Covering #MNUFC for the Minnesota Star Tribune (but contractually obligated to not indicate nor imply that I'm an employee, or staff member, at same). Can't shut up about Minnesota sports, but still always Minnesota nice. Also still a crackpot.

Totally forgot that Hervé Renard is still Saudi Arabia's manager, don't know how the USMNT can compete with that level of swag

Looking at the Gold Cup so far, feels almost certain we'll see Canada (against, most likely, Guatemala) as one of the quarterfinals at US Bank Stadium. Also feels certain that Mexico would play in Glendale, so whether the USA is in the other quarterfinal in Mpls depends on whether they play Mexico

My man

TANI OLUWASEYI GOLAZO FOR CANADA Left-footed, tight angle, defender on top of him, and he roofs it under the crossbar. That's a real good one for the #MNUFC striker.

It's not every player that can get punched in the head by the goalkeeper in the middle of the penalty area and NOT get awarded a penalty kick, but Tani Oluwaseyi has just pulled it off for Canada.

Lotta #MNUFC flavor in tonight's Gold Cup nightcap. Dayne St. Clair and Tani Oluwaseyi both in the lineup for Canada, Joseph Rosales and (former Loon) Kervin Arriaga in the lineup for Honduras.

I'm not sure what the bigger upset is: that the Aurora gave up a goal, or that they only got a draw. It's just the fourth draw in Aurora regular-season history.

Old friend Eddie Rosario is on the market after getting released by the Brewers yesterday. He's 33 and I don't think he can play third base, but I still think it's time for the Twins to bring him back.

I have thought a lot about how to fix the #USMNT and I have decided that, if they want to compete with the world's best, they should simply rudely overrun them like they are currently doing to Trinidad and Tobago

More from last night's 4-2 loss for #MNUFC, for @stribsports.startribune.com : * They gave up four, but one of the goals in particular really seemed to bother the Loons * Minnesota is high on Wessel Speel, but it was a rough night

Twins doing the greatest Father's Day service of all: giving all the Minnesota dads a chance to text their friends "burn it all down, this team's done"

#MNUFC manager Eric Ramsay started his postgame press conference with a statement. "I just wanted to start by publicly saying, on behalf of our staff and the team, how much we feel what's happened today. And it wouldn’t be right for me to stand up here and not acknowledge that here." 1/2

#MNUFC game story for @stribsports.startribune.com: It's a night to forget for both goalkeepers, as the Loons lose 4-2 at home against San Diego.

No excuses for #MNUFC. They played against a not-full-strength team at home and lost, again, even though they've been so focused on making sure that they could still compete in June this year.

Milan Iloski scores a breakaway in stoppage time as #MNUFC pushes forward, and that'll about do it for this one. San Diego 4, Minnesota 2. That's two games at home against the West top two for MIN, in which the visitors were missing key players... and two multi-goal losses.

Now Anders Dreyer turns provider, a perfect cross for Milian Iloski, and San Diego leads #MNUFC 3-2 at Allianz Field. Loons June swoon returns anew, or something like that?

Speel went the right way, Andres Dreyer took a weak penalty... and it sneaks under Speel and into the side netting. #MNUFC's rookie keeper is going to need therapy after this game. It's 2-2 here at Allianz Field.

It's a penalty out of nothing, San Diego's awarded a penalty because Markanich had his hands up by his head. That one feels just unlucky, rather than a mistake. #MNUFC

It's time for VAR, as Anthony Markanich - whose hands were up by his face - got hit in the hand with an attempted cross. I'd tell you what's going to happen but I have no idea. #MNUFC

HALFTIME: #MNUFC 2, San Diego 1. This was supposed to be a clash of styles, but mostly it's just been a clash of WTFs...

It's time for... more terrible goalkeeping! CJ Dos Santos can't hold an (honestly fairly straightforward) Joaquin Pereyra shot, it rebounds right to Kelvin Yeboah, and Yeboah taps home the rebound to give #MNUFC another lead. I assume Wessel Speel is about to go full Ndjock, to top that one.

San Diego's answer to the packed-in #MNUFC defense is to make some passes, spread them out, then try to hit a long ball over the top to a fullback that's making a run in behind. This is how the LA Galaxy destroyed the Loons last year (mostly Miki Yamane), so maybe not a bad idea.

Holy crap Anders Dreyer just caught Wessel Speel off his line and scored from the halfway line! Now 1-1 between San Diego and #MNUFC, and both keepers are looking for a hole to crawl into and hide.

San Diego FC wants to keep the ball along the ground and is willing to make passes in their own penalty area. Probably not like that. Christopher McVey passes back to keeper CJ Santos, the pass hops over his foot, and rolls into the net. Disastrous own goal, and #MNUFC leads 1-0.

First chance for San Diego turned out to be offside anyway, but #MNUFC keeper Wessel Speel stood up well. Nobody used these words, but the sense I got from the team about Speel tonight was along the lines of "He's Dutch, he's too stubborn to be nervous."

#MNUFC honored USWNT captain Lindsey Heaps before the game, as she's in town for the game (along with the rest of husband Tyler Heaps's family). She was gracious, and did not whip out a SDFC shirt like a pro wrestling villian. I'm honestly a little disappointed.

This one has a different feel than the June games last year did for Minnesota United. Owen Gene's at least started a game before, and Wessel Speel has started two first-team games already this year. No excuse for #MNUFC this time around.

#MNUFC team news: Wessel Speel makes his MLS debut tonight in goal. No Robin Lod in the starting lineup, with Bongokuhle Hlongwane listed out on the right wing; we'll see what kind of actual tactical look the Loons have.

As expected, #MNUFC has signed second-team keeper Wessel Speel to a short-term agreement for tonight's match against San Diego FC. Speel, 23, was an All-American at Duke last year, and has won two USOC games this year for the Loons. He couldn't play in MLS until they opened an int'l spot.

Tyler Heaps of San Diego is the youngest sporting director in MLS. He’s also the only one who used to deliver the @startribune.com to earn money for soccer shoes. Heaps may be in other colors these days, but he’s still #oneofus - and he has San Diego’s Right To Dream project off and running:
