I do refugee and asylum policy at the Refugee Council, so most likely a lot of the posts will be about that.

New Home Office stats show that the number of cases waiting for an initial asylum decision fell from 97,170 (133,409 people) at the end of Sep 2024 to 90,686 (124,802) at the end of December. Still slightly higher than at the end of June (85,839 and 118,882), but going in the right direction.

The quarterly immigration stats are out at 9.30am, covering up to the end of 2024. They'll give us a bit more of an understanding on how things have gone in the first few months of the new Government. Will be particularly interesting to see the progress on getting the asylum system functioning again

18 - Liverpool have now scored 2+ goals in 18 consecutive games at Anfield in all competitions – the longest run of home games with more than one goal scored in succession by an English top-flight club since Sunderland from February-December 1935 (19). Powerhouse.

Good to see the parliamentary scrutiny of the change to the citizenship guidance continue with the Home Affairs Select Committee now writing to the Home Office about it committees.parliament.uk/publications...

First day back after the half-term recess and very welcome to hear @stellacreasy.bsky.social continuing to raise concerns in @houseofcommons.parliament.uk about the ban on refugees getting citizenship if they arrived irregularly

148 signatories call for the government to reconsider it's refugee citizenship ban, including Unison, the Conference of Liberal Rabbis, Islamic Relief UK, the Methodist Conference, the Baptist Union and several lord bishops www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f...

The Home Office have published the equality impact assessment for the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill (would have been nice to have had prior to 2nd reading, but at least there is one...) www.gov.uk/government/p...

A thread well worth a read for anyone trying to understand the complexities of the Gaza family case.

Here’s the bill committee membership for the Border Security Bill. A lot of 2024 intake MPs.

NEW Children exempt from Home Office rules denying citizenship to small boat refugees... if they had no choice on crossing the Channel inews.co.uk/news/politic...

Former Labour Home Secretary David Blunkett has a Private Notice Question (the Lords equivalent of a private question) on the changes to citizenship in the @houseoflords.parliament.uk. Will start at around 3.30pm whatson.parliament.uk/event/cal50774

I was glad to have spotted this poll via @sundersays.bsky.social and included in my post because seriously wth is Labour even doing here

The UK is set to deny citizenship to certain refugees simply for having been forced to take dangerous journeys to reach safety. ❗This policy will prevent at least 71,000 refugees from obtaining British citizenship, ECRE member @refugeecouncil.bsky.social estimates. www.bbc.com/news/article...

The Home Office have announced that the non-statutory inquiry into conditions at Manston between June and November 2022 will begin next month questions-statements.parliament.uk/written-stat...

Refugee Convention Art 34 Naturalization The Contracting States shall as far as possible facilitate the assimilation & naturalization of refugees. They shall in particular make every effort to expedite naturalization proceedings & to reduce as far as possible the charges & costs of such proceedings.

I missed it at the time, but during Monday's 2nd reading debate on the Border Security Bill Yvette Cooper said: "The Gov have strengthened the powers to ensure that small boat arrivals cannot get citizenship by strengthening the rules." No detail was offered. Clear now what she was referring to.

The change to the citizenship guidance had immediate effect - anyone who applies for citizenship as of 10 Feb is impacted. That includes people who have had refugee status for several years, as well as those who are waiting for a decision on their asylum claim. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

This should be changed asap. If we give someone refugee status, it can't be right to then refuse them route to become a British Citizen. To say they can have a home in our country, but never a place in our society and be forever second class. freemovement.org.uk/good-charact...

Here's the call for evidence for the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill bill committee. The committee is expected to meet on 27 February and take oral evidence that day. If just 1 day of evidence, that would probably leave 6 for line-by-line scrutiny. www.parliament.uk/business/new...

Excellent thread from @colinyeo.bsky.social on the new guidance that would seem to ban most refugees from ever acquiring British citizenship. Governments cannot continue to talk about wanting to encourage integration (or even require it) while also putting in place indefensible barriers.

This isn't actually what the Home Office figures show as the vast majority of those 19,000 people left voluntarily.

1. Quick 🧵 on the change to policy that, on the face of it, bans refugees from ever acquiring British citizenship. @sonial77.bsky.social has published a short article on Free Movement: freemovement.org.uk/good-charact... And I've done a follow up on my Substack: open.substack.com/pub/wewanted...

This is a very, very bad change. If there is no carve out for refugees it’s also very clearly in breach of the Refugee Convention. Art 31 requires no penalisation for illegal entry and Art 34 requires facilitation of naturalisation.

Labour government sustains a majority of 239 on the immigration and asylum bill, against the Conservative opposition amendment 115 for the Conservative amendment 354 against the amendment for the government

Nice that the Home Office can publish ad hoc stats on returns (even though the quarterly stats are only a couple of weeks ago) but seemingly straight forward FOIs can take an age to get responses to.

⚡ The Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill has its Second Reading in the @houseofcommons.parliament.uk today. Read our detailed briefing 👇 ilpa.org.uk/wp-content/u...

There’s an urgent question and a statement in the Commons today, so second reading of the Border Security bill will likely start between 5pm and 5.30pm.

Luke's segments work always fascinating. Lab's 16 point drop among "loyal nationals" is attracting attention - but the party is also down 9 points since GE (and 27 points since 2019) among progressive activists - their core group, by 12 among "disengaged battlers & by 10 among "civic pragmatists"

More than 6,000 Syrian asylum seekers and refugees living in Britain are stuck in limbo because of an ongoing "pause" on claims Two months after the fall of Assad's regime, the Home Office has not made the decisions needed to restart processing www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f...

Important coverage of the ongoing pause in the processing of Syrian asylum claims, as well as settlement applications, by @lizziedearden.bsky.social. People shouldn’t just be left in limbo because of an indefinite pause www.theguardian.com/world/2025/f...

Programme motion for the Border Security Bill says the committee stage will conclude by 20 March. Given the half-term recess that’s maybe 5 days of line-by-line scrutiny

We argue that the proposed new offences will imprison more people trying to seek safety and a better life in the UK This is already happening - over 550 people have been imprisoned 2022-24 for crossing the Channel. @captainsupportuk.bsky.social works in solidarity with them.

@labourtogether.bsky.social research last year, found that British people are enthusiastic about migrants gaining UK citizenship. Our "Migration in the Age of Insecurity" report showed people see migrants as contributing more if they become citizens. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
