The journey of Senator Van Hollen to El Salvador reminds me very much of the days of the Roman republic when a Senator could travel to a different country and challenge the ruler by drawing a line on the ground, daring him to step across it. I suspect that the dictator of El Salvador will comply.

In a way, you wish that Trump's cabinet etc hadn't worked so hard to keep him from doing stupid things, because then maybe we wouldn't have gotten Trump II.

I think it's useless and irrelevant to speculate about why Trump does stuff. It doesn't really matter. The important thing is to oppose him and to work to change our politics so we offer people who long for change a better option.

Arguing with an old friend about the current political situation and how it can never be fixed because of Fox news etc. Over and over again in American history activism has led to real change, in the face of seemingly impossible obstacles. E.g., unions, civil rights, ending the Vietnam war.

I'm reading George Lakey's book "How we win" and I'm becoming aware of how protests like the one we had last weekend, as unifying and encouraging as it was, aren't the answer.

I was disappointed in the ending of #WhiteLotus. The whole series seemed to be about transformation, and these people ended up exactly where they started. I guess that's the point; a week in a spa doesn't change you, even if you want it to. Shout out for the Star Wars reference, though.

So you know the kids in the class in Ferris Bueller's Day Off? The ones who weren't listening in the lecture about the Smoot-Hawley Tariffs? We elected one of them President.

Once again, switching to a deposit model for tires would eliminate this problem. 1. Charge say $5 extra when the tire is sold. Deposit amount is molded into the tire. 2. When the tire is returned for disposal, you get the $5 back. No more tire dumping. share.inquirer.com/YmC54g

Here is a look at how measles β€” one of the world’s most infectious viruses β€” takes over the body.

You know, it would be a lot scarier if Trump was younger.

I feel like this week was a turning point, starting with Booker's speech. It felt performative but it came at the right time. I think it will mark the beginning of the real opposition to Donald Trump. It helps that it happened just before Trump made the biggest mistake of any American President.

We say things like, "if they can lock immigrants up for their politics, they can lock up citizens," strangely unaware of American history, in which citizens have definitely been locked up, driven to suicide, even deported, for their political beliefs. It can happen here; it has.
