This is not M&S Just food This is ... food

_Technically_ my picture was on the BBC news website today. Admittedly a tiny sliver of forehead behind my colleague's ridiculous hat, but it still counts www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Discussing my ample bra size on This Morning, earlier today.

Genuinely couldn't believe this figure until I saw the Financial Times confirm it using Meta's own financial reporting data For THIS $100 billion is genuinely the kind of money you could "do the impossible" with. Crack nuclear fusion. HIV vaccine. Universal flu vaccine And they spent it on this

Retch PLC displaying exemplary behaviour as per usual

We were on the Today Programme this morning! Here's a blog post from Ben about why OpenSAFELY is in the news today, and how a total of £17 million of new funding from Wellcome is going to be a game-changer: www.bennett.ox.ac.uk/blog/2025/02...

Again, raw feeding is dumb, puts your pets and your family at unnecessary risk of getting ill

DIY gigs in breweries FTW. Regal Cheer are dope

My local paper (the paper formerly known as the Bristol evening post) ran a story recently (in true Retch clickbait guff fashion) about the rising number of measles cases and the comments on fb were like 100% antivaxxers. Depressing enough, but what surprised me was most of them were yanks

I seem to have a spectacular ability to write unit tests that exhibit spooky behaviour. Not sure if me, this particular project's _unique_ database configuration, or just pytest's magic being a bit too magical

The modern phenomenon of the Haunted Cereal Bowl has bothered me for years

HOT RESEARCH NEWS! Motonormativity ("car brain") is a bias that stops people making rational judgements about driving en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motonor... Our new study shows where this bias comes from AND how it makes people think they're odd for supporting changes to the transport system 🧵

My love for you is like a peregrine falcon. One more valentine from a past year.

Utterly heartbreaking

Quick TIL: if you have uv installed and you want to try out ANY Python package in an ipython REPL, you can do so just by running uvx --with llm --with sqlite-utils ipython Pass as many --with package options as you like I wrapped it in a shell script, "itry llm" til.simonwillison.net/python/itry

“This is bad, full stop. It creates a class of person who are forever excluded from civic life no matter how long they live here. It’s also a clear breach of the refugee convention.” Damn straigt, @colinyeo.bsky.social www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

In major news(drumroll🎉) for fans, friends and family of #TheGlobalJigsaw we have a pilot episode up that is fully visualised youtu.be/RJT1ycrut8c?... - please have a look at @ikrassi.bsky.social and Vitaly Shevchenko, talking about Russia's language of war. Your thoughts would be much appreciated 🙏

Slimbridge is great, these guys are otterly adorable

Simple way to reasonably run a background process in a docker container. Saves setting up s6 or similar. Uses the run-one-constantly tool from the run-one package to keep it running, and the default docker init process to propagate signals to all child processes. gist.github.com/bloodearnest...

My handsome flappy boy

Not sure if banter or dark timeline

Anyone know what this call means?

None of this remotely matters in the scale of things but I am just confused as to why the Spotify homepage now pushes random LadBible takes on viral video formats used by BuzzFeed more than a decade ago.

The size of that

Oh man, I have so many stories about that "startup". The founder Marshall Webb spent a year harassing me because I posted a research paper on the Mirai botnet (he considered himself to be the sole authority). It later turned out his knowledge came from him personally hosting their infrastructure 1/5

I used to add little Easter egg fake thumbnails at the end of my videos. Ah man, I used to be more fun then. But making one thumbnail for the video itself is enough headache! I went back to look for them just now. The YouTube formatting of video links has changed but you get the idea

@theednawatkins.bsky.social how's it hanging, bud?

Another crank journal to have on your radar

Irritated (and irritating) window pecking continues

I see now why George W Bush called Peter Mandelson “silvertongue”. on.ft.com/3Q4hPgO

Stop motion is as time consuming as it is fun 🥹 I do think it is a great way to convey Mathematical concepts though✨
