Please join us March 19th for our next webinar, "Doing Research on Okinawa," featuring Lynette Teruya (University of Hawai'i-Manoa), Hana Omine (Okinawa Prefectural Library), Jacqueline Toma (Okinawa Genealogical Society of HI), and Cameron Vanderscoff (Okinawa Memories Initiative).

There is a documentary film about Mr. Gushiken, a volunteer who collects human remains. English subtitled screenings will be available in the future. This is a documentary film that people outside of Japan should definitely see. efcjp.info/2021/08/23/o...

70 years ago today, US troops seized farmers' land on Iejima, Okinawa, to build a base to drop dummy nuclear weapons. It triggered one of the longest-running civil rights movements in the world. (And I write about it in my new book to be published next year...) apjjf.org/jon-mitchell...

A Japanese translation of my most recent book, *Nuclear Bodies: the Global Hibakusha* (Yale 2022) is being released this week from Nagoya University Press. #NukeSky #EnvHIst #HistSTM #nuclear #Hiroshima Details at the link: www.unp.or.jp/ISBN/ISBN978...

I am reading about white foreigners getting involved with surfing in Hawaiʻi in the late 1800s/early 1900s and an ENRAGED that after Native Hawaiians shared their sport with white newcomer Alexander Hume Ford, he paid back their generosity by founding the WHITES ONLY Outrigger Canoe Club in 1908.

29 years ago today, On Feb. 27, 1996, my story about US complicity in Chun Doo Hwan's massacre in Gwangju was published to almost zero attention from the US press. But it had an enormous impact in Korea, where it's still cited for revealing the true nature of US policy. timshorrock.com/documents/

The Okinawan peace movement does not only oppose US bases; it opposes all forms of militarism. This video from yesterday shows a small group of protesters blocking the deployment of Japanese troops to Miyako Island. youtu.be/y0YCagEf8Dc?...

On 24 Feb, a US sailor was arrested for exposing himself in a shop in Ginowan City. I investigated a similar case in 2017 where Japanese police waived right to prosecute; although the sailor was then court-martialled / found guilty, he did not register as sex offender. www.qab.co.jp/news/2025022...

Writing for @inkstickmedia.com, I spoke with author @mikealbertus.bsky.social about his new book on how control of land dictates every aspect of our lives and the ways in which our relationship with land could change under the Trump administration: inkstickmedia.com/the-power-of...

"Every day, the water in Okinawa is becoming more and more contaminated. I don't know where to run to." - Uema Yoko. www.guernicamag.com/clean-water/

(Periodic repost to boost awareness) Please watch our documentary, "Nuchi nu Miji – Okinawa’s Water of Life", about how US Air Force contaminated drinking water for 450,000 Okinawans with PFAS Forever Chemicals. We made the film in 2022 but military still refuses clean-up. youtu.be/fiBVRAGgtsE?...

“If you're not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing.” A classic quote from Malcolm X, who was assassinated 60 years ago today.

Okinawa: 2025 is not only 80th anniversary of WW2's end but also 70th anniversary of US military land seizures in Iejima, triggering one of the most persistent civil disobedience movements on earth. 「沖縄戦から10年後の1955年3月 300人のアメリカ兵が島の北西部 真謝区の土地を強制的に摂取 住民は非暴力を掲げてアメリカ軍に抵抗しました」 youtu.be/es7y5lgT_I8?...

Great report about Sakima Art Museum and the importance of art in relaying to the post-war generation the slaughter of the Battle of Okinawa. If you visit Ginowan, please drop by. The Marukis' painting is heartbreaking, pulls no punches. 戦世から80年 アートで平和伝える 佐喜眞美術館の30年(沖縄テレビ) youtu.be/F9sa25OTH1k?...

Okinawa: Yesterday, US historian Peter Kuznick visited the site of the new base the Japanese government is building for the US Marines atop the pristine waters of Oura Bay. He called the project "a crime against nature." Respect. www.otv.co.jp/okitive/news...

Scientists in Okinawa confirm (again) that Marine Corps base is responsible for polluting nearby communities, including a primary school and sacred springs, with toxic PFAS... but very unlikely PM Ishiba will mention it when he meets Trump tomorrow. www.okinawatimes.co.jp/articles/-/1...

MJHA is thrilled to announce the three finalists for the 2025 Modern Japan History Association Book Prize! Congratulations to Matthew Augustine, Ryo Morimoto, and Jun Uchida for their excellent work! @ucpress.bsky.social

US military aircraft have a nasty habit of dropping chunks of fuselage, fuel tanks, and windows onto Okinawa; in the latest case, a Marine Corps MV22 Osprey dropped 450kg cargo off the coast of Iejima, birthplace of islands' civil disobedience movement. www.okinawatimes.co.jp/articles/-/1...

Fuel for a long night of editing: vegan tonkotsu ramen from the ever delicious T’s Restaurant in Jiyugaoka, Tokyo. Lovely.

The annual data is in for US military crime in Okinawa. 2024 was the highest for 20 years with 80 personnel arrested; as for violent crimes, 8 incidents made it the worst year since 1992. US/Japan talk about lessening islands' military burden but things will likely worsen under Hegseth's watch.

Super stoked to see the work of Okinawan artist, Yuken Teruya, on the cover of the British Museum magazine. Great that one of the most talented living artists in Japan/the world plus Okinawa peace movement receive the recognition they so rightly deserve. Kudos! www.okinawatimes.co.jp/articles/-/1...

"Rebeccaism deserves a more significant place in British radical history – partly because of, not despite, its messier and more militant dimensions." Me for @historytoday.com www.historytoday.com/archive/hist...

In breaking news from Okinawa, (yet) another US marine is charged with sexual assault and injury; last month, a US airman was imprisoned for abducting and raping a minor. (Many mainlanders express sympathy for Okinawans - but few volunteer to host the bases in their own communities…)

明けましておめでとうございます! Happy 2025 to everyone! May your year be filled with peace, love and piping hot bowls of (vegetarian) ozōni!

Wishing all of our friends a very happy holiday season full of peace, love & happiness! Gracias Ignocio Gomez for this wonderful piece of art. #MerryChristmas #HappyChanukah

Only three of the six main Tokyo-based newspapers bothered to report about last weekend's mass demonstration in Okinawa against US military sexual assaults. Ignorance is violence.

2,500 people attended today's demonstration in Okinawa City against US military sexual violence - with accompanying protests in Nago, Miyako, and Ishigaki. www.okinawatimes.co.jp/articles/-/1...

This weekend is the anniversary of the Koza Riot, Okinawa's largest anti-military uprising. In 2011, I went back with a military police officer and asked if the riot was justified. "Absolutely," he said, "My only question is what took Okinawans so long to rebel." www.japantimes.co.jp/community/20...

Good morning. We are open. 📖☕️

On 22 December, Okinawans will stage a mass demonstration (kenmin taikai) to protest US military sexual violence. The demo will be held in Okinawa Shimin Kaikan and organisers are asking attendees to bring/wear mimosa-yellow-coloured items/clothes to signal solidarity. (It will also be livestreamed)
