spotted at Lochwinnoch this morning, all victims of bird flu.

I don't think the trailer for Civil War does it justice, as it's an excellent film. However, I'm starting to think it's actually a documentary. www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDyQ...

Football manager "breaks silence" on issue by basically saying "no comment" several times. Talk about clickbait. www.glasgowtimes.co.uk/sport/249506...

No alt text on the image but it's a great wee cartoon from Private Eye. It shows a scene next to a British Antarctic Survey station with a researcher standing on the snow holding a clipboard while an Adelie penguin says to them "I'm a bit busy, but go on..."

I've always wanted to visit Switzerland and thought about doing so by train. So it sounds great that direct service from London to Germany and Switzerland are possibilities. www.theguardian.com/business/202...

Dear podcasters and interviewers, it's a bit self-indulgent to have a four to six hour long interview with someone. Employ an editor.

It's infuriating. I'm reading the words but I'm just not taking them in. I think it's time for a night off from study and just watch a film or something.

Happy Publication Day to me! 🎉😱🥹🧿 Between Two Rivers: Ancient Mesopotamia and the Birth of History is officially out! It’s a history of the region through objects found in an ancient museum in Princess Ennigaldi-Nanna’s palace, and I hope you all like it 💛 lnk.to/BetweenTwoRi...

It's probably about time that the media stopped reporting on what Liz Truss says.

Dear The Guardian writers, when you're putting together these 'where to start' guides for newbies to novelists, it would be helpful to put the name of the book under each entry. www.theguardian.com/books/2025/f...

Hey, we're up to more than 10 hours of daylight again. Last time that happened was 20 October. And I've seen more flowering daffodils today. Spring is definitely on its way. Just think some people might be seeing and hearing some Chiffchaffs and Willow Warblers within four weeks.

There's a lot of truth in this article, but this in particular: 'Great food can be found in the scuzziest of places.'

There’s a kind of mythology that has developed about California but this gallery of photos by Hugh Holland shows the reality behind the myths. www.theguardian.com/artanddesign...

I'm currently watching a talk by Prof Sarah Hart on the links between mathematics and literature. She is the author of the book Once Upon a Prime which looks fascinating. www.theguardian.com/books/2023/a...

Looking at a note of recent bird sightings in the Clyde area, you could copy and paste it every winter. One of them is a male Smew at Broadwood Loch, Cumbernauld. It's been going there for the last two years, but I think it might be the bird that used to visit Lochwinnoch. #BirdingScotland

Wouldn't you just love to be an archaeologist out looking for dinosaur bones? And finding out about ancient dinosaur civilisations? #TheLostKingdoms 🤣 thelostkingdoms.com/jurassic-pio...

The Open University’s Earth Science modules are excellent. When I did my degree I really appreciated how good the materials were. But one regret was never getting to do a mapping project which many undergraduates do at other universities. A symptom of distance learning unfortunately.

Tarantulas are big spiders and frogs can be really small. But there's a frog in this Natural World episode that shares a tarantula's burrow and it's only about as long as a quarter length of one of the spider's legs. archive.org/details/BBCN...

I can imagine many lives would have been saved, and fewer serious injuries occurred, because passengers were wearing their seat belts as the plane in Toronto rolled over. Billy Connolly once joked about the pointlessness of seat belts if you crashed into a mountain, but here they show their worth.

I always remember when one of the OU's geologists/planetary scientists' eyes would light up at the mere mention of Arthur Holmes. Good to learn that there's a book about Holmes and on how to date rocks and the Earth. www.waterstones.com/book/the-dat...

I read an article the other day about how we’ve lost ‘seriousness’ in society and then I saw this article this morning which is a perfect illustration. www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio...

I'm pretty sure I witnessed sublimation last night. It was snowing/sleeting down, but the surfaces weren't getting wet, so it feels like the snowflakes had sublimated directly to water vapour before touching down.

Writing a blog just now that will link to a US government website and wondering if the content on it has been hacked to pieces by the current mob and whether it's trustworthy.
