It's World Book Day, so it behoves me remind parents that Jedi and Ben 10 are not appropriate choices of costume. If they're not going to school as tuberculosis, existential dread, or the sense of wistful longing one gets for a pastoral childhood one never had, books aren't for them.

Hello, lovely book folk. Just a quick reminder, as I don't post on here much - I'm a freelance editor with over 24 years in the industry. I specialise in SFF and Horror, and you can find my website here: www.jonolivereditor.co.uk Get in touch if you need some of that there editing.

The world is a frightening and terrible place, but all my friends are here and so are books. So, swings and roundabouts.

Half term is only a week. But in parent time that actually equates to a frickin' decade.

Half term and really putting in the parenting effort today by letting the kids play Minecraft all morning.

Get this stuck right in your ears.

It's a real shame that Cormac McCarthy died before romantasy went mainstream, as I for one would have loved to read No Country for Sexy Elves.

It are my birthday. So I shall be spending it in the traditional manner - staring at words and making them all nicerer and shit.

The Gaiman allegations are awful and the man is clearly horrible, but I do feel for all of the creatives attached to his works who have had their jobs fucked due to the cancellation of various projects.

An event on 2nd February that will be well worth attending for any writer folk. A whole bunch of interesting panels. I will be joining Amy Ewing and Rebecca Heyman for a plotting Q&A. Check it out reedsy.com/learning/eve...

Behold my witterings. Join us.

Join ussssss... I will be waffling wisely.

Last night's re-watch was Hereditary. I think I liked it more this time round, and I liked it to begin with. Steeped in grief and foreboding from the start, the last half hour is genuinely the stuff of nightmare. The headless bodies kneeling in supplication are particularly seared into my brain.

In which I promise to judge all the things (as long as they are fantasy literature related).

I quite liked it when the received wisdom on engaging with social media was not to feed the trolls or bring up Nazis to try and win an argument.

Got my Jesus orange.

Call me controversial but I think the first thing you want to do if you want to write a novel is read a lot of novels.

I think I might just be a tiny bit burnt out.

Had a difficult day today and, as if to add insult to injury, Rush comes on the radio. Why does God hate me?

It's all very well at getting better at identifying SEN kids, but if there isn't enough support for SEN kids, then what is the actual point?

Songs sung to the cat today: She’s a furry bugger/ Easy Lover Lickin’ her butt, Lickin’ her butt/ Breaking the Law Once, twice, three times a chonker/ Three Times a Lady

Last night's movie was a re-watch of Session 9 and, yup, still as scary as fuck.

Being neuro-diverse parents of neuro-diverse kids is never boring.

Looking for a new comedy thing to watch we have landed on Big Boys. Which is superb.

Last night's movie was I Saw the TV Glow. Really charming and nicely weird. Didn't quite land the ending for me, but it's a great love letter to 90s TV and a really good exploration of queer identity.

That time of year that, as a freelancer, I'm inundated with invites to Christmas parties. Inundated, I tell you...

Three natural 20s in a row in last night's D&D.

Looking at the hundreds of books in my office, thinking of all the human work, ingenuity, and creativity that went into each and every one, the hours and hours of actual work, love, care, and dedication, and very much wanting to kick AI directly in the robo-knackers.

Took the girls to see Wicked at the cinema last night. Most enjoyable.

Book two - Legacy: Awakening is in for its final editing and proofreading phase. Book three - Legacy: Shadows of War is with my awesome editor @jonolivereditor.bsky.social while he works his magic. Both slated for a 2025 release. Maybe book four too! This has been a crazy, fun ride so far.

Why is fantasy often riddled with people giving each other curt nods? Also, Curt Nods should be the name of some kind of sports star.

Almost four years a freelancer, and I finally have my own office. The tatty laptop bag is where the cat sleeps, in case you were wondering.

Off to that fancy London this evening for drinks with that there Lavie Tidhar and a crew of fabulous folk.

I have now been taking anti-depressants for ten years - fluoxetine, if you're interested - and it's made a huge difference to my life. For the better on the whole.

Thoroughly enjoyed Immaculate. Full of blood and thunder. Reminded me of Corman's Poe movies. Wish I hadn't watched the much blander First Omen beforehand, however.

So I'm largely staying off social media at the moment, for the sake of my sanity, and because I'm very busy, but just a quick duck of the head in to say be kind, read books, love each other.

Found the mug for me.

What a wonderful talent and a brilliant woman we have lost with the passing of Janey Godley. A true treasure of a human being.
