Let’s record some motor units

"Our quest for efficiency will not stop at the mass production of unread emails. I intend to mandate an endless variety of pointless, performative gruntwork that is somehow humiliating, even though it will never be witnessed by another human being."

📢 LAST WEEK TO APPLY FOR THIS! Don't miss out 👇👇👇

This was supposed to be a post about my lab's first funding of the year, a diversity supplement to fund our amazing research technician. The award never arrived. Now it's a post about the value of diversity and trying to persevere in these dark times. devinenilab.org/news/diversi...

In happier news, here a new motor learning paradigm and paper by Ali Ghavampour, @mnlmrc.bsky.social, @andpru.bsky.social, @jonathanamichaels.bsky.social, @jjodx.bsky.social. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

@tyrellturing.bsky.social laying down support for neural foundation models using tokenization 👀: "I think there are many practical applications for these models. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that there will be almost no practical applications of neural data until we build these models."

Foundational paper! "These properties accommodate variations in brain size across individuals and species to generate a fixed number of modules with a fixed set of periods, without requiring size-dependent biological parameter tuning." www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Advance voting is open now for Ontario. Ford doesn’t want you to vote, so go now.

Inspiring message from a Brazilian scientist: "The best “fuck you” to fascists? Thriving. Publish that paper. Build that collaboration. Laugh with labmates. Science outlives dictators" www.reddit.com/r/labrats/co...

If there are any glam journal editors out there with a sense of humor, may I recommend for your tombstone, “Editor Decision Started.”

Judge Reyes just became my favorite person.

Its not even an original monstrous thought, because that is just how awful RFK Jr is. In the 19th century, many asylums, epileptic colonies, and other institutional spaces had farms attached to them. To exploit disabled people's labor with the excuse that that labor would "cure" or "fix" them.

In the current political/social climate, my lab thought it was important to declare our shared values. Inspired by @jonathanamichaels.bsky.social recent lab values post, we have now created our own LAB ETHOS: compneurosci.com/wiki/index.p...

Do large language models develop "emergent" models of the world? My latest Substack posts explore this claim and more generally the nature of "world models": LLMs and World Models, Part 1: aiguide.substack.com/p/llms-and-w... LLMs and World Models, Part 2: aiguide.substack.com/p/llms-and-w...

Update: Grant submitted

Was just going to advertise another awesome summer course for people starting their labs: safelabs.info -- related to the one we are organizing compneurosci.com/Neuro4Pros/i... - if you have a new lab this is a good year.

Grant rejected!

This bathroom wall perfectly encapsulates how I’m feeling about the situation in the US. Stay strong US friends!

1. Today the NIH director issued a new directive slashing overhead rates to 15%. I want to provide some context on what that means and why it matters. grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

Found this gem of a comment in some old code

I highly recommend going to this

2029: The marmosets, not simply content with their Neuralink implants, continue to self-augment.

2031: Jürgen Schmidhuber receives a Nobel Prize in AI for the discovery of place cells in ChatGPT. He spends his acceptance speech talking about the 1980s.

2044: Now regarded as useless and harmful, the impact factor is abolished. When reached for comment, @mbeisen.bsky.social, now the supreme leader emeritus of eLife, simply responds “I told you so.”

2033: DEI is legal again, but it is now illegal to publish electrophysiological research without conforming to “The Manifold Hypothesis”
