Lots of good sense in this column by @alicettimes.bsky.social. www.thetimes.com/article/b883...

I’ve written a post over on LinkedIn about the increasing number of older people in prison and how education provision needs to adapt, based on my recent talk for @ilcuk.bsky.social. www.linkedin.com/pulse/meetin...

Love this by one of our former learners, discussing the power of education and of reading specifically. Hearing from people who've studied with PET's support always makes me so impressed by what they've achieved and so proud of the work we do. prisonerseducation.org.uk/story/omars-...

Good to see @feweek.bsky.social looking at apprenticeships in prison. Disappointing but not surprising that it's taking time for them to get going. Enabling people to do an apprenticeship in overcrowded and understaffed prisons will have been a real challenge. But worth persevering.

Lengthy interview with Lord Timpson in The Times today, but nothing much new in it. Feels like everything’s really on hold now, until @davidgauke.bsky.social’s review reports. www.thetimes.com/uk/crime/art...

This is good blog by @hmiprisonsnews.bsky.social on what makes Standford Hill a good prison. Good to see education judged 'good' overall and the positive partnership with East Kent College highlighted. hmiprisons.justiceinspectorates.gov.uk/news/the-pow...

Come and run with the @prisonersed.bsky.social team! It’s a fun day out and we come and cheer you on.

To add to the many, many reviews currently going on, there is now a review of the handling of prison capacity. WMS here: questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-stat... Terms of reference here: www.gov.uk/government/p... Dame Anne Owers is leading it.

Thanks very much to the @ilcuk.bsky.social for inviting me to speak at this event on education and training for older prisoners. It’s a real challenge for prisons to provide the right offer for this group.

This is a really bleak report from @hmiprisonsnews.bsky.social on women's experiences of prison, but there are also some areas, including education, where improvements in provision would clearly help women in prison to cope. hmiprisons.justiceinspectorates.gov.uk/hmipris_repo...

I've finally got round to subscribing to @jim.londoncentric.media's @londoncentric.media. Great to be supporting the sort of nerdy but accessible journalism about London that I really like. www.londoncentric.media

Everyone likes a top 10, so here's our most popular courses from 2024. New entries include canine science and fire safety, while perennial favourites include health and safety courses, creative writing, and drug and alcohol counselling. prisonerseducation.org.uk/2025/01/2024...

This a good article by Peter Stanford of @longfordtrust.bsky.social on WayOutTV, the prison tv channel.

Typically bleak interview with Charlie Taylor in @thehousemag.bsky.social on the state of prisons, including this snippet on education. But also more praise for Oakwood and some suggestions on the benefits of more governor autonomy alongside more training. www.politicshome.com/thehouse/art...

Well, this is depressing. www.thetimes.com/uk/law/artic...

This blog by my @prisonersed.bsky.social colleague Cassie Edmiston is well worth a read. It's about supporting good mental health for fundraisers, given the specific pressures they face, but there's lots in it for everyone in the charity sector. www.limegreenconsulting.co.uk/blog/were-no...

It's the #InternationalDayofEducation, so what better time to nominate us for a Movement for Good award? The more nominations PET receives, the greater the chance we have of winning £1,000 to help people in prison gain qualifications.

An update by Lord Timpson on his first few months as prisons ministers and the importance of focusing on employment after release. Good to see the focus on skills and a mention of the need to improve access to education and training. newfuturesnetwork.gov.uk/reflections-...

There's so much potential in problem-solving approaches, so it's good to see +ve coverage of problem-solving courts. This inspiring piece on Family Drug and Alcohol Courts: www.thetimes.com/uk/society/a... And this on problem-solving courts in criminal justice: www.thetimes.com/uk/law/artic...

I am a former incarcerated firefighter. I served in a California fire camp from 2009 to 2012. Misinformation is afire on the internet, so here are facts about the prison firefighter program, all in one place. A thread.

Good to see HMPPS promoting prison teaching, with four people's experiences: - www.theguardian.com/do-something... - www.theguardian.com/do-something... - www.theguardian.com/do-something... - www.theguardian.com/do-something... Find out more at prisonandprobationjobs.gov.uk/roles-at-hmp...

This is a really good, incredibly bleak, article by @gabyhinsliff.bsky.social. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Good to see links being developed between employers, prisons and probation, but they also need to make sure that education and training in prison is connected to employers so people in prison gets the skills and qualifications that employers actually want and need. www.gov.uk/government/n...

Interesting article in @thetimes.com about HMP Oakwood and the successes they’ve had through giving people in prison opportunities and responsibilities. www.thetimes.com/uk/politics/...

Thank you to everyone who supported us via the @biggive.bsky.social! It's great to head into the Christmas season having hit our target, knowing that will help us to support more people in prison during 2025.

This is an incredible, inspiring essay by Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, describing the power of reading and its importance when she was imprisoned in Iran.

We’re 81% of the way there with 24 hours to go! Can you help us get to our target? donate.biggive.org/campaign/a05...

It’s not too late to donate to @prisonersed.bsky.social via the @biggive.bsky.social and your donation will be doubled! If you can, please support us and the work that we do to improve access to education for people in prison. donate.biggive.org/campaign/a05...

Here's what @ofstednews.bsky.social's Annual Report 2023/24, published today, has to say on prison education ⬇️ Read the full report here: https://buff.ly/41hzdW7

New @ofstednews.bsky.social Annual Report notes that prison education can have a "transformative effect" but also that "prison education remains weak, almost without exception". www.gov.uk/government/p...

It's time for the Big Give! We have already raised an incredible £17k thanks to the generosity of 31 amazing donors. If you can, please help us reach our target, enabling us to provide distance learning courses to people in prison.

Can see why helping people leaving prison get a job ticks a lot of boxes for the government, and employment advisory boards and employment hubs may help. But also need to improve access to education and training and the quality of provision. www.thetimes.com/uk/politics/...

Charity CEOs are very much mid-table in this, with 51% of the public trusting us to generally tell the truth. Worth thinking about when we’re deciding who’s best placed to promote the causes and issues we care about.

Looking forward to today’s event on collaboration between civil society and the civil service. Good that @probonoecon.bsky.social are following up on their event with Keir Starmer before the election.

This is yet another grim reminder about the failures of custody for children. Expensive, unsafe, and doing little or nothing to promote rehabilitation. hmiprisons.justiceinspectorates.gov.uk/hmipris_repo...
