Excellent work by an excellent theorist.

Thanks so much to @rebeccabuxton.bsky.social AshleyDodsworth+AliceBaderin 4 their responses yesterday to my methods book + TimFowler 4 organising + others for joining in @wiglet1981.bsky.social @crookedfootball.bsky.social Was one of my best days in Bristol after 10 years here 😁

Beautiful day today here in Bristol. 2nd day of half term for kids: 2nd day of reading week for staff/students. Apologies therefore 2 all who r spending the afternoon discussing my new book on methodology in pol-philosophy. There's a feast 4u later in heaven...plus a few sandwiches here at lunchtime

Weekly spelling test at school for youngest. Lots of homophones. Descent & dissent were the trickiest. We said Des is poor (has 1 cent) and Ents diss Saruman (we're reading LOTR together). All of which explains why we then forgot teeth brushing 😭 Knead two except I can't get everything write.

Tempting to look at world politics recently and think the US is taking a step back from leadership of 'the free world'. Maybe in the future we'll say it actually switched sides? Seems a happy member of the 'might makes right' club lately. European 'soft power', rather sadly, has never looked softer.

Earlier this week in Bristol I saw a Tesla with a large 'Elon sucks' sticker on the bumper. Because this is Bristol I really couldn't tell you whether it was the work of the driver or a passing activist. @jowolff.bsky.social @rebeccabuxton.bsky.social

Feel like talking methods/methodology in pol-theory/philosophy this Tue (18/02) in Bristol? If so, there's a workshop on a book of mine on this topic, so email me if keen. Can promise food+drink+responses from @rebeccabuxton.bsky.social + others, and a short intro from me involving Lego bricks...

Excited to be giving a Royal Institute of Philosophy lecture at York in March. I'll be speaking on some (slightly self-destructive) thoughts I've been having about "women in philosophy" initiatives. www.york.ac.uk/news-and-eve...

Political theory/philosophy job! Here is the third postdoc (36 months) on our Gerda Henkel Foundation project on anti-oligarchy. This one will be based at TU München, and supervised by my co-PI Manon Westphal. www.hfp.tum.de/hfp/aktuelle...

I'm off to Munich on Monday for a workshop on Citizenship and Global Inequality (organised by @deeesharp.bsky.social) where I'll be saying something (I hope) about hermits and permissible forms of withdrawal from the state. www.cas.lmu.de/en/events/ev...

Time perhaps for a reminder to think about joining our wonderful group on 'Methods of Normative Political Theory', your go-to chat/workshop/conference space 4 all things methodological: ecpr.eu/Group/method... Do share & encourage others to join! We're at 288 members now, but would love to hit 300.

Watched last episode (S1) of SquidGame yesterday. One of the final scenes, involving sparse dialogue btw 2 tired men in a dark tower, feels like yet another moving extreme-inequality=path-2-nihilism in film/lit. See also AmericanPsycho+FightClub + then read @ingridrobeyns.bsky.social 4 the way fwd

Have spent much of my morning trying to find a 'fair' way of ranking abstracts/papers (when reviewed by other people). Needless to say I failed. It's got me thinking again about the @britishacademy.bsky.social recent experiment with using random allocations above a certain quality threshold. Advice?

Last chance today to sign up to a conference whereby you get to hang out with a marvellous group of theorists next to a beach in Greece: ecpr.eu/Events/Event Chairs: @edmundhandby.bsky.social & Glorianne Wilkins @ecpr.bsky.social

Only 6 days left to submit your abstract for the ECPR GC in Thessaloniki, 26-29 Aug 2025! Check out our Section's panels at ecpr.eu/Events/Event... and submit by 6 January! Chairs: Esma Baycan Herzog @jonathanfloyd.bsky.social @edmundhandby.bsky.social & Glorianne Wilkins @ecpr.bsky.social

Five authors of whom it is true that you've read five of their books, but to make it harder, how about picking just one letter? In my case: Rawls (John), Roy (Arundhati), Raz (Joseph), Rowling (JK), Roth (Philip).

In case you didn't know, the best group of political theorists you could possibly be a part of is the ECPR's Standing Group on 'Methods of Normative Political Theory' (@ecpr-nptmethods.bsky.social). Their latest quarterly newsletter is now out here: nptmethods.wordpress.com/2024/12/17/n... Pls share

1 of my daughter's HW tasks this term was 2 build a Lego Benin Bronze. This got me thinking. What if all contentious artefacts around the world were recreated in Lego? Imagine eg an exhibition on the L-Elgin Marbles? Surely a profitable solution to reparative stand-offs @danieljamesbutt.bsky.social?

Public Political Philosophy via Phacts, Phictions & Philennials (& Poland): journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.... Meant to share this a while back, but then the whole academic SM landscape went through a 5th season (if you know, you know). Admittedly sketchy, but shows my current direction of travel.

I possibly spend 2 much time thinking/talking about the place of 'behaviour' in pol-philosophy (journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10....), but on this issue I need some help. Every fortnight I gather colleagues to my office for 60+mins of theory-chat and on each occasion we enjoy some home-baking...

I've been asked 2day by Cambridge Uni Press whether I'd like to sign a deal for my books 2 be used in generative AI licensing agreements. The offer is a royalty % of any deal. Am very wary of my work being used this way for various reasons. Any advice? Feel free to re-post...

A flurry of emails landed in my inbox today about mandatory training, marking, meetings, line management, and various changes to auditing something or other. At just the same time The Eye of Sauron appeared to me in Borghese Park.
