Happy #FathersDay to those who celebrate. Sea spiders are great dads - in most species the males carry the developing eggs and the larvae that hatch from them. (which makes me very proud to have one named after me - www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=...)

Want to join our deep-sea ecology team at @icmcsic.bsky.social? We seek a PhD student to study macroecology and effects of climate change in abyssal seascapes. With focus on sea cucumber communities. Please disseminate, and if interested please contact us www.icm.csic.es/en/calls/phd...

Aboard RV Callista this week on the "Shallow-water survey techniques" fieldcourse for our Biology & Marine Biology students. They're exploring what lives where, and why, on the seabed of Southampton Water. 🌊🔬🪱🦐🦀🐚

I enjoyed talking with Michelle Guraieb for @deepstewardship.bsky.social's Think Deep! podcast, available from today... ...about "ocean governance": what it is, why we need it, how it began, its challenges, and how science plays a vital role 👇🎧 www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_p3... #WorldOceanDay 🌊🌏🧪

#OnThisDay in the #ocean 🌊 - a deep double today: 6 June 1930: William Beebe & Otis Barton became the first people to dive into the deep sea (>200 m), reaching 435 m in their bathysphere. 6 June 2012: Herbert Nitsch set a new record for "no limits" breath-hold diving, reaching 253 m deep. 🧵👇

A phenomenal effort, and vital resource for future marine ecology research, by @drcraigmc.bsky.social and colleagues 👇

For many marine species, all we have is a name. Now, thanks to a huge effort led by @drcraigmc.bsky.social, for 85,000 species we have body size as well. Version 1 of the MOBS database is published today: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... Enjoy! 🌐🧪

Fwiw the paper from our publicly funded project examining long-term impacts of deep-sea nodule mining is in this week's print edition of Nature & now available as open access: doi.org/10.1038/s415...

The latest @OceanCensus expedition has begun! In partnership with JAMSTEC, with support from #TheNipponFoundation, the team is searching for new species in Japan’s deep ocean, using the legendary Shinkai 6500 submersible. Follow the journey #Shinkai6500. Learn more: oceancensus.org/expeditions/...

Did you catch the trailer for Think Deep! yet? This isn’t just a podcast. It’s a journey into one of the most important, least understood ecosystems on Earth the #DeepOcean. Episode 1 drops this World Ocean Day – 8 June. Watch the trailer: buff.ly/UXgiM23

#OnThisDay in #ocean #science 🌊🧪 4 June 1967: launch of the Deep Quest HOV (Human-Occupied Vehicle) built by Lockheed, which could reach ~2500 m deep (cf. Alvin's ~1800 m rating at that time). 🧵👇

#OnThisDay in #ocean #science 🌊🧪 2 June 1927: German research ship Meteor returned from a two-year mission criss-crossing the south Atlantic... ...which included using a new-fangled echosounder to make ~67000 depth measurements that revealed the full extent of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. 🧵👇

This evening on holiday it's only my wife's second-favourite film (after Aliens) on BBC iPlayer... ...bring on her countryman Alistair MacLean's cracking story (with Ron Goodwin's superlative cinematic score) 😉:
